Mitchell, Joni - Love Or Money Lyrics
The firmament of Tinsel Town
Is strung with tungsten stars
Lot's of forty watt successes
He says where's my own shining hour
He's the well kept secret of the underground
Because his only channelled aspiration
Was getting back that girl he had before
He's got stacks and stacks of words that rhyme
Describing what it is to lose
He's got some just for laughs
He's got some for love
That mainline to his blues
Some to shed a little light on you and on me
Some to shed a little light on the human story
The rebel Irish and the promised land Jew
Fighting behind his eyes and over seas
Wounded in action and no ceasefire in view
Brave reporters bring the battles home
But tonight inside that box
Just more bang bang ketchup color to him
Just more Twentieth Century Fox
All because that ghostly girl comes haunting
Just out of reach-outside his bed
And she kicks the covers off his sleep
For the clumsy things he said
She commands his head-She tries his sanity
She demands his head-Tonight unknowingly
Vaguely she floats and lacelike
Blown in like a curtain on the night wind
She's nebulous and naked
He wonders where she's been
He grabs at the air because there's nothing there
Her evasiveness stings him
With long legs-long lonely legs
Bruised from banging into things
One day he was standing just outside her door
He was carrying an armload of bright balloons
She just laughed
She said she heard him knocking
And she teased him for the moon
"Is one the moon, dear clown,
Tied to a string for me?"
He tried but he could not get it down
For truth or for mystery
He tried but he could not get it down
For love or money

Mitchell, Joni Love Or Money Comments
Why oh why isn't this song on any other album? If it is and someone else knows could you please tell me? I think it's perfect in every way. Each musician shines and the mix is superb. Joni's vocals are beyond reproach. She uses her voice more like an instrument here than in most other songs. The combination of Tom Scott and Joni, especially on the last note is breathtaking. I wish everyone could hear this.
The late, great Max Bennett on bass! Max played with everyone, and this song tells us why. RIP.....
Went to this concert, believe it was at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. Awesome outdoor venue but Joni and her inimitable lyrics and musicality were and are, out of this world! I’d be thrilled to see her perform if I had to hide behind bottles in dark cafe, dark cafes...
This is 6/15/18, Joni is the greatest of all time - her music, lyrics, and She is a true humanist. Have you read the book, In Her Own Words. It is her life story.

One of my favorites from the "Aisles" album. Hope Joni is doing better. Thanks for upload.
What a great bass line.
Love this song, the Lyric "Vaguely, she floats in, lace like. Flown in like a Curtain, on the Night Wind" So Sexy, So Joni.
So STEELY DAN... Yes? <3
@soapbxprod Not thinking so Steely Dan - more like LA Express 'cause of Robben Ford and Tom Scott et all. This sound was dynamite.
@beach gal They all played on Steely Dan's albums... Robben Ford played the solo on "Peg" from the "Aja" album, and Tom Scott and his horns played on "Royal Scam", "Aja", "Gaucho"... Tom also wrote arrangements for them.
Yes! have always thought that she has a sound of Steely Dan..i am a huge fan of both artists! Thee best music of the century!💖🎶🎶
Why compare ? take it /them for what they are doing at the moment Comparisons mean nothing
JONI JONI JONI...what else can be said!!!!!!
saw this tour in 1974--first time I ever saw Joni-my GOD what a beautiful, well produced, well played by Tom Scott et al.George Duke, the late John Gueren--fantastic. Takes me back to a wonderful carefree time of life in a very different Pittsburgh, oh to be 24 years old again just for about 24 hours!!
wow, that sounds killer! But did the shows sound like this record? The performances captured on this record are quite unreal.
seems to be a livesaver for more then 1 person!
this song has saved my life at least twice! thank you!! (:
