Mitchell, Joni - Don't Interrupt The Sorrow Lyrics

Don't interrupt the sorrow
Darn right
In flames our prophet witches
Be polite
A room full of glasses
He says, Your notches liberation doll
And he chains me with that serpent
To that Ethiopian wall

Anima rising
Queen of Queens
Wash my guilt of Eden
Wash and balance me
Anima rising
Uprising in me tonight
She's a vengeful little goddess
With an ancient crown to fight

Truth goes up in vapors
The steeples lean
Winds of change patriarchs
Snug in your bible belt dreams
God goes up the chimney
Like childhood Santa Claus
The good slaves love the good book
A rebel loves a cause

I'm leaving on the 1:15
You're darn right
Since I was seventeen
I've had no one over me
He says Anima rising-
So what-
Petrified wood process
Tall timber down to rock!

Don't interrupt the sorrow
Darn right
He says, We walked on the moon
You be polite.
Don't let up the sorrow
Death and birth and death and birth and death and birth
He says, Bring that bottle kindly
And I'll pad your purse-
I've got a head full of quandary
And a mighty, mighty, thirst.

Seventeen glasses
Rhine wine
Milk of the Madonna
Clandestine
He don't let up the sorrow
He lies and he cheats
It takes a heart like Mary's these days
When your man gets weak

Mitchell, Joni Don't Interrupt The Sorrow Comments
  1. B.... ....

I cannot fucking wait until Morrisey dies

  2. V.... A....

Wilton Felder, bass, who played on The Jackson 5's I Want You Back

  3. w.... ....

I am a critic myself, but how can one bear any respect to the category when a guy from Rolling Stone (& I don't mean RS now) wrote about this album of "insubstantial music... Four members of Tom Scott's L.A. Express are featured on Hissing, but their uninspired jazz-rock style completely opposes Mitchell's romantic style" (hey maybe you have to realize Mitchell was never ever soppily romantic?)

    w.... ....

Well, let's be real here. You're only this geeked out by the music because it's old. If it were actually 1975 you wouldn't have the same appreciation for it because it's current. There was a lot of new music in 1995 I thought was stupid, as well as 96, 97, and 98. Now I look back at how great it was. I hate to say it, but all the 70s music is so great because more modern music is so bad.

  4. s.... U....

Super piece, do not forget larry carlton he is also masterly

  6. C.... L....

    Love you Joni❤❤🎶

  7. P.... A....

    Thank you Morrisey

  8. j.... h....

severe warning required, morrisey once of the smiths has done a cover of this ,you have been warned .

    j.... h....

    Yeah and it's fucking gorgeous!

  9. l.... ....

even though i've known the real lyrics for years, i will always hear "enema rising" like i misheard it the first time i listened.

  10. v.... ....

    Mozza 🖤

  11. e.... l....

    Just another hippy bitch.

  12. S.... L....

morrissey covered this on his upcoming album!

i don't want to project my feelings on him and hate his move for wearing a white supremacy badge on jimmy fallon show, i just can't believe that a person who wrote such poetry full of humanity, empathy and smart humor, things like "i know it's over", "i don't owe you anything", "asleep" , "late night maudlin street", "bengali in platforms" (HOW COULD HE AFTER THIS) and so much more, from smiths to solo career

i love joni, i just listened to moz interviewing her...well i just hope that all of moz crazy hate is just some sort of a act...of his arrogance, him being bittersweet about life or something

but this is joni and she is warmth and this album is such a landmark! <3

    S.... L....

    @shapolfab
I hope that I'm not so arrogant that I would tell a black person how he should handle racism, but he is basically telling you to stay out of England. That makes me ill.
"There is a light" but it has flickered out.

    S.... L....

Morrissey’s right-wing sentiments could be seen as coming from an iconoclastic inclination to always kick against the establishment - in this case the prevailing politically correct establishment.

    S.... L....

@John Hannon what would be an example of political correctness that would be so restrictive so as to make you act like you're supporting Nazis?

    S.... L....

Educate yourself before you get all outraged. For Britain is not a white supremacy party for god's sake. My god where are you getting your info from?

    S.... L....

    frank peter
Do you really think that Morrissey is acting like he’s “supporting Nazis?”
Maybe this will help dispel such confusion -

    Or maybe not.

This song takes my breath away each time I hear it. It's by a singer at the top of her game. Astonishing song. Love it so much. Thank you for posting X

Joni Mitchell owned the mid 70's. The three album set of which this is the centerpiece, is arguably the greatest musical/lyrical achievement of anyone, man or woman, in popular music history. Of course there's that troubadour who recently received the Nobel Prize to seriously consider as well. Two sides of the same gold coin.

  15. J.... F....

    Wonderful...darn right.

  16. T.... ....

Joni refers to Liebebefraumilch at the song's end, and plumbs the reference even further, saying, "It takes a heart like Mary"s these days .... "

  17. Z.... ....

I wish I had big speakers so I could play this loud.

  18. p.... ....

Snug in your Bible Belt dreams...

  19. K.... R....

    Joni Mitchell darn right

  20. K.... R....

    Be polite, Canadian eh?

    K.... R....

LOL ... And now with Diana Krall on the scene, hard to refuse ;-)

  21. K.... R....

Everyone should be aware of Joni Mitchell's music.

    K.... R....

Joni is near the top of any Top Ten list of greatest artists of the 20th century. One of three best lyricists, one of five best singers, great guitar player.

  22. D.... S....

    Divinely inspired

  23. C.... H....

My favorite Joni Mitchell album. Listening through the whole record is amazing...

  24. P.... P....

artistry seems so weird to people. big deal. this is amazing and should be normal.

    P.... P....

I agree. I love the 70s music, but I don't see why we can't do that too. The biggest challenge really is getting the actual '70s sound. That's the novel part people are missing when they say "I love the 70s music". Yes, it's the music, but also the sound. better fire up those 2" tape machines folks. Not something newer either; a 24 track 3M machine from 1975 will get this sound, no doubt.

  25. M.... M....

When she was singing this on stage at the Sydney Opera House, I spontaneously ran to the stage stairs to be near her. The security man let me stay. I took some great photos and shared them with him. God Bless Joni. 💙🙏🏻💙😌

    M.... M....

    Let's see them.

  26. D.... C....

"I've got a head full of quandary and a mighty, mighty, mighty thirst."

    D.... C....

    At first,
‚I‘ve got a headful of quandary and a mighty, mighty verse‘
    And btw
Its sadness from a bright sunny day

  27. T.... W....

    The best song. ugh!!!

  28. L.... J....

    love this album!

  29. T.... ....

"I've got a head full of quandary, and a mighty, mighty thirst"

    Joni, I hear you babe!

  30. T.... M....

Going back and listening to Joni's albums, I always felt this was her most underrated record. Unfortunately it had the misfortune of falling between Court and Spark and Hegira. Consider any other artist of the time, and this would have been the album they staked their career upon, and deservedly so.

    T.... M....

She should never have had those drums.....

    T.... M....

    This song is brilliant.

    T.... M....

Yeah it's her best apart from Hejira and Blue. I like it better than Court And Spark which I think is overrated bar a couple of great songs.

    T.... M....

Not by me I have two copies of the CD and it's on every mobile device I own - and the lyrics are so apposite for our times.

  31. A.... B....

Can you believe these lyrics? Yes.
