Mellencamp, John - This Time Lyrics

I've had a lot of girls in my life
They never meant that much to me
A good time was always had by all
But those good times, they were fleeting memories
I used to lie to them and then I'd kiss them
But I kept them an arm's length away
Well hey man now you know me
And look how silly I been acting today

[Chorus:]
This time I really think I'm in love, I'm in love
This time I think I'm really in love
This time I really think I'm in love
This time I think I'm really in love

I used to roll down the window
And let that tape deck blow
And look at the honey I was holding that night
I'd say, "Hey girl you're the one"
And then I'd laugh when I'd take her home
You got your arms around my shoulders
You got my soul confused with my heart
You were too smart to believe all those tired lines
And I was too dumb to know what had started

I hope you don't lose that innocent laughter
I hope time doesn't take that away

[Chorus]

  11. B.... M....

Mellencamp said on Howard Stern in 2017 that he hates this song.

    B.... M....

Baron Moritani I have to agree with him.

    It’s shit.

  12. M.... M....

Does anyone else think the main chorus line of the song, "You're Welcome" from Disney's Moana was ripped off from this song?

  13. d.... ....

hugely underrated song, deserves way more views...
now one of my favourite songs

    d.... ....

Must be springtime.just another love song.then the rains come by splashing down.i keep telling myself This Time.this is the longest I've been sober.whats going on hear.

  16. A.... S....

    Someone in 2018 ???

    A.... S....

I recall when the album was new. "This Time" and "Hot Night" got regular play.

    A.... S....

Right here! I may only be 22 but fuck today's music long live the 80's!

    A.... S....

    Alex Segura and 2019 😀

    A.... S....

    I enjoy this in 2019.

  17. F.... U....

Sounds like something huey Lewis felt was too demeaning even for his standards..:)

  18. S.... Q....

i heard in an interview john hated this song, he wanted to do more kick ass stuff

    S.... Q....

Some of his later stuff is abysmal compared to this.

  19. C.... L....

This song is very underrated, along with Small Paradise, and Night Dancing too!! You never hear those songs being played on the radio, ever!!

    C.... L....

Another one of his, Hot Night in a Cold Town, never gets airplay!

    C.... L....

"This Time" got regular airplay when it was still new. So did "Hot Night..." I'm fairly certain "Hot Night" survived longer, though.

  20. D.... M....

I liked how those two ladies at the beginning clanked their champagne glass together with timing.

  21. P.... ....

    I LOVE JHON!

  22. N.... a....

My opinion greatest song this cat ever recorded

    N.... a....

    N.... a....

Thank God Elvin Bishop did it first!!

    N.... a....

    I agree!

  23. C.... S....

    Awe Edith Massey <3

  24. A.... F....

Early Mellencamp , just a pop song. Catchy sing along, nothing else. His better work ato follow

    A.... F....

I want to say it's sad that his pop rock is what is most recognizable and celebrated but it's hard to considering how Goddamn catchy it still is today.

  25. T.... ....

always loved this song:) way UNDERATED:(

  26. R.... P....

    great song

  27. T.... G....

Catchy song. Mellencamp's pianist on this the song and video made another worldwide Top 10, and you wouldn't want to know for what.

    T.... G....

What did the man playing the piano do?

    T.... G....

+Analyse Schell He was charged with having sex with minors. He was profiled on America's Most Wanted.

  28. M.... C....

    Under The dome <3

  31. A.... A....

WOW Edith Massey in a John Cougar video! R.I.P. Edith (May 28, 1918 - Oct. 24, 1984) She was in a bunch of John Waters movies. I Love Edith ♥. Great taste Mr. Cougar. Ain't Even Done With The Night & This Time are my 2 fave John Cougar songs.

  32. k.... ....

    Beautiful song, Hideous video.

  33. J.... F....

My girlfriend asked me if I was "in love" with her last night. I told her yes, I woke up thinking of this song and immediately sent it to her.

  34. h.... ....

I know what you mean, it does remind me of Elvin Bishop.

    h.... ....

It was obviously inspired by "Fooled around and fell in love".

    h.... ....

Do you mean fooled around an fell in love.i like both songs.cuse I fooled around and fell in love.

  35. B.... ....

yeh yeh...but we wanna know what ya did after ya said that

  36. O.... R....

JCM like the line "Hope you didn't lose that innocent laughter, hope time didn't take that away" so much he used it in two song. This and To MG.

  37. D.... W....

Did that 1 woman with teeth missin', get prettier through the ensuin' years?

  38. D.... W....

I'm surprised that John, himself, didn't smoke in this vid.

  39. D.... W....

Au contraire. I know both those artists well.

  40. D.... W....

John hit #27 in Billboard, 12-6-80. I just pray that John's quit smokin' by now. I wouldn't wanna smoke MYself to death! God bless ya, Shaun, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed week!

  44. T.... ....

Sounds like a timeless classic that nobody ever heard...kinda got a Frankie Vallie ring to it or Elvin Bishop. Anyone who reads this has no idea what I mean.

  45. S.... ....

I love this song but John said he hated it, and it was garbage.. I disagree.

  46. F.... M....

    Good times man!

  47. D.... W....

John hit #27 in Billboard, 12-6-80. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  52. c.... j....

acctually John wasn't all that young here he was born in 1951 so he was almost 30 here JFYI

  53. w.... a....

    that's what I'm talking about!!!!

  54. D.... H....

was dating my wife in 1980, right in the middle of having sex we stopped heard this song..and said this is cool.....

  55. D.... B....

@thisux7x7 Yah, but no one in 1980 could have predicted the success of Mellencamp a couple years later. His talent didn't even really come thru on record till American fool or Uh-huh....Scarecrow and Lonesome Jubilee.....He put out 4 albums in a row that was his peak.

  56. c.... ....

Right been listenin' to this old tune... This time I really feel I'm in love, I'm in love... This time I know for sure how I'm in love.... I'm in love (I meant I quite apreciate U)... This time... This is our time!!

  57. w.... a....

  58. f.... ....

All Times Universal John Cougar Mellencamp!

  59. f.... ....

Go Ahead..en Love Me!..if I were His Bride to Be inside Any Woman to Save Me!

  60. D.... W....

Hope John has wisely quit smokin' by now. Doesn't he know that he's puttin' poison in his body with every cigarette he smokes? Hit #27 in Billboard. God bless!

  61. D.... H....

edith massey, the toothless "love" was from baltimore, maryland and appeared in some john waters movies...she passed away in the 90`s...

  62. c.... ....

Mellencamp has always hated this song. When he did play it in the early 80's he sped it up, almost unrecognizable, to this version.

  63. T.... B....

This is one of my favorites, too. I've been to 3 of his concerts and he has never performed it. Listening to it now because my granddaughter was looking for it!

  64. h.... ....

One of JCM's least played hits, but definitly my favorite. I was watching a TV commercial and saw his wife and it made me think of this song. Thank heavens for YouTube and shaunocouger for the great post.

  65. a.... ....

  74. t.... ....

I have always loved this song...AND THIS VIDEO!!!!

  75. E.... B....

this one is for my nephew melvin III hid jam!!!!

  76. J.... L....

The Lyric in this song at 3:08: "I Hope you didn't lose that innocent laughter. Hope time didn't take that away." The same lyric is also in his song "To M.G (Wherever She May Be)" from the same album: "Hope you didn't lose that innocent laughter. Oh God, hope time didn't take that away." I always thought that was strange he'd use the same lyric in 2 songs. He rocks though, we've seen him in 7 different states and got back stage passes last time - got to meet the band but not John himself.

  77. V.... K....

The "hot" women is edith massey, made famous by John Waters (director) she was amazing in everything she did, the movie "polyester" and "Desperate Living" are among my favorites

  78. M.... G....

"This Time" was the one song that got me hooked on John Cougar, as he was known back then. I remember hearing it for the first time going to work one morning. Catchy tune that may not have charted very well, but, he could absolutely "ROCK"! We soon found out he was no "one hit wonder" when American Fool came out, his "breakthrough" album.

My old boss, who was from Bedford, IN, had listened to John Cougar when he was just starting out.

  79. D.... ....

What an underrated John Mellencamp tune.
