Melua, Katie - Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out Lyrics

Once I lived the life of a millionaire,
Spending all my money, I didn´t care.
Taking my friends out for a magic time,
Bought whiskey, champagne and wine.

Then I began to fall so low,
Lost all my good friends, I didn´t know where to go.
If I get my hands on a dollar again,
I'm gonna hang on to it till that eagle grins.

Cause no, no, nobody knows you
When you're down and out.
In my pocket, not one penny,
And my friends, I haven´t any.

When I finally get back up on my feet again,
Everybody wanna be my long-lost friend.
It's mighty strange, without a doubt,
Nobody knows you when you're down and out.
Nobody... when you´re down and out.

Nobody knows you
When you´re down and out.
In my pocket, not one penny,
And my friends, I haven´t any.

When I get myself back on my feet again,
Everybody wanna be my long-lost friend.
It's mighty strange, without a doubt,
Nobody knows you when you're down and out.

...when you're down and out.
...when you're down and out.

  4. D.... D....

This is so Special to my wife and I, we think that Katie is so Talented, why doesn't she   get much airside on the Radio we don't understand.

  5. B.... L....

a new fan from Hong Kong, cheers :)

  6. D.... D....

I'm sorry but I have heard this song sung by the Blues, but never as good as this, she can put her voice to any song and make it sound new, Mr Patrick O'Brien should Listen to Katies other Records before commenting on this one. I Love This as I Love her Other Records

  7. B.... ....

    What a lovely voice.
But she doesn't go as deep as this song require.

Perhaps, a less massive arrangement would much more suits her way to sing.
I mean what this tuba bass line has to do there? It only deserves Katie's voice.

BTW it's not really a problem : I hope that one day another (i.e. more intelligent) producer will come upon the voice take and make another more consistent arrangement.

My 2 cents in french translated english !

  8. R.... S....

    Wow
    Wat a powerful voice

    Lyrics :

Once I lived the life of a millionaire
Spendin' my money, I didn't care
I carried my friends out for a good time
Buying bootleg liquor, champagne and wine

Then I began to fall so low
I didn't have a friend and no place to go
So if I ever get my hand on a dollar again
I'm gonna hold on to it till them eagle's grin

    Nobody knows you
    When you're down and out
In my pocket not one penny
And my friends, I haven't any

But if I ever get on my feet again
Then I'll meet my long lost friend

Nobody knows you when you're down and out
I mean when you're down and out

When you're down and out, not one penny
And my friends, I haven't any and I felt so low
Nobody wants me 'round their door

    Without a doubt
No man can use you when you're down and out
I mean when you're down and out

  10. M.... S....

Te amo katye melua de Soberanes !!!!

  11. B.... M....

I tend to agree with that opinion. Although the instrumental is awesome and she does have a splendid voice. This rendition sounds similar to the female White artists of the Thirties without that whiny baby doll voice.

  12. A.... K....

Fantastische zangeres, met een mooie zuivere stem, mag haar graag horen zingen.

  13. J.... E....

Personal preference is largely a matter of taste.

  14. B.... F....

anybody else get an Olivia Newtown John/Ann Margaret flashback now n then when listening to Katie melua?

  15. C.... M....

I like Katie singing mournful, melodic songs, these are often extremely touching & skilfully sung. Agree with comment below, her voice doesn't suit Blues though (personally don't like her sliding up to notes in particular). But she is very talented no doubt. Perhaps it's this thing about being careful about what songs you choose to sing.

  16. B.... ....

This is so much closer t Bessie smiths version

  17. b.... ....

Wouldn't care if she couldn't sing a note.

  18. J.... S....

Uma grande verdade. Ninguém se junta aos vencidos.
Quando estás na mó de baixo ninguém te conhece nem tens amigos.

  19. C.... V....

Never mind the music, this woman is gorgeous!

  20. h.... ....

    すべていい、心に響きます

  21. L.... a....

i prefer this one...not much improvement on the song...really enjoy it

  22. H.... A....

Not bad but nowhere near as good as Nina Simone's version

  23. K.... _....

is there a backing for this?

  24. m.... i....

I like more the original version

  25. P.... L....

lennon has the same named song

  26. m.... s....

Meg F:  Katie is indeed amazing.   I am glad you found her too, as I did on youtube.  Two of my favorites by her are 'Blowin' in the Wind' and 'When You Taught me How to Dance.'  Of course, I love just about everything she does, and have most of her CDs now.  Hope you keep enjoying her, and if you have not found Sissel yet, I urge you to listen to her as well.  Fantastic Norwegian singer.  Good luck!

  27. P.... O....

This lady has a lovely voice, some might say sweet, but it is not a voice for the blues, especially a blues like this that needs a lower pitch and the odd growl. One does not get the impression that she has suffered, unlike the original singer Bessie Smith. Janice Joplin did do it well even though she added lyrics but they were pertinent to the flavour of the song.

    P.... O....

+Patrick O'Brien -- Who's might this "one" of whom you speak be? I always wonder about that when I come across the construction employing it for supposed objective perception, because invariably it never can speak for all. Here, this is especially so when applied to music; because if "one," here, is busier requiring "suffering" of the voice in the air than trying to appreciate it for its own merits, perhaps the music has no chance of freshness or of success, as a monolithic predetermined template in one listener's brain that says "blues songs must convey [enter quality here ] to be proper blues songs" is quite unbeatable. Pure voices can sing the blues too, and as for suffering, catharsis is a personal thing, & in different people is inspired by different empathic communication-styles. Thus, I cry at Doctor Who, while you perhaps do not; and any song that mixes into my history of suffering tells its tale without regard for convention, as suffering has no conventions. Herein, while Ms. Melua's pure & good tones point out rationally that Fortuna places everyone's "fate" on her wheel (so to speak), she does in fact illustrate the assertion with the occasional rasp & growl, sweet of sound as they may be. But no experience of suffering is needed to do this, just as we don't need an Irish person to tell us the innumerable facets of Joyce's "Ulysses," nor a Platonist to discourse upon the philosophy in "The Republic," nor a pre-Raphaelite to discourse on color & tone in Millais's "Ophelia." Or so it would seem.

    P.... O....

She could be, like, a Disney cat or something;p

    P.... O....

    C'est vrai.

    P.... O....

Her voice more Jazzy than blues....and it's fabulous

    P.... O....

    I love clapton's acoustic version

  28. j.... ....

SHE WAS JUST BEEN SATTIN DARE - I THANK SHE WASN'T EVEN LIP STANKIN.

  29. r.... ....

sometimes angels are sent to this earth because gods are too jealous of then ,she is one such.

  30. l.... d....

I love how she incorporated a lot of the elements from the original version (:

  31. K.... H....

    Pretty version

  32. G.... B....

Katie is from Georgia and i hope she never forget her country...

  35. T.... c....

this song was originally a jazz song written for bessie smith but has been covered by many blues artists who each do their own interpitation of this song

  37. M.... ....

She has such a sweet voice and very natural for this kind of music . I just love her vibrato.

And turning such a jewel 'Nobody Knows you When you're down and out' from Bessie Smith into something more modern. Love both versions though to death.

  38. m.... s....

Just found Katie today;  she is amazing.  Too bad we in the States don't know of these wonderful artists.  Just like I found Sissel a few months ago . . . new fans abound.  Katie is so talented!
