Mitchell, Joni - Cool Water Lyrics

All day I face the barren waste
Without a taste of water
Cool water
Old Dan and I
Our throats slate dry
Our spirits cry out for water
Cool clear water
Keep on movin' Dan
Some devils had a plan
Buried poison in the sand
Don't drink it man
It's in the water
Cool clear water
In my mind I see
A big green tree
And a river flowin' free
Waitin' up ahead
For you and me
Cool clear water

The nights are cool and I'm a fool
Each star is a pool of water
Cool water
But come the dawn
We carry on
We won't last long without water
Cool clear water
Keep on movin' Dan
We're still in no-man's land
Dry bones and sand
People never planned here for water
Cool clear water
In my mind I see
A big green tree
And a river flowin' free
Waiting up ahead for you and me
Cool clear water

The shadows sway
They seem to say
Tonight we pray for water
Cool water
And way up there
If you care
Please show us where
There's good water
Cool clear water

Mitchell, Joni Cool Water Comments
  1. Oliver Flanagan

Reminds me of the gospel song" how great thou art"

  2. James Osborne

This Youtube upload has SKIPS at 2:50...disturbing a great song experience.

  3. AHC63

    Cool...clear...water.

  4. Peter Teipe

I came back to this song recently, and missed it. She is on point with this song, and I'm a huge fan of Michael Landau's guitar playing. There is something very serene about this song. Definitely a hidden gem in Joni's catalog of releases.

  5. Craig Guthier

Art isn't a contest between whose better. The words of this song are based off an old poem written in the 20's but I certainly could be off on my time line. Whenever an artist does a well known song they make their own. It's much easier to look at music and art for that matter in that context. It gets tiring hearing whose the best. These folks didn't decide to be artists to be compared to their peers. I've been listening to Joni's music since the 60's and it's always like the first time. She does with her music as she does with her art, she shares it with us and I am personally grateful.

Whoever gave this a thumbs down, either have zero appreciation for quality music, had a slip of the finger, or they’re total trolls.

This song should have millions of klicks!! It is in my top 20 of my life!

  12. Phil Thomas

Nice harmonies with Willie. My all time favorite version of "Cool Water" since 1988.

  13. Blue Tang

Just thought Youtube might have this song, half remembered from childhood in the '50s, in its archives. Stunned to find it here, sung by JM, one of my very favorite singers, and whose every song from first album to last, I'd have bet yo a dollar I had heard a dozen times. What a treat! Thank you!

  14. Joanne Young

I love this album. My summer time floating in the pool relaxation music.

  15. Lonnie and Candice Pritzen

The Poetess...The Goddess! All smooth and perfect, like the raining music on a parched and dying culture.

  16. lizzabbott

    Beautiful !!!

  17. Casper Van straaten

one of several standout tracks on an album I still listen to, my first encounter with Ms Mitchell's sublime music, nearly 30 years ago. Despite some criticism of the 80's production sound of the album as a whole, I found it fresh sounding back then and it has not dated imo; comments on such are understandable though if one considers her sound during the 1970s; I suppose for each generation there is a different set of criteria. Thanks for posting.

  18. Elroy Aston

for my birthday in 88 i got this Lp and Bad Brains, Eye Against Eye. haha

  19. David Holman

Spellbinding, enchantingly beautiful song with a dream-like quality. One of her most under-rated songs and I love it.

    Cathy Kunze

David Holman I was looking through for some of my favorite songs that not many of my friends have heard. I am always haunted by this extraordinary version when I think of either one of these artists. Truly as was said “enchantingly beautiful... very under-rated” for sure. I have always thought that for many years!!! Glad to see someone else thinks that to. 👍🏼👏🏼

    Gerald Colgrove

@Cathy Kunze add me to the club. Amen to you both. I close my eyes and i am floating in the air whenever i hear this.

  20. Mark Cornwell

This song grow more relevant with each passing day. It is another example of the "canary in the mine shaft" and we need to listen.

  21. Robert Johnson

Joni works her special magic and makes this song her own. Beautiful version from and equally great album.

    ImNotMad ButUR

Robert Johnson A great song, and a wonderful, wonderful remake of it, which takes us all the way to the slaked thirst, for want of its coolness, clearness. The body of work encompasses more than just the words.

But - why does it skip?!?!!??? My album, quick, quick!

  22. VTtom62

The Mrs and I fell in love to this album... ❤️

  23. trfesok

Also covered by Fleetwood Mac (actually, just Lindsey Buckingham & John McVie) in 1982 So, I put all 3 including the original by the Sons of the Pioneers) in my Joni playlist. Thanks for the upload!

  24. katalina afu

This is such a beautiful song - The best sentiment I've heard for a song - We take our water for granted on this earth

    lizzabbott

Yes and water has been proven to be sentient. Check out Dr Emoto's books on Amazon ( even if just to read synopsis & reviews), and his videos on YouTube ( R.I.P.).

    Ralph Lee

Water is a source of life appreciate it!!

  25. igamalou

This will be an anthem when Oil isn't a factor in the future. Love this song.

    death2pc

Much of your computer is made from.............., that's right, oil. Oops!

  26. Regan Morgan

    ⚡️💫🌟

  27. David Hughes

I love this song. I'd like to hear more collaboration with Joni and Willie.

    wh foy

David Hughes I’d love to hear Joni in any form at this point...since her devastating stroke. She’s easily one of the most talented artists the world over during her lifetime. Sadly, I’m never seen her perform live, but I have all of her albums. I love Willie too.

  28. donald Mcneilly

Canadian Bob Nolan was a trail song genius.

  29. Christian Landaeta Torres

    Gem...full stop.

  30. Phillip Pacheco

I completely forgot how wonderful this one is.  Joni, get well.

  31. Steve McCarthy

My favourite number, by two of my favourite performers. Such quality is very rare.

  32. David Mayhew

Powerful rendition. Who would think these two would be so good together?! Should have been a big hit.

    ImNotMad ButUR

David Mayhew Nah, there’s that “mainstream” thing that ruins things for the rest of us.

  33. Matthew Ott

    so sweet...thank you...

  34. Troy Lewis

Willie Nelsons so sweet on this
