Mathis, Johnny - The Folks Who Live On The Hill Lyrics

Many men with lofty aims strive for lofty goals.
Others play at smaller games, being simpler souls.
I am of the latter brand. All I want to do
Is to find a spot of land and live there with you.

Someday we'll build a home
On a hilltop high, you and I,
Shiny and new, a cottage that two can fill.
And we'll be pleased to be called
"The folks who live on the hill."

Someday we may be adding
A thing or two, a wing or two.
We will make changes as any family will.
But we will always be called
"The folks who live on the hill."

Our veranda will command a view of meadows green,
The sort of view that seems to want to be seen.
And when the kids grow up and leave us,
We'll sit and look at the same old view, just we two.

Darby and Joan who, used to be Jack and Jill,
The folks like to be called
What they have always been called,
"The folks who live on the hill."

Mathis, Johnny The Folks Who Live On The Hill Comments
  1. A.... ....

I woke up this morning dreaming this song, which I haven't thought of for years. Had to hear it.
XLNT start for the day. Now, coffee.

  2. N.... G....

This is the third version of this song that I've listened to...and still can't find one I like... I like his voice and least he's not whispering it or shouting one minute then barely making a sounds the next...but still...#nope

  3. L.... P....

Looked for 40 years for this cut from his, long time gone, 14th LP. Probably wore out 3 copies of the album, when it was still available. Also had the instrumental cut from George Shearing "Black Satin" LP. The greatest gift Steve Jobs gave was "iTunes" .... 99% of the songs that I so treasured in my pseudo adulthood was found, safe and secure and now lives in my iTunes library. Thank You Johnny Mathis, George Shearing and Steve Jobs from a very pleased old woman.

  4. t.... ....

Effeminate voice. Bland style. Nothing to fire the imagination. Rest in peace, Johnny.

    t.... ....

    You must be tone deaf

    t.... ....

I'll excuse your ignorance because besides the fact that this is beautifully sung and the notes he reaches and sustains are remarkable, you haven't listened to the man's overall career arc.
I'm going to wager you must be a millennial keyboard user particularly judging by your words of choice. If not you still don't have an ear for music.
Mathis evolved from this perfection into an even more well rounded and richer vocalist later in his career and covered a wide genre of musical tastes.
I'm curious to know what you find to be a good vocalist. Just curious.

  5. A.... G....

A few comments note that he nearly always sings the verse to a song. This is how it should be, the songwriter wrote the verse for a reason. This is a wonderful song and J M sings it with sublime artistry.

  6. E.... L....

Is the last chapter going to be? How many years? Last Celebration of life? Last and
    greatest.

  7. V.... A....

Johnny just can flat out sing, hitting those high a's over c's, it doesn't get much better than this.

  8. G.... K....

    Sighs upon sighs❣

  21. h.... ....

As a young man I had a friend whose sister played Johnny all the time I was in his home. didnt take long to really like his singing and I have ever since then. that was back in the early 60's, 60-61 but I've never tired of listening to that voice.

  22. D.... T....

Thanks so much for this outstanding tune.I use to catch him at the Forest Hills tennis stadium;an outdoor venue with full orchestration. The voice and the music turned the evening into pure enchantment.

  23. B.... ....

The truth is that he has been adopted into another family--the Music Family. This is difficult for a non-Musician to understand, but Music is all-consuming, easily a 24-hour job, and tends to blot out everything else, especially when one has been born with such extraordinary Talent.

  24. r.... ....

My wife and I lost the Lp but have kept this classic rendition in mind for long - and how rewarding to have found it, thanks to you.

  25. R.... S....

  30. E.... W....

    Romantically nostalgic. Ted Wilcock

  31. a.... ....

  33. R.... Z....

    I'm sorry it never happened.

  34. t.... ....

great old song absolutely marvellous version

  35. W.... F....

I love the way johnny is able to bring every to it's peak.

  36. M.... ....

    Great song! Great voice!

  37. L.... N....

I have something to tell you he is my cousin and he probably doesn't even know I'm alive.Because he forgot about my whole family he probably doesn't know his great grandma died last year.Just because he forgot about us.This is the truth and he sings beautiful but who forgets about your family. This is nothing but the truth!!!!!

  38. t.... ....

I was born in "54 and Johnny's voice was always somewhere around me as a little boy. To me, his voice and music are like some magical place in time. Back in the day this tune was recorded.... music was at it's very finest. You just had to know how and you had to be really good. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it was, still, like that today. So, that we can be reminded of a quality time in music, thank God for the magnetic tape!

  39. M.... A....

The voice, the music, nothing short of the days of real music that made you grow and learn, (not fall) in love. Ethereal is the voice and the orchestrations. Bravo Johnny!

  41. D.... M....

What a wisful song! I've loved it for years. Many people have sung it - from Irene Dunne to Bette Midler. But few make me more nostalgic than Johnny's version.

  42. M.... W....

A classic rendition of such a romantic old song - reliving the 50s. In comparison today is so full of hard faced materialistic wannabes who celebrate their ignorance and still can't find true happiness.

  43. T.... ....

! always appreciated the way that Johnny's recordings of well known standards almost always included the original intros. Many singers just begin with the main song, One of the purist voices in the business.

  44. d.... ....

As one who has followed Johnny Mathis' career from the very beginning, I totally agree with your opinion that this album is his best. And to top it off, you've posted the BEST song on the album. I also have the original LP and have been playing it for the past 50 years.

A fantasy dream for "Darby and Joan" that filled the heads of so many young lovers so very long ago. Reality is another thing, but the dream remains lovely.
