Minnie Riperton - Rainy Day In Centerville Lyrics

Sitting all alone I hear the tapping of the rain
Dance ballerina dance
Talking with the rain in some small city I feel the pain
She's dancing all alone

Thinking how we'd wait together
Sitting by the fire in weather just like this
Playing lovers' games; hoping the rain would never end

And I thought about the night we met
How the gentle rain fell down, kissed the ground
Then I knew no one ever could take your place

Sitting all alone I hear the tapping of the rain
Dance ballerina dance
Talking with the rain in some small city I feel the pain
She's dancing all alone

Nothing seems the same but the falling rain
You've gone away
Walking by the sea; sitting beneath a tree
You are not here

And I thought about the night we met
How the gentle rain fell down, kissed the ground
Then I knew no one ever could take your place

This song take a few listens to actually appreciate its lyricism. I dare say that the most beautiful part of the song occurs between 4:22 - 4:32 (the background 'LAs') and has to be the prettiest 10 seconds of music I've heard in a LONG time!

  28. e.... ....

RIP Minnie & Charles One day we all will hear that beautiful voice and those heavenly arrangements in Heaven.

  29. R.... ....

    Real Live:Crime is money(1994)

  30. n.... ....

it mite b a stupid question but is that her whistling at the end?

  31. N.... C....

Wow! I consider this album to be her best work. It captures her beauty naturally without all of the hit making production of that time. This is a listener's dream. In Minnie's garden, one can be free from the ills that plague their minds. Thanks Minnie and Charles.

Bless your family! Your father brought happiness into the lives of so many of us. I suffer from heart disease myself. One day we will defeat the disease that took your father away and left this world a much poorer place. Cancer as well which took Minnie Ripperton from us. May God give us the wisdom to defeat these killers!

I loved this song from the moment I heard it for the first time back in 2000. Although, it was my Godbrother Paul who told me that Minnie was actually singing in the chorus: "Dance ballerina dance". I was totally clueless. Minnie could make a belch sound classy. Thank GOD there's only one Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph.

  34. M.... ....

"...no one could ever take your place..." Minnie.

R.I.P. Minnie Riperton & the greatest producer/arranger of all time - Charles Stephney.

  35. C.... W....

Many people aren't familiar with Charles Stepney. Therefore, the family has uploaded a video entitled Interrupted Greatness The Chares Stepney Story. It is a synopsis of the Stepney daughters lives with and without him. Check it out if you can.

    Thank you

  36. M.... ....

Minnie was a phenomenal artist, and this orchestra is off the chain!

  37. b.... ....

  39. S.... ....

There was another version of this song recorded by Ramsey Lewis that Real Live sampled on "Crime Is Money" in '96.

  40. l.... ....
