Mitchell, Joni - Court And Spark Lyrics

Love came to my door with a sleeping roll
And a madman's soul
He thought for sure I'd seen him
Dancing up a river in the dark
Looking for a woman to court and spark

He was playing on the sidewalk for passing change
When something strange happened
Glory train passed through him
So he buried the coins he made in People's Park
And went looking for a woman to court and spark

It seemed like he read my mind
He saw me mistrusting him and still acting kind
He saw how I worried sometimes
I worry sometimes

All the guilty people, he said, they've all seen the stain
On their daily bread
On their Christian names
I cleared myself, I sacrificed my blues
And you could complete me, I'd complete you

His eyes were the colour of the sand and the sea
And the more he talked to me, you know
The more he reached me
But I couldn't let go of L.A.
City of the fallen angels

i was twenty one and decided to leave everything behind,i thought the pain would stay there as well but it did not it followed me like a shadow and i could not free myself from it,alone ,lost living under the bridge in Paris filled with loneliness and self pity,i started wandering about how important it was to live, roaming around Paris famous sites,i went to the library for something to distract me from the burden i was carrying and i stumbled upon a record section where i
saw an album cover with a beautiful lady dressed in black, the name of the album intrigued me Hejira, for some reason it fit perfectly the lady in black,i asked the library attendant if i could listen to it and i did, everything changed 48 years later i listen to that lady and it always makes me feel good, thank you Joni.

When my mom wanted to get rid of me, she sent me to my room with Joni Mitchell records! :) Joni was her lifelong favorite, and became my favorite. When Mom died, I tucked a Court and Spark CD into her coffin.

    J.... H....

That's a beautiful story, may she rest in peace. :) My mom is also a fan of Joni, she told that when she was learning guitar (in the mid 70's), she learned the instrument by playing Joni Mitchell songs.

    J.... H....

    What a beautiful parting gift.

    J.... H....

    A masterpiece, start to finish.

  19. F.... M....

Decades ago, an old friend, Bobby Ingram, brought both her and Buffet to Miami to perform in his club. The rest is history. Her live performance on Free Man in Paris is one of the finest songs ever put to video, accompanied with a legendary back up band. Many have left us long ago. If you have no seen this incredible performance with Jaco Pastorious, Richard Brecker, Don Alias and others, look for it. I promise you that you will NOT be disappointed!

  22. K.... M....

Joni - what an incredible poet, singer - one of the greatest songwriters of all time. thank you for this:)

    K.... M....

Perhaps THE greatest. I can't think of anyone better.

  23. C.... D....

I just found this on vinyl in a free box!

    C.... D....

    Great find.

    C.... D....

    Music to set you free!

  24. J.... G....

Joni's songs are her intensely-private innermost feelings and thoughts-- always. She has said that she only sings what she feels-- brutally honest. Honesty! "Stoking the star-making machinery behind the popular song"! She told it like it is, exactly. Read the book Reckless Daughter, its expertly written by someone who has a really good understanding of her--- which is a feat few people have been able to do. She's mercurial, constantly changing , through the albums, through her life, but the why and wherefore of these changes emerges as the book unfolds.

    J.... G....

Joni is in dire straits now as are many of us old farts who cut our teeth and fell in love to this wondrous album. She is one of the most amazing American song writers and performers in the history of pop and rock music. I, as so many others did, fell in love to this wonderful album. Pray for sweet Joni.

    J.... G....

Thank you. I will read that book.

  25. k.... ....

I have to force back the tears every time I hear or discuss the lyrics to the title track .. and have lost the battle more times than any "real man" is supposed to admit.

    k.... ....

    I understand.

  26. S.... K....

Never has there been such a profound artist in modern times. She and I were one most of my young years playing the piano and guitar as a closet folk musician. Too shy to be front and center. I learned so much from her. She was not just my musical mentor....but a best friend through the 'trouble child' times. Thank you Joni.

    S.... K....

    S Kirk - 👏👏🎼Her Sense Of Harmony / Chord Structure(s) - And Alternate Tunings - Is OTHERWORLDLY ❤️🙌JONI🙌

    S.... K....

    That's pretty special .really

    S.... K....

she's a tough one to get used to, but once you get on her wavelength, she is the spiritual and musical guide that can help you to get through your adolescence and your life. She is undoubtedly one of the greatest artists alive, in my humble opinion!

  27. D.... D....

One of the most beloved albums from my early college days. I still love it, especially Court and Spark.  65 now, and I, too, still can't let go of L.A. This is a most excellent posting. Mahalo plenty.

    D.... D....

    Thank you.

    D.... D....

It is such an an incredible album by an incredibly gifted artist. So touching the lyrics of the title track you refer to., especially that last verse...
His eyes were the color of the sand
    And the sea
And the more he talked to me
    The more he reached me
    But I couldn't let go of L.A.
