McLachlan, Sarah - Blue Lyrics
Blue, songs are like tattoos
You know I've been to sea betore
Crown and anchor me
Or let me sail away
Blue, here is a song for you
Underneath the skin
An empty space to fill in
Well there're so many sinking now
You've got to keep thinking
You can make it thru these waves
Acid, booze, and ass
Needles, guns, and grass
Lots of laughs, lots of laughs
Well everybody's saying that hell's the hippest way to go
Well I don't think so
Blue, I love you.
Blue, here is a shell for you
Inside you'll hear a sigh
A foggy lullaby
There is your song from me.

McLachlan, Sarah Blue Comments
The lyrics are clever and beautiful.
Everyone will think this is bonkers insane, but a death/thrash/punk-metal group could cover this song and with the right pacing and lyricless chug to lyric ratio...this could be a good punk/metal/deathcore song. "Acid booze ass, needles guns and gas" "Songs are like tattoos" Come on. Lemmy could have done a version of this with Motorhead.
Grass not gas.
Joni's daughter.
Love this!
Finally I find the cover, thank you so much for uploading!!! On the U.S. version of FTE, “Blue” is a 4+ minute track consisting of 30 seconds of silence, an outtake from “Ice,” and a piano/acoustic version of “Possession”.
This is crazy, but it's way better than the original.
It's way more produced than the original. Hardly better. Just over worked.
+hueseph Joni Mitchell is unlistenable. The production is not only superior here, but the arrangement is better, and Sarah is a better singer. All of that makes this version far more interesting, and overall better.
LOL! Opinions. How old are you? Right. You probably weren't even born when the original came out. I wonder how Sarah feels about the original. I can imagine she, like a multitude of other artists, only have the highest regard for Joni. The fact that it took a production crew of probably ten people to recreate and make this "better" than the original speaks volumes. Some people are just so addicted to the candy coated pop on the radio that they don't know what "good" is. Certainly Mrs. McLaughlin must have thought enough of this song to want to cover it. Her and many other artists who try to recreate the magic of a Joni Mitchell tune. I'm not a die hard Joni fan even. She has one album that I like. All the rest escape me. But, Blue? Blue is a masterpiece. The whole album. One artist. A couple of mics. Maybe one or two other musicians as backup. Very likely recorded live off the floor. Virtually zero effects used(maybe some eq and compression). Just a good clean signal on a vintage console to tape. There is a production standard there that is lost on a lot of new music. But, I can't force you to hear what I hear. it took me years to appreciate it. Had to get the fluff of popular radio out of my ears.
+hueseph I hate modern pop music, but no, being 34 means I was not born when the original was out. I respect Mitchell as an artist, and for her contributions, but her voice is intolerable.
I tend to prefer covers of Joni Mitchell than the original because I don't like the sound of her voice as much in her first few albums. She was a better poet than performer for awhile.
In my Joni playlist with the original version. Thanks for the upload!
this isn't on fumbling towards Ecstasy
It's on the UK and Japan releases of the album as a bonus track. And also on a rarities album. Originally done for a Joni-tribute album, I think.

"Dig" episode 3 brought me here
She really did Joni justice with this. I like both Joni's and Sarah's versions. Their voices are surprisingly similar in some ways. Smooth, expressive, deep, and mourning.
Sarah sang this at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, when Joni received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award in 1996. Sarah sat mid stage, the curtains drawn back only far enough to highlight her sitting at a baby grand, bathed in blue light. At the end of her performance, Joni stood applauding and said "this song now belongs to you."
Quite a tribute I would say.
Wow! no wonder I stated blubbering.
I used to listen to this as a young kid, when my parents would play it on the cassettes.... it brings tears to my eyes as I listen to it now. This song is so beautiful, and reminds me of my childhood, I can't help but cry.
SUCH a better voice than Joni by a 1000 miles! I can't stand Joni (usually). Sarah is incredible!
V. Stan Leisenring don't insult Joni you idiotic troll
Every bit as amazing as Joni's own version, and I say that as a huge Joni fan.
I agree completly. I'm a HUGE Joni fan too, and to me this is the best cover of Blue so far.
It is on "Sarah Mclachlan, Rarities, B-Sides & Other Stuff" Picture of a Bee on the cover (at least the cd that I have)
Blue, songs are like tattoos
You know I've been to sea before
Crown and anchor me
Or let me sail away
Hey Blue, here is a song for you
Ink on a pin
Underneath the skin
An empty space to fill in
Well there're so many sinking
You've got to keep thinking
We can make it through these waves
Acid, booze, and ass
Needles, guns, and grass
Lots of laughs
Lots of laughs
Everybody's saying that hell's the hippest way to go
Well I don't think so
But I'm gonna take a look around at the blues
I love you
Blue, here is a shell for you
Inside you'll hear a sigh
A foggy lullaby
Here is your song from me
It's not on all versions of it, though. The iTunes version doesn't have this song, sadly. :( The Joni Mitchell tribute album that Sarah has a song on doesn't have it either. The Legacy Edition of FTE has a song titled Blue, although it's really just a piano version of Possession.
I'm so grateful that I bought the CD that has this version on......
Ms Bee, I am too. I looked everywhere for it. It’s a very good album.
good version, not Joni, but creative nevertheless.
Beautiful voice, but don;t particularly like the overall ... it s missing something, the feeling... Much prefer the original, it is sensational
this is the most amazing thing i've ever heard
Yeeee Mac Dre Thizz
THIZZNATION RIP MAC DRE !!!
It is on the UK version of the album too :)
Rip Mac Dre!!!!!!
@attempt198 I have it on Sarah McLachlan's Rarities, B-Sides & Other Stuff album.
@SkyMoon650
R.I.P :'(
I know this is funny, but it is also on a "cassette single" along with the song Good Enough, that I have in my stash!! ;) both are really beautiful...
@attempt198 - It is on the "Rarities B Sides & other stuff" CD. =)
@aldisgoe thanks for your kindness
@llamaL0v3
yawn..
She does a good job with this song. No doubt that it is extremely beautiful, but because of this song's fragility, she lost the meaning and emotion with the harmonies and other added things. this song should strictly be kept organic because of the raw raw emotion that this song represents.
I honestly agree with you.
But its in sarah's style
For some reason, this song once in a while randomly pops in my head and I have to go listen to it. I've been a fan of hers & collecting many of her CDs and even the B-sides album this is from, since 97' (13 years old ) She was definitely a profound impact since the beginning of my pre-teen years and onward. She even gave me the courage to get a pixie haircut! Her voice is eerie & incredible in so many ways...
@attempt198 I think it's also on Rarities, B-Sides, and Other Stuff
I have fallen in love with Fumbling, and it's nice to hear another song from that era of Sarah McLachlan's career. I love her earlier musical style. This stuff is like sweet honey on a depressing day. Perfect.
thank you havent heard this in an age
As my daughter would say . . . "nailed it!"
@attempt198 It appears on the album "A Tribute to Joni Mitchell" released by Nonesuch Records in 2007. It is the standout track on the album, in my opinion : )
I've never heard anyone do this and sound so much like Joni. Beautiful cover.
@gabs1118 Thanks gabs.
@attempt198 You can find it on her Rarities and B-Sides album as well.
@WhipsyDK originally a joni song.............hey 4 joni !
MAC DRE!!!!!!!!!!!!
@BookLoverforLife frostwire's better then limewire.
@LiveAndLoveLife Actually, I have the original recording of Joni Mitchell's Blue on vinyl. In the album's liner notes it is clearly stated, "Well everybody's saying that hell's the hippest way to go Well I don't think so But I'm gonna take a look around it though". So, not only are the lyrics correctly typed there, but aside from that, "hippest" just makes so much more sense than "hippies". Know what I mean?
A good cover, but I still can't love anything as much as I love Joni Mitchell's original version. She's just unmatchable.
Mac dre Sampled this and Hiss IS FUcking DOPE! There is A song for You- Mac dre
An absolutely amazing cover
LOA : lots of ass...
The song and album by Joni is a standard in our home, when my wife wakes uo tomarrow, I can't wait for her to hear this superb version...truly a Sarah freak now!!

I like Sarah's take on it.
But somehow I just... I dunno, I love the desperation in Joni's.
Either way, remains an amazing song :).
ebay sometimes has rare stuff like imports and such. I had been looking for a song for like, three years, checked ebay and got it no problem.
Good luck :).
incredible, i am in love with her now.

Is this a joke? She can't hold a candle to JM.

Never heard this song so thanks for posting. I do know that it's not on Fumbling, anyone know where it's from?
