Excellent comparison. The Kirkwoods were actually huge Deadheads in the late 70's, early 80s. In the book Meet the Meat Puppets both of the brothers mention this. Curt is quoted as saying that "without the Dead there would be no Meat Puppets." Not of course in terms of style but in terms of attitude and approach.
