Mitchell, Joni - Stormy Weather Lyrics

Don't know why
There's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all of the time

Life is bare
Gloom and misery everywhere
Stormy weather
Just can't get my poor self together
I'm weary all the time
All the time

So weary all of the time
When you went away
The blues stepped up and met me
If he's gone to stay
That old rocking chair's going to get me
Every night I pray
That the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sunlight once more

I can't go on
Everything I had is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all of the time

Keeps rainin' all of the time

STORMY WEATHER -- Joni & Gordie (Jenkins, the arranger). Just celebrated "My favorite Joni Mitchell song you may not have heard" – AT LAST. A memorable moment a couple decades ago -- driving into work in the cold pre-dawn of a winter day -- I had that 'gotta-pull-the-car-over' moment, and turned up the AM radio volume: A great female singer -- I couldn't immediately identify -- in the company of a huge (70 piece?) orchestra was re-introducing me to AT LAST.

Just as an aside, the stunning arrangement combines a deceptively simple complexity with repeated notes -- the sort of 'chink-chink-chink' piano accompaniment we heard in those early, mostly-forgotten, 50's pop tunes that tried so hard to compete on early rock 'n' roll radio.

I remember being thrilled when the announcer came on to announce, after-the-fact: “That was Joni Mitchell.”

To this day that CD of Joni's remains one of my 'desert island' albums. From memory, I think the principal arranger was Vince Mendoza – who, rather than reinvent the wheel, wisely borrowed verbatim – copied wholesale, for Joni's STORMY WEATHER, the charts by Gordon Jenkins for Sinatra: the opening 'gathering-storm' orchestral flourishes still give me goosebumps. Guess they did for Joni too!

Any track from that album would be fitting to listen to now – including the one Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio played overnight, “Don't Go To Strangers.” But so good to find STORMY WEATHER is here -- thanks, 'nosnipful' for posting. (A link to Joni's AT LAST)

'Could I love Joni more? I think not. I'm feelin' this one. 'Bathed in emotion. Perfection.

    M.... W....

What a perfect summing up, how Joni's take on this Harold Arlen classic leaves the listener "bathed in emotion." Yes, in a word, as you say Marty Wilson: "Perfection." Left a note of my own this night. -- Mark B of the frozen North

  5. B.... ....

Thank you Stacey Hall for exposing me to Joni darn near 40 years ago!

  6. M.... R....

Love her older voice too. Start at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHLtno6b02g&feature=youtu.be&t=20s

Ahora mismo me parece lo más sexy que he escuchado

No smooth flow, almost staccato, and that whine at about 1:08 doesn't help. Compare this to Lena Horne's version and re-think the whole thing. I'm leaving now.

    L.... L....

I think Lena would have appreciated Joni's take on this one. She certainly would have loved the Gordon Jenkins arrangement (same one Sinatra used). And it's from an album whose every track (all others arranged by the great Vince Mendoza) are, all of them, brilliant. So don't leave now! Oh wait. Lee Larson was out of her "1 year ago."

    lovel actually brought me here

  10. E.... G....

Wow! I had no idea she could do this.

  11. P.... ....

sounds very stormy.... almost like the way Etta James would have sang it. it's good joni.

  12. H.... F....

I have a pretty old (30y+) JM album of her back when we all had long hair. Man the way she used to sing sure changed. Is she still as gorgeous as she was in the 70s?

    H.... F....

Are any of us? I like to think I'm still as gorgeous. But I'm about to turn 72 in a couple days and even my wife wouldn't agree. (Everyone's crazy 'cept you and me, Howard Fortyfive, and I'm not sure about you.

  13. S.... G....

I really adore Joni's voice as she has got older, the tone is gorgeous, wonderful stuff😊

  14. L.... S....

this orchestra is so lush....and perfect for Joni's voice....sooooo good....reminiscent of Nelson Riddle.....

    L.... S....

+Lorettamarie Siani This arrangement (unlike all the others on this album, by Vince Mendoza) is by Gordon Jenkins, who did a lot of the classic Sinatra arrangements that Riddle didn't.

@jsbrules Thanks for the informed, concise note, jsbrules. Love that 'gathering storm' orchestral flourishes at the opening -- and then the almost sunny unison violins that were Gordon Jenkins' trademark sound. You can spot one of his arrangement in a heartbeat -- and it was a clever move for Vince Mendoza -- a terrific arranger in his own right (check out AT LAST, my favorite on that album -- an astute move on Mendoza's part to just borrow for Joni's STORMY WEATHER the original Jenkins' chart for Sinatra. Thanks for posting. -- Mark B of the frozen North
