Oh man, this makes it a completely different song. Instead of a fun pop song about a guy lusting after his best friend's girl, it's a sad and heartfelt ballad about a young lesbian who doesn't know if she'll ever find someone like her best friend's girl. Wow. Great cover. I'm a straight guy, so I can't identity directly. But we all know the feeling of seeing someone else and wondering if we'll ever have love like that. This really made me feel things.

This makes me think about the first time I had feelings for a girl. She was straight and homophobic towards queer women. Not guys though. I got forced out of the closet to my parents because of it, and I've always resented that I wasn't able to tell them when I was ready. I've had to pretend I was straight ever since to my parents and say it never happened. I'm open with literally everyone else except them because it scared me to be forced out like that.

This song seriously makes me cry so hard because it was me and my mom's favorite song when I was a kid, but when I came out to her, she flipped out. I could never listen to this song because it reminded me of my mom... but to hear an LGBT version... It makes cry because for the first time, I feel normal. My mom has called me horrible things and done horrible things to me. But one of the most terrible things she's said to me, is that I wasn't normal.

I can now listen to my favorite song, and not feel like I can't relate to it.

this is how NOT to do a cover. the "let's turn it into a piano ballad so that'll make it deeper" mindset is obnoxious enough but this takes it to excruciating extremes. Jesse's Girl is a light hearted song about teen jealousy. Therefore you sing it in a catchy and upbeat way. turning something into a piano ballad doesn't suit it at all. it's boring and dry and depressing and not fun at all.
