McCall, C. W. - Audubon Lyrics

Well, I was born in a town called Audubon
Southwest Iowa, right where it oughta been
Twenty-three houses, fourteen saloons
And a feed mill in nineteen-thirty
Had a neon sign, said "Squealer Feeds"
And the bus came through when they felt the need
And they stopped at a place there in town called The Old Home Cafe

Now my daddy was a music lovin' man
He stood six-foot-seven, had big ol' hands
He'd lost two fingers in a chainsaw but he could still play the violin
And Mom played piana, just the keys in the middle
And Dad played a storm on his three-fingered fiddle
'Cause that's all there was to do back there folks, except ta go downtown and watch haircuts

So I was raised on Dust Bowl tunes, you see
Had a six-tube radio an' no TV
It was so dog-goned hot I had to wet the bed in the summer just to keep cool
Yeah, many's a night I'd lay awake
A-waitin' for a distant station break
Just a-settin' and a-wettin' an' a-lettin' that radio fry

Well, I listened to Nashville and Tulsa and Dallas
And Oklahoma City gave my ear a callus
And I'll never forget them announcers at three A.M.
They'd come on an' say "Friends, there's many a soul who needs us
"So send them letters an' cards ta Jesus
"That's J-E-S-U-S friends, in care a' Del Rio, Texas"

But the place I remember, on the edge a' town
Was the place where you really got the hard-core sound
Yeah, a place where the truckers used ta stop on their way to Dees Moins
There was signs all over them windowsills
Like "If the Devil don't get ya, then Roosevelt will"
And "The bank don't sell no beer, and we don't cash no checks"

Now them truckers never talked about nothin' but haulin'
And the four-letter words was really appallin'
They thought them home-town gals was nothin' but toys for their amusement
Rode Chevys and Macks and big ol' stacks
They's always complainin' 'bout their livers an' backs
But they was fast-livin', strung-out, truck-drivin' son of a guns

Now the gal waitin' tables was really classy
Had a rebuilt motor on a fairly new chassis
And she knew how to handle them truckers; name was Mavis Davis
Yeah, she'd pour 'em a coffee, then she'd bat her eyes
Then she'd listen to 'em tell 'er some big fat lies
Then she'd ask 'em how the wife and kids was, back there in Joplin?

Now Mavis had all of her ducks in a row
Weighed ninety-eight pounds; put on quite a show
Remind ya of a couple a' Cub Scouts tryin' ta set up a Sears, Roebuck pup tent
There's no proposition that she couldn't handle
Next ta her, nothin' could hold a candle
Not a hell of a lot upstairs, but from there on down, Disneyland

Now the truckers, on the other hand, was really crass
They remind ya of fingernails a-scratchin' on glass
A-stompin' on in, leavin' tracks all over the Montgomery Ward linoleum
Yeah, they'd pound them counters and kick them stools
They's always pickin' fights with the local fools
But one look at Mavis, and they'd turn into a bunch a' tomcats

Well, I'll never forget them days gone by
I's just a kid, 'bout four foot high
But I never forgot that lesson an' pickin' and singin', the country way
Yeah, them walkin', talkin' truck stop blues
Came back ta life in seventy-two
As "The Old Home Filler-up An' Keep On A-Truckin' Cafe"

Oh, the Old Home Filler-up An' Keep On A-Truckin'
Oh, the Old Home Filler-up An' Keep On A-Truckin'
Oh, the Old Home Filler-up An' Keep On A-Truckin' Cafe
Oh, the Old Home Filler-up An' Keep On A-Truckin'
Oh, the Old Home Filler-up An' Keep On A-Truckin'
Oh, the Old Home Filler-up An' Keep On A-Truckin' Cafe

    M.... B....

@Mickey Bowser Good that you had time to read all that I typed to you Mickey. I was just so worried by your story, I was trying to think of what your best options could be to take care of that bad incident you had. I did hide your story and get it off here so the whole world and total strangers can't see it because it was just between you and me. And you say that Logan may go to court, but I hope you don't have to be dragged into all of that too much because courts are stressful and no fun but it may make you feel relieved and strong and brave if you have to at least make sure things are understood somehow to someone important. And thanks for sharing with me of your younger years, because I have been wondering if you had ever had a relationship before, but I didn't want to be too nosey into your past. But it is kinda good that you have some experience with that one man you mentioned. But just remember you only saw him for a month and that is not a very long relationship and it is very good that even though you were just 18, you were still smart enough to know he just wanted to make himself look good and make himself look like he was a powerful guy who could have the best looking girl in town. And even though you were young you knew you wanted to end that relationship pretty quickly after that month. But do not let that have any effect all these years later. That was when you were just a teenager. I think that actually honestly from what I can tell you do not hate being pretty. I think that deep down you actually truly like yourself more than you think and you love your long red uncontrollable hair and you like that you have those eyes of yours and your nice skin. I know this because you've told me of these things in a way that makes it sound like you actually like that you just happen to be a beautiful girl. You know you do! Smiling, dancing in the rain, walking freely in the woods. So, I guess you like being pretty to yourself, but you just are kinda a bit shy and you just have trouble dealing with everyone else thinking your so pretty. But I do think that maybe sometimes they are seeing more than just your good looks. I do not know how often you go out on the town these days or how often you see people or random men around in your town. But I think if you happened to stumble upon a guy at a store or just out of total luck somewhere i town, that maybe sometimes they only see your good looks, but sometimes I bet they can tell what's behind your smile, and they can just tell that you're a real sweet friendly unique girl. And that man Morgan just gave you a bad impression of men, that's all. I think you can easily forget all about him, because that was 8 years ago and you only saw him for a few weeks. Was he older than you? Was a he sorta a tough guy? you say he made you fear honesty in men and he scared you too much. Sounds like you might need a guy just a bit older than you, just so he has some good life experience and smarts, and has a good job lined up maybe. And I think that if you ever did get a chance to test out a man, where you choose him and have some control, and You ask him for coffee at the coffeeshop, that you can just try to just talk about normal stuff, and nothing too important at all, just to sorta figure out if you like the guy, and kinda get a feeling about whether he is a honest person or not. Because I have a feeling you are the type that will want to start off really slow with the relationship if you find that guy one of these day's, or if you test out a few guy's and find one you want coffee with a few times and then a walk in the park, and you yourself can be honest with him after you've seen him a few times and let him know of your innocence and how you prefer to go slow and not rush things. Because so so very very men you will find these days now that it's 2019 too many men will want to go to bed with you sooner then I bet you will want to, so just be honest with them about that if you see them more than once. And like I said before, you can use your beauty, where you have a lot of control over things, you just gotta be strong and make decisions about things when you need to. And you're smart Mickey, if you get around to testing out any men slowly with simple conversations and seeing how they are, I think you are smart enough to tell whether you feel they are honest and not scary and if you end up going for more than one coffee at a diner or coffeeshop, pretty soon you'll be able to tell whether they are controlling and whether they are a decent man or just in it for your looks . You're smart and you'll be able to catch on whether they are seeing the wonderful girl and great personality that is inside that smile and long red hair. And you'll be brave and say Yes or No to going out again. That's not a relationship yet. That's simply dating. But if you try it some, you might just get lucky and find him. Could be a few months from now, could be a year, but don't be afraid to try it. It might really help get rid of a lot of your stress you have about men and you might just enjoy chatting with someone over coffee, whether it turns into anything or not. Anyway, I'm typing too much. hahahahaha glad you enjoy reading what I type, and I always enjoy hearing from you also, and i am so so happy when you enjoy the good songs that I post on here.

I was born in 1965 and my Grandpa had this album and he turned me onto one of Amerixas greatest storytellers, the much talented, C.W. MCALL.
Grandad taught me a lot of things and I appreciate all of them but clueing me onto one of America's BEST storytellers, well sir, that one fills my speakers EVERY MORNING loudly for all the listening world to enjoy!
I was richly blessed to have LEARNED to appreciate such wordsmithing. They don't make em like BILL FRIES anymore.
    I loved those albums
The current knuckleheads of today could learn a few important lessons about speaking your story. Someone once told me that CW MCALL rapped. I punched him squarely and forcefully in the nose and promptly broke it. I felt bad at the time and I reckon I still do fer breaking that dudes nose but thems are fighting words.
I did a few nights in jail for that little stunt but BY GOLLY I'd do it again today! Thanks for posting all these great songs.
