@Luis Enrique Perez You're delusional if you think you know how radio play works nowadays. And I'm writing this for people who are actually interested in how the industry turned on its head. So don't complain that you have to read stuff. BBC1 actually axed Robbie Williams from their play lists several years ago. Their sole reason pretty much being that he was turning 40. Matt's self-written winners album went to #2 double platinum within a couple weeks. After he parted with the SyCo label he put out 2 indie albums off his own back that went #1 and #2 in the indie charts and still Top10 in general.

@Luis Enrique Perez Also: Since then everything went downhill. Charts have been eviscerated by allowing streaming services to count instead of only hard sales. That means, from now on, you'll never ever make it in unless you're already a classic or hyped into high hell by massive, mostly non-music related, promo stunts. No-one will actually BUY your music, and your label will complain endlessly about it, yet their only answer is more hype. The only thing that will make a musician real money at this point are understated live shows. Nobody can "steal" those. Plus, Matt had actually more national sales than one direction. They're not even a blip on the radar in the poll that was done in 2015. In a Top150 SALES chart "successful" 1D came in at #95 and Matt was #1 in Ireland and #24 in the UK.

I was recently perusing YOUTUBE for some of my favorite songs when I stumbled upon Matt's version and I simply can't get enough of it!!! I've lost count of how many times I've played it over and over. I didn't need the judges comments to convince me how GREAT this performance was - IT WAS BRILLIANT!!! Everyone has a right to their own opinion, but I can't help but feel the critics of his performance may simply be jealous they don't have the talent to blow away a LIVE audience the way Matt did.

Welcome to the club. Years ago, all I wanted to find was Johnny Mathis' version of this song and got blindsided by another clip of this very performance LOL. It was mislabeled and didn't say anything about xfactor... or I would have not clicked it. I don't watch any of these talent shows bc I found most of the links I've seen shared on the net always were more than disappointing garble. But then this guy started to sing and I knew in an instant that this was no karaoke whatsoever. And now I'm stuck with it. No, I'm not complaining ;-)

Why isn't he a super-star?  We get stuck with the likes of Kanye and Justin Beiber…..

Because he focuses solely on his music, and even purposefully avoids being dragged down the promo stunt fame route. He cut the contract with SyCo when they barred him from having a say in production of his winner's album, and then even overriding Columbia, ditching his already agreed upon first single. Instead they had him do a Gary Barlow song as a pure x factor promo stunt. He also repeatedly turned down offers from "celebrity" and "big brother" and other stupid shows that have nothing to do with music.

As a singer/songwriter/actor he's busy enough. Just last weekend he finished a stunning run as Pilate on WestEnd's Jesus Christ Superstar to 5 star reviews. That's the kind of press you want as a musician. Not the vacuous bland gossip shit.

I am a rocker and love metal etc , but I grew up in the 60's and 70's and heard this song on the radio a lot back then . I had not heard it in many years and this guy did an incredible job on it . It makes me sick to read the snotty experts critique him so rudely , before you open your mouth , lets see the link of YOU singing it better ! or , do all of us , who liked it , a favor , and SHUT MOUTH !

Thank god, they left his voice completely free of autotune. In mid-2012 he had already started self-producing again, just like before with his bands. XF tho pretty much erased their best and most decisive winner (#2 in week 1, #1 each and every week after that) from their history. They can f off and die, for all I care LOL

@Julia68yt sounds like the record business has not changed any . I saw a documentary on some really shady stuff that was done to get air time here in the U.S. , It was very ugly , and down right scary if you did not follow along . I cant imagine what the artists go through when they think they made it to their dream and some vultures and wolves have their careers tied up with red tape . I guess that's part of the game of getting famous , ....... dealing with more powerful scumbags behind the scenes than ever . They may have disliked some of the club / pub owners but now they realize some of them were not so bad in comparison . I like what he does with covers and I would love to hear him cover more great songs from current stuff like sick puppies , and semi older like , The Goo Goo Dolls , and also back in the day stuff like Carly Simon , Eric Carman , The Bee Gees etc etc . . I bet he would kill some of carly simon's songs ! If you know him by chance , ask him if he would do some more covers , I would buy a cd of just covers even . The fact that he is this good live is even a better testament to his talent !

@ted evans I met him on a tour meet&greet but I don't "know" him LOL. He gets more than enough suggestions, tho, which covers would be worth doing. He's always expanding his repertoire bit by bit. But I guess he'll never do a cover album since he has so many own songs backed up he just doesn't have the time to record it all. The only solution is to rip the audio off of yt clips and put them on a playlist or burn them on a CD. Instant cover album ;-)

I shouldn't have come here, because there's such an overwhelming support of a guy who just shit all over a stunningly beautiful song. If you think pros are just critical assholes, and it's better to be ignorant, then you're missing something important here. This song's simplicity and beauty stand alone. This isn't a tool that you can throw gimmicks on to dupe ignorant people into a massive applause - it's sacred. Watch Roberta Flack perform this live, and if you don't see the difference, don't be one of those ignorant fucking assholes contributing your thoughts on music. Aside from his bullshit vocal masturbation, he goes into a range he can't handle. It was painful to listen to. This should honestly be a crime. He should get a misdemeanor at least for desecrating a classic. It's like Kenny G dubbing his horse shit over Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." They should both serve time and be put on probation, after publicly apologizing. I don't know why this pisses me off so much, but seeing the level of ignorance in the comments just bottomed out my faith in humanity unexpectedly. b) you riffed on the _mention_ of the word "education" itself but still haven't said which education (content-wise) you expect
c) contestants have almost zero to none control over what is put on as a backing track.
d) It's his "goto" subset within his range. He's been using it prior and keeps using it.
e) Explain how and why your idealistic highly educated music mind didn't catch on to the fact that he had to do this without proper monitors
f) His "shortcomings" got him a full-blown debut lead role at the Westend, and actual pros picked him by merit of his vocal range and strength alone

Andy Holtz - your opinion. Doesn't change how I felt when I first heard this. To me this version is sublime. And Roberta Flack's version is sublime. But also so is Peter Paul and Mary's version. I just love this heavenly song. Why get all worked up? There are real problems in this world that could use your passion.

@Linnaeus Well said, and I respect your feedback. I guess the reason I got so worked up was 1. I was in a dark head space, and 2. I'm have an idealistic look at how great the world could be if only... My idea is that all people would benefit from the challenge of evaluating their level of awareness, understanding their motivations, and approaching their actions with conscious intent. Why do I do what I do? What exactly am I doing, and how can I improve it? What is going on around me, and can I find lessons from it?



The song bothered me, yes, but it was people talking about how it's better to be ignorant and enjoy this version than to be educated. This kind of approach leads to a lot of problems in the world. If you look at the suffering, and sometimes even bloodshed that comes from people who intentionally close their minds to protect the status quo in their life, it becomes clear just how important it is to keep evaluating circumstances in an effort to be fluid and growing in a positive direction. Sorry, I could go on for days. I once wrote an essay called The Art Mentality, which took about 72 hours to write, sleeping only about 2 hours each night. It was only 3 pages, but the wording meant everything. I just wrote it for myself, too. Maybe that'll help you understand why I flipped out, haha. Sorry to bash a song you like. I agree; of all the problems in the world, this doesn't even make the list.
