Millsap, Parker - Old Time Religion Lyrics
He's got old time religion
Buries his cash in a coffee can
And he makes his decisions
Down on his knees yeah he's a full grown man
And he had a vision
You could call it superstition
You could run just as fast as you can
He took a beating
His father screamed at the top of his lungs
An Old Testament reading
If you spare the rod you spoil the son
He's got scars for his bleeding
Fear of God fills everyone
You can listen to Him pleading
Pleadings for the holy son (to)
Give me that old time religion
Give me that old time religion
Give me that old time religion
It's good enough for me
He's got a King James edition
With all of the words of Christ in red
And he reads the inscription
Every night when he goes to bed
And he goes fishing
For sin in men like Jesus said
Got an old time conviction
Keeps the bodies in the shed
He had a woman
Took her to church every Sunday morn
He said submit to your husband
Submit to me thus, sayeth the Lord
Well he never saw it coming
When she tried to get away in his '34 Ford
Now a widower is strumming on a banjo with a missing cord
Give me that old time religion
Give me that old time religion
Give me that old time religion
It's good enough for me
Give me that old time religion
Give me that old time religion
Give me that old time religion
It's good enough
It's good enough
It's good enough for me

Being from the Carolinas, this song reminds me of old folk songs we grew up hearing. There's an actual old folk song called "Old Time Religion" lol. I love this song, it reminds me of Tom Waits too.
the whole song is about that actually. the song sort of parodies it in a dark way.
When it says "the words of christ in red", does it mean that he's highlighted them for easier reading, or he's blotted them out because they're too forgiving & loving (compared to Old Testament)? Or something else entirely?
Some Bibles, especially the King James version he sings of, use red ink for the words of Christ.
Many bibles (especially KJV versions) are "red letter editions" where literally every word that is a direct quote from Christ is printed in red ink instead of black. So its talking about the kind of bible he owned.
oh my lord
Love it

I'd like to sit with the folk who inspired these lyrics. Damn deep. Yes sir, deep.
come to illinois river jam then! Sept 29th.
Yeah alright fat wife
Is it just me or is this song a little too similar to Jolie Holland's Old Fashioned Morphine? I smell a copycat.
Seems like an adaptation with new lyrics mixed in

they're both parody of the same gospel song
Interesting conversation, fuckheads. Thanks for that. Now nobody knows what spirit is. Suffocating bitches. Hate does indeed help to keep your soul intact. If you lie to your soul you're gonna have to enjoy a song like this, like me.
#1 song on the playlist for Taurus btw
Love this song so much! It half-terrifies me, half makes me want to burst out laughing.
+Katie Connor What's to laugh at? It's about Christ bleeding for you...
Me thinks you weren't listening to the lyrics of this fine track.
...No, not at all. It's all based on one man who: reads the bible, got beatings from his father, prays to Christ, fishes for men like Jesus said, has murdered people, and got married.
Unless you're trying to tell me that Jesus read a book that wasn't written until after he died, risen, and ascended to Heaven, that he prayed to himself, murdered people, married a woman, and owned a truck from a time period and place that didn't even exist in his time.
In fact, he murdered his wife!
Epic :)
great!:)
