Marty Robbins - Long, Long Ago Lyrics
Tell me the tales that to me were so dear
Long, long ago, long, long ago
Sing me the songs I delight in to hear
Long, long ago, long ago
Let me forget for how long you have grown
Let me believe that you love as you loved
Long, long ago, long ago
Do you remember the past where we met
Long, long ago, long, long ago
Ah yes, you told me you'd never forget
Long, long ago, long ago
Then, to all others, my smile you preferred
Still my heart treasures the praises I heard
Long, long ago, long ago

Marty Robbins Long, Long Ago Comments
😭😨
I love this song. The message is that nostalgia can make your life good and bring happiness to your future. If you feel lonely and wish for the past, and reminisce, that can make you a stronger and more hopeful person. It's like, "I can remember this moment for the past, and what I learned that I brought with me to the present can make me feel more motivated to move forward." Even so, it's fun to reminisce and bring back the good old times. This song is played at various places on the "Oregon Trail" game, both the first and second editions, and it tells me not to give up even if tired, or afraid because the easier or possibly better past can make you stronger and more resilient to the future. What you learned from reminiscing the past can help you achieve success.
Thanks for sharing this. It's a song I remember from childhood, long....
Would love to hear this magnificent talent singing MISSISSIPPI RIVER BLUES
A lovely song by a lovely singer- does anyone know where the pictures are taken to?
A true classic! Wonderful!
Just woderful can listen for hours
what a beautiful old English song..written by Thomas Haynes Bayly..in 1833
Heartfelt . Thank you so very much.
Wonderful
No one can sing this song like Marty. I still cherish the LP's of his western songs I bought in the 70's. My nephew heard a Marty Robbins song on the radio and immediately wanted to hear more so I lent him all my Marty LP's. Haven't got them back yet!
Dad used to sing this to me when I was little. He couldn't carry a tune in a syrup bucket, but it was still beautiful to me. What I would give to hear him sing it one more time.
The very first picture shows the stone bridge in Felton, Northumberland, England. I lived there for a time. Beautiful place.
Unbelievable Talent.
I FINALLY FOUND IT! AFTER 6 YEARS!
OMG OMG!
A favorite song---beautifully sung

My mother used to sing songs to my brothers and sisters and myself more than 70 years ago. This was one of the songs. Loved it then and still do.
If only we could go back to those times.
Same with my mother and us. Bless you and your family.
he has such a terrific voice love him xx
I was not even born when this song was out
Hi tarquin, I´m here once again, like so often - to listen to Marty just makes me happy. I hope it´s ok if I add the lyrics; on my div. pages where I share albums with the youtube links of Marty, I was asked to, so I thought maybe some people would like them here too.
Tell me the tales that to me were so dear
Long, long ago, long, long ago
Sing me the songs I delighted to hear
Long, long ago, long ago.
Now you are come all my fears are removed
Let me forget for how long you have roved
Let me believe that you love as you loved
Long, long ago, long ago.
Do you remember the path where we met
Long, long ago, long, long ago
Ah yes, you told me you´d never forget
Long, long ago, long ago.
Then to all others, my smile you preferred
Love, when you spoke, gave a charm to each word
Still my heart treasures the praises I heard
Long, long ago, long ago.
I cannot remember when I first learned this song. It must have been in grade school in the early 1950s when children were taught dozens of such songs along with Stephen Foster and songs of America. Marty caught my attention then too--but first as a pop singer of such songs as "A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation." Then he found his true musical home. Born and reared in Maricopa County, AZ, he wrote and sang not country but WESTERN songs. His album "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" with its hit single, "El Paso" made him famous. Millions of us were enthralled by his matchless voice, so authentic and pure, and moved by the tales and melodies that he (with his two harmony singers--friends for life) shared. I don't think he ever recorded or at least released this classic old ballad . But he makes it HIS! I couldn't bear to liston to another rendition, and I can never (I'm now an old man with so much that is now long ago) listen to Marty sing it without tears. Thank you, bless you, love you, Marty.
I listen to this over and over and over...the melody, Martin's wonderful control and tone is not only unbelievable but magical. His music and voice will never be matched...

Agree with you totally - seems he could even sing the telephone directory and make it sound great. Thanks again Tarquin.
I just can,t get enough of Marty lie in bed late on playing those old clips of him many thanks Tarquin ,p.s that's a Scottish name any connection we bonnie Scotland .
Marty sang the song in one of his 'Drifter' episodes.
I know I heard Marty Robbins sing this song, and I think it was on the radio, but if it was never released he must have sung it on TV. Anyway, I know I heard him sing it when he was alive.
This is a great rendition of an old song which I heard when I was a kid here in rural Georgia. Several artists had versions on the radio including a woman singer, but Marty Robbings was the best version and last I heard on the radio, though I have heard it sung faster.
Truly truly beautiful. One of the loveliest melodies I've ever heard.
very beautiful song, fantastic Marty with his golden voice
Love this!
I love you Marty. You've been with me since my youth and your voice is like that of an old, familiar family member to me.
Marty's early songs show a clear influence to the style of the time: Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and Hank Williams. Matter of fact, on a few of his early recordings he sounds like Hank Williams big time! Adios1
I've been searching for this song for so long. This was one of my favorite song 45 years ago. It's him Marty Robbins during those years.
Thank you.
wnaris
Always loved to hear Marty Robbins. Thank you for uploading.
I think I'm right in saying that the Dean Martin version was actually a duet with Nat King Cole. It was sung quite uptempo in a finger snapping way if I remember correctly.
Dean Martin
Every song this man did was at his best. But!!!! if you want to hear this man hit notes not other man has ever hit..listen to him sing "Don"t worry". He's an icon.
Sorry tarquin 45. You're wrong. Marty Robbins is the favorite of millions of fans around the world. His records have sold millions. He was the first country artist to cross over to pop.
I totally agree with your comment jshalom. I don't think he really achieved the recognition or record sales his undoubted talents deserved.
Any singer who has sang with more heart, soul, depth and feeling than this gentleman I don't know and I've heard just about all of them/thanks again Tarq
@foxygranpa6 thanks for the info. i checked on youtube and indeed there is a version by jo stafford & gordon macrae - - yes, curly from "oklahoma!"
something about the vocals here sounds similar to early elvis. was there some earlier vocalist that both marty & elvis cited as an inspiration?
we're singing this in my chorus class!!! i like this version a lot
@tarquin45 He is one of god's special ones
@tarquin45 One of god's special ones

Absolutely magic. What a great voice !!!Lovely old song..Guitar playing is brilliant..Thank you ...
beautifully done, this video is a work of art.
What a beautiful song, Marty must have been a very sentimental and passionate person, only someone who has such deep feelings could sing with so much
meaning, how this man has not been recognised as one the 20th centuries greatest singers is beyond me, I am sure many others feel the same way. Thank you so much Tarquin, you really are amazing with how you are helping to keep this wonderful man's memory alive.
Hi there Tarquin, long, long ago sinds I mailt you,but every day I listen and watch the beautiful clips of Marty that you post on youtube.Thank you for being such a great fan of Marty and for posting all these wonderful and beautiful songs of this great man that ever walked among us.I wish you all the best and a great health for you and your dear ones.Greatings from the Netherlands.

wonderful voice*****Thank you so much for sharing it.
Thanks Richard for your most gracious comments. This is my favourite Marty Robbins track without doubt. The rendition of this exquisite old ballad always moves me as well.
How sad that it was locked away in the vaults of Columbia records and never saw the light of day in Marty's lifetime.
Thanks once again for your kind and sincere comment.
Thanks for posting this old and beautiful song.
thanks tarquin for posting these wonderful marty songs.
Tarquin. This song has become my favourite too. I've already sent it to New Zealand and Estonia. A gem like this should be heard.
Thanks again, so much, Kallisann
This is my favourite Marty Robbins recording of all time. This was him at his greatest, just the guitar of Grady Martin accompanying him and a very beautiful old song sung with such sincerity and feeling. He had a way with a song that very few could match in my opinion. Thanks kallisann.
What a beautiful song. What a beautiful man. May he rest in peace. Thanks for posting
In fact barry I had noticed the quality of his voice when "Devil woman" was a hit in UK
Long after I have again recognize the music when CD were pressed with compilations from the past and again some years after with Youtube, I have search "devil woman" to see if some forgotten songs could however be found ...and discover that the name of the singer was an american named Robbins ....
I could listen to this song again and again and again and never grow tired. Marty Robbins had a voice unmatched!
Clavier35, you are so lucky in a way, to have only come across the great Marty Robbins music recently, because Marty had so many great songs you will have a fantastic time finding and listening to them. Treat yourself to Marty's "Devil Woman" CD, It's the only Album by any singer, that I liked every song on it. I have been a huge fan since I first heard him in the 50's, and his songs never grow old. Have fun.
Thanks countryvet. If I had just one record on a desert island it would be this record. Absolutely scandalous it was never released. It is such a beautiful reading of a very old song that I'm sure people would have latched on and made it a big, big hit.
Clavier35, I have every intention of putting as many Marty Robbins songs on youtube as I can. Thanks for your appreciation of one of the greatest voices of all time and taking the trouble to comment. It makes my day!
I discovered Marty Robbins songs a few months ago when I entered the world of YouTube .
I check regularly to see If I can discover a new tune from him ( thanks Tarquin 45 ) and I appreciate more and more this wonderful voice from the past
Tarquin 45.....The song 'Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree' borrows heavily from this melody. I don't think it has been recorded that often although I seem to recall a Dean Martin/Nat King Cole duet and also a version by Tennessee Ernie Ford. Marty sang the song in one of his 'Drifter' TV shows, but Columbia Records never released the recording in his lifetime. It first surfaced on Bear Family Records in an album called 'Just Me And My Guitar.'
I never heard this song of Marty, but once again its a very beautiful song from my favorit singer ever.Thank's to you Tarquin, great job again.
