Meat Puppets - On Lyrics
You fools, you geniuses
Take your flight to the dawn
The all in its emptiness
Makes a break for the sun
Keeps the tide from rolling on
On, on
There in the afterglow
When the feelings are all gone
The stars float across the sky
To escape from the sun
But the high life is a straggler
And it keeps on holding on
Somewhere in my empty head
I hear a distant song
And it sings to the end of day
And after day is gone
Like an old broken record
It just keeps on playing on
On, on
Like an old broken record
It just keeps on playing on
On, on

Meat Puppets On Comments
The song is incredible. When you realize the subtle meaning of it being an afterlife and or religion. It's beautifully depressing.
Forgive Kurt for putting his own voice to this song. He truly and wanted to bring this alive its original way.
Pretty good cover, but the original by Britney Spears is still better.
Many a hand has scaled the grand old face of the plateau
Some belong to strangers and some to folks you know
Holy ghosts and talk show hosts are planted in the sand
To beautify the foothills and shake the many hands
There's nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop
And an illustrated book about birds
You see a lot up there but don't be scared
Who needs actions when you got words
When you're finished with the mop then you can stop
And look at what you've done
The plateau's clean no dirt to be seen
And the work it took was fun
There's nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop
And an illustrated book about birds
You see a lot up there but don't be scared
Who needs actions when you got words
Well the many hands began to scan around for the next plateau
Some said it was Greenland and some said Mexico
Some decided it was nowhere except for where they stood
But those were all just guesses, wouldn't help you if they could
I would put that very high on list of best songs ever written
Good cover but Nirvana did it best
Not in the same league as the original.
Kurt had good taste...i need to get this now
Once you really think about it. As humans, we are all meat puppets.
One of the best songs I've ever heard
The funny thing is, Nirvanas best songs were leadbelly or meat puppets songs. Nirvana were fucking amateurs except Grohl.
Who needs the Meat Puppets when you have Nirvana...jk
This is one of those songs that I feel so lucky that I know about it, and feel badly for all those who don't

Thanx you Nirvana for makes us know this piece of musical art......Zanxxs U Nerrvanaaaa.....:) :)
As dope shooting music as it gets. Nirvana were amateurs except grohl. Andy wood especially, Chris Cornell, Staley, several Seattle singers and bands were far more talented. Most of nirvanas most sold songs were leadbelly or meat puppets songs.
whoa, so some of my favorite nirvana songs aren’t even really nirvana songs? :/
Man oh man how I just love this song.
the end of this song tho….
Now this was a GREAT band!♥️
dog time
Nice Nirvana cover!
This really satisfies my Kurtty Kurt Curt Desire for musical enjoyment! Thanks Curt and Kurt!
Ahhh. Very nice.
It's never polite to be curt
01:43 - I still remember the first time I heard that outro. I had just smoked some grass and bought this album on vinyl after hearing Kurt cover their songs.
It was, the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. It’s like a mixture of fuzz and distortion all swept into outer space. I had never heard sound like that before.
That was around the 10th grade. 7 years later and it brings back distant but so so beautiful memories. I can recall everything about that day, cause after I heard this song, I was a changed man.
wew how many of their songs did nirvana cover?
Y‘all need to check out their live versions; holly sh.. are they fantastic 🙀👏🏻
I followed your advice and God you're so right.
Wow i just discovered these guys, they are great writers, i think i found my new fav band
Thanks to Kurt I know Curt and his band. This song is fantastic. Let's hit that replay button again...
Not Nirvana. LOL. Really? Thanks.
epic ending
Kurt would've been a great lead singer for Puppets' lyrics...
Always thought this band was like a country band on acid... kind of awesome..
Does anyone else think the lyrics are really good "nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop and an illustrated book about birds"

Who needs action when you got *Druuugs*
Why this song isn't in Spotify?
This song is awesome and profound. I listen to it and I feel like I know exactly what he’s talking about, although it’s hard to explain. The song gets to the core of life in the realm of samsara
Kurt brought me here
Una de las razones por las que amo tanto Nirvana es que puso está música genial de nuevo en escena,a pesar de los piojosos de las compañías
What a great song. By both bands but sorry lol Nirvana made it even better.
That outro goes perfect with the lake of fire painting. Should've been swirling around when the outro came in.
Wow this is a shitty song when Nirvana isn't covering it.
I prefer Nirvana's cover of these songs. I didn't really listen to Nirvana until 2017, well after high school.
I think I see why Kurt liked these dudes. My first listen was like "Oh fuck that is so off" but by the middle of "Oh me" it was good. So much is rough and raw.
Not a fan of the meat puppets version of Lake of Fire but I can see the appeal.
Dude, Nirvanas version is a billion times better wow
i like this better
как же вы все задолбали Нирваной.
First time I heard this, I was in iraq. That was over 12 years ago. This song is still one of my absolute faves. Helped me find other good jams, and helped me through some shitty times.
I love this Nirvana cover.
Now go check out LeadBelly, kids
Heard this on Jersey City's WFMU on Clay Pigeon's Wake and Bake morning show. Made my morning that day. He's the man. Always shizamming his songs. Of course loved this song from Nirvana unplugged too
people talking only about Nirvana in comments... i'm very thankful that Kurt covered this, and now Meat Puppets II are one of my favourite albums of all time... grunge was so epic! Meat Puppets and Nirvana forever!!!
...love the bass-tone on this song!
Outro is almost exactly the same on both records. One is just played on an electric with heavy distortion and effects.
Can't believe it's taken me this long to hear the original version.......haunting
"I'm THING ONE....that's THING TWO" :D
i dont like this version..dont like his voice
I love Curt's voice it fits perfectly with their music.
this is cool, well mr cobain u have good taste in music
Wow..nice not bad than nirvan,s cover
The end solo makes my heart ache in such a beautiful way
This is a great song.
Such brilliant lyrics. Much of what we do is out of the denial of the nothingness. We fill it with all sorts of material tings, but it doesn't change the inherent nature of existence. It's ok though. Those experiences make up our lives and that's why we are here: to share experiences with each other and to have lived and died rather than never have lived at all.
Nirvana sucks dick
Love the meat puppets
Nirvana murdered this song 100x over Kurt vocals omfg
İs that a fuckin horrible wendigo on screen?
The outro is such a banger.
This song is awesome. I love my life bruh
Mexico college station would play this..... original version ,man I thought I was a rocker.....heard all this old school meat puppets ...they were almost to play Laredo TX but fell through.....our loss........ Patrick
Play at 0.25x speed
Chris Cornell brought me here
Who needs high jackson when u got words
cant stop thinking about this fucking song, for some reason its so haunting
It's a great little piece of abstract story telling with an awesome melody, that's why.
@Scooter Abstract storytelling is a good way to describe it. I try to grasp the meaning behind the song but fail everytime. The greenland and mexico bit throws me off so much
I must admit Nirvana made me check this out...fuckin great song!!!!!!!!!!
This was an amazing live band, they delivered the goods. Great song.
Is there any actual meat puppets fans here
Meat puppets > nirvana's version
The Meat Puppets wrote and recorded it, but as so often happened, Nirvana made it their own song by recording it live and making it popular, like Bowie's Man Who Sold the World
Shit yeah, this is fucking amazingly good.
👍
This song is out of everybody’s vocal range
Fodaa...
I love Nirvana but this is 100 TIMES BETTER than the Nirvana version
Nirvana

If you don't get why Kurt Cobain played this song from his heart, you need to listen again and again and agai......
1:37 Sublime Go!!!!!!!!!
Good taste
I love how he cant sing well at all (in the traditional sense). That adds so much charm imo
1:43 Beautiful
1:43 Amazing
i love ittt honestly better than nirvana in my opinion 😂i just like how it sounds weird and gives me a weird feeling 😂
Isnt Curt in the dean ween group now?!
Exercise man!
Nirvana did a cover of this song, they never claimed it as their own. They said that it was by the Meat Puppets, on their album, "Unplugged in New York."
Better than Nirvana version .
I recently came across a book which instantly made me think of this song. It's called "A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia" by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. I wonder if it had any influence, since it was first published in 1980?
Better version
