Marty Robbins - The Chair Lyrics

All night long , I tried, but couldn't sleep
Tried to be a man, tried not to weep
Now, I hear the turning of the key
Silently, the guard motions to me

Now, I realize the end is near
And I find I can't control my fear
As I pass the guard, I start to cry
And I whisper, " I don't want to die"

Then, from Death Row comes a whisper
"Charlie, be a man"
Then, I scream, "Just wait 'til your turn
Then, see if you can"

Down the hall, they push and carry me
Blind with fright and tears won't let me see
Through a door and then, I stop and stare
'Cause I see it, there it is, the chair

Then, they strap me in and turn to leave
And the Prison Chaplain says, "Believe
Faith in God will cause Him to forgive"
I have faith, but still, I wanna live

Suddenly, I'm paralized
This must be the end
My body jerks and trembles
And they turn it on again

As quickly as it came, the pain is gone
I hear music. Someone sings a song
Suddenly, I seem to float through air
Something's wrong, 'cause I'm still in the chair

In the room, there's hardly any light
And I see the Doctor dressed in white
I hear every word that's plainly said
Did I hear him say, "This man is dead"

This was certainly the most unusual song by Marty. I asked him what
his reason for writing this song was. He said it was his idea what death was. Nevertheless a work for art with surprise ending

You can see the story as he sings it. I love how his stories tell of both good and bad guys and seems to make you understand how they each feel

  24. j.... s....

i tried to google this for the story as well. i hope the person who posted that he knew the story, will share it

  25. N.... B....

This song is freaking me out. ...... not sure how I feel about it.. do not have fear of dying I think at least. But appreciate somebody to put those feelings into words especially if you don't by your own hand .death penalty is a whole other subject..yes I believe there is . things you shouldn't d o.

  26. g.... ....

I suspect the reason so many of us never heard this until years after the fact is that it was too controversial to be played on many radio stations.

    g.... ....

    gdouglas999
I didn't know this song either. Just heard it a month ago or so. Now my radio station plays it all the time. Scary ,sad , strange at the same time.

  27. j.... s....

understand there is a story behind this song, can anyone share it? such a powerful song

    j.... s....

Is there a story behind this song? Been trying to Google it but couldn't find anything . Heard it first time a few months ago. Very sad and disturbing.

  28. S.... ....

    THIS SOUNDS LIKE JOHNNY CASH!!!

    S.... ....

Cash could not hold a light to Marty

    S.... ....

    B.... ....

If he repented for his sins, he most certainly did. It sounds like he did.

  34. M.... F....

    Fair to ok!

  35. S.... ....

No one thinks of how the innocent died to put him in this situation

    S.... ....

Sonny Marty didn't actually get out in death row to my knowledge, and as far as I'm aware, he's not actually a killer. Chill.

    S.... ....

British Traditionalist Its called a song everybody...Marty died of a heart attack..too soon

  36. H.... S....

For a while, this was being banned from being played...said to gruesome......strange idea for a song and no one could do it but Martin.......

  47. L.... F....

AMAZING!! Of all the songs of Marty Robbins I have listened to, I had NEVER heard this song--THE CHAIR!! He had the stunning ability of touching listeners' hearts and minds right to the core. Did the man die?? I'll leave that for you to ponder. In closing, do you believe in everlasting life?? God bless!!

    L.... F....

    never heard it till now

  48. d.... D....

Before this, I've believed I heard all of Marty Robbins songs. This is the first time I've seen this one  "The Chair"  .

    d.... D....

Me too . . . I grew up with LP's . . . Kids have no idea what I mean, but I'm sure you do. Each night (by NO means of course the only time they were on were on 🙂) the record player was put on with 6. I fell asleep to Marty Robbins, Tanya Tucker Jonny Horton, Bobbie Gentry, Jonny Cash . . . If you woke in the night and they were off you waited to hear the cuckoo clock ( those 1 chirps were infuriating 😂, 2330?, 0100?, 0330?, but if you couldnt fall back to sleep, pad the 20 feet from bed to the player in the living room, flip the stack and put back on . . . But this was a first for me . . .

  49. Z.... S....

Where did this one come from? What a terrific song, almost scary. What happens to this man, do the realize he is still alive, or is he?? It's the stuff of nightmares. Fantastic

    Z.... S....

@Zane Starr He is alive but Not in his Physical body because his Faith Saved him

    Z.... S....

  64. n.... ....

I like this one and Big Iron great singer all together though

  65. D.... A....

What if this was you? Think about it!!!!!!

  66. D.... A....

One 'Great' song by a 'Great' artist!!

  67. t.... ....

Was there anyone who could not only sing with stunning versatility, but also write such phenomenal songs as he did?
His record company could release several CD's of him just singing his own songs and the standard and quality of them would be just amazing. He was surely the most talented artist ever labelled as a country singer. He was without doubt one of the most gifted artists of all time. Shame he never really got the dues he deserved.

    t.... ....

Marty did some great covers, like Ribbon of Darkness, but I much, much prefer his own songs that he wrote. Pride and the Badge may be my favorite.

  68. P.... ....

    thanks for upload

  69. M.... B....

This is among the most haunting songs that chills you to the bone.

  70. C.... ....

Another fantastic song from the voice and pen of Marty Robbins. He was one of the greatest performes and songwriters in the history of the music industry. He may have passed at the young age of 57 in December of 1982, but his memory will live forever.

  71. D.... A....

Ther will never be another Marty, this is why!!!!!!!!!

  72. B.... N....

This is classic and haunting at the same time. What a voice we lost when he passed!

  73. T.... ....

Haven't heard this song in years, thanks for posting.

  74. D.... H....

...not a big hit for Marty....yet a great song and performance....!

  75. m.... ....

Man, I don't feel bad in saying that I cried when I first heard this song.

  76. f.... ....

@JDA97367 It is the vocal range in this song that makes it one of the best along with Feleena and mabe El paso

  77. x.... ....

    wait, he survived?

  78. x.... ....

That is the darkest song I've ever heard.

  79. D.... G....

Amazing song; never knew about it before. Thank you!

  80. J.... H....

  83. R.... P....

made me think of the movie "cool hand luke"

  84. S.... W....

Good song, but not scary for me.

  85. M.... H....

    Great lyrics!

  86. w.... ....

you ever see some one killed in you?

  87. t.... ....

    WOW This is scaaaaary

  88. j.... c....

This is what life is suppose to be about. Do it and you pay. Mr Robbins wasn' t taking a side to captical punishment. He was relaying how the man that did the crime was feeling. I' ll take your life but, oh please don' t take mine. Makes you think, doesn' t it?

  89. B.... ....

This is one of Marty's forgotten masterpieces that should be better known. How many country artists yesterday or today would write a song as chilling as this?

MY BODY JERKS AND TREMBLES AS THEY TURN IT ON AGAIN!!

  90. w.... ....

as you say grat job\. I think he is one of the best

  91. w.... ....

cool song i think its one if his best

  93. D.... D....

every time i hear this song, i shiver. so poignant and scary. a man about to be executed. facing his mortality.

  94. P.... ....

  95. e.... ....

A Forgotten Treasure by The Late, Great Marty Robbins.
Many, Many Thanks For Posting This Classic!!!

This song used to haunt me when I was a kid. I can't believe it... This is a very special find. I looked for it on Napster years ago... and could not find it. Thanks!
