Mellencamp, John - Without Expression Lyrics

Have you ever ridden horses through a rainstorm?
Or a lion through a busy street bazarre?
There are many things I'd love to turn you on to
But somehow I feel they're safer where they are

Yes, there's a man I know
With no expression
He's got none at all
Yes, there's a man that I know
With no expression, darling
He's got none at all

Well, some people are inbound with infatuation
And some others spill depression as the law
From one's mother getting at no imagination
So beware then, maybe sin is at your door

Yes, there's a man that I know
With no expression
He's got none at all
Yes, there's a man I know
With no expression
He's got none at all

But you may never, never
See this man laughing
Come to think of it,
I've never seen him cry
But he might be sitting
And you hear him singing
And by and by he'll stop and sigh
Before his voice would even begin to speak
And he'd just cry

Yes, There's a man I know
With no expression, darling
He's got none at all
Yes, There's a man that I know
With no expression
He's got none at all

Have you ever, ever ridden horses through a rainstorm?
Or a lion through a busy street bazarre?
There are many things I'd love to turn you on to
But somehow I feel they're safer where they are

Yes, There's a man that I know
With no expression
He's got none at all
There's a man that I know
With no expression
He's got none at all

  7. A.... ....

    Superb Version!

  8. E.... M....

don't like Mellencamp's version of the great song only Terry Reid can sing this

  9. P.... ....

I had not even heard of Reid prior to this year, this was one of my favorite JCM songs. And it is a good cover. However, pretty hard to match up to Reid's voice for anyone. And keep in mind that Reid sang clean, without the harmonies and all the backing and enhancements to make a voice sound better than it is. I'm sure JCM would be first to admit this, Robert Plant does.

    P.... ....

You complicate the song too much. Heard JM sing it live. You should try it. Mr. Reid sang it brilliantly. This is a cover, interpretation if you will. Chill and enjoy.

  10. j.... ....

one of the besdt JM song folks have never heard, done by REO, The Hollies, and Terry Reid(who was almost the lead singer of the New Yardirds/Led zeppelin

  11. N.... J....

The bashing of Terry Reid could stop. John Cougar is awesome. But to put down Terry Reid the way I have read on here pisses me off. He was actually a VERY talented folk musician. This song may not have been his best, and I can agree John Cougar done a wonderful cover.I had no clue Terry Reid wrote this until just recently. Just pull up some other songs of Reid's and you will hear the talent in his voice and strings. As far as the Reo Speedwagon cover,I could do without it,reminds me of nails on a chalkboard.I have been a rock and folk fan my whole life and that is the facts about Terry Reid.

    N.... J....

Teerry Reid version great, he was asked to be Lead SINGER of the New Yardbirds but turned it down, Led Zep.

    N.... J....

joey christy Terry Reid was not a fault musician you dumbass you don't know s*** about Terry Reid obviously

  12. G.... G....

    the best song ever

  13. J.... T....

In my mind, and I love a lot of his music, this is his best tune.

  14. S.... D....

I love your songs John Mellencamp  I liked all on The best you could.

  15. R.... B....

Just found out that this is Terry Reid's song and not Reo Speedwagon who i originally thought recorded it. Mellencamps version steamrollers over Reo's version. I should check out Terry Reid's version.

    R.... B....

As far as Reo goes i like a bunch of tunes from their first album (Terry Lutrell Vocals). I cant stand Kevin Cronin's voice, i do love a tune called Back On The Road Again. Im not sure who the vocalist is but i wish he got more leads instead of Mr. Nasal LOL

    R.... B....

There is a Hollies version as well, slightly reworded.

    R.... B....

Bruce Hall the basist, did a few song, that was one of his.

    R.... B....

Rocky B Terry Reid wrote the song

  16. A.... G....

I think this song was released as a single in 1996 or '97. I remember working at a steel mill and this song would come on the rock n roll radio.

  17. M.... P....

If anyone else had covered this song it would have failed. JM has the best voice to pull it off and make it just as good if not better than the original.

    M.... P....

It is a good cover. But not Better than Terry's version . Just my opinion.

    M.... P....

This song was done by the Hollies in 1968, then Crosby, Stills & Nash a couple years later. It was titled "Horses Through a Rainstorm (Man with No Expression)" but it's the same song.

    M.... P....

Not better. Original REO Speedwagon version. https://youtu.be/FR3Ex1QdXI0

  18. S.... ....

I don't care how original this song sounds with others singing... Covers don't get better than this!! It could've easily been a song by JCM... Reid is awesome for writing this master piece!!

  19. c.... ....

What a great cover of Terry Reid's song.

  20. h.... l....

    100 percent Agree, great remake.

  21. R.... R....

What an under appreciated remake of a meaningful song, That's my 2 ccents

    R.... R....

    Rick Raubeson m. he

    R.... R....

Rick Raubeson JCM definitely does this song justice!!! I loved it by REO in my younger days, too!!!

    R.... R....

    Very very under appreciated
