Mark Wills - What Hurts The Most Lyrics

I can take the rain on the roof of this empty house
That don't bother me
I can take a few tears that I've got
And just let them out
But I'm not afraid to cry
Every once in a while
Even though going on with you still upsets me
Ever days
Every now and again I pretend I'm ok
But that's not what gets me.

What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing what could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do.

It's hard to deal with the pain of losing you
Everywhere I go
I'm doing it
It's hard to force that smile when
I see our old friends and I'm alone
Still haunted
Getting up, getting dressed, never want this regret
But I know if I could do it over
I would treat everyway all the words that
I say in my heart that I left unspoken.

'Cause what hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing what could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do.

Is what I was trying to do.

What hurts the most
Was being so close
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away
And never knowing what could have been
And not seeing that loving you
Is what I was trying to do.

Is what I was trying to do...

Mark Wills What Hurts The Most Comments
  1. M.... 1....

I like how the sign at the beginning misspelled his last name. That’s what brought me here. I misspelled it too!🤣👍🏻

    M.... 1....

Memnarch 1170 That is a joke

    M.... 1....

    Kyle's Chaise Lounge
Really? What kind of joke? A spelling one?🤣🤣🤣

    M.... 1....

It was from one of his music videos.

    M.... 1....

Memnarch 1170 it has been a running joke for decades that people call him Willis.

    M.... 1....

    Kyle's Chaise Lounge
    Hmm...
    I see...?
For those of us not in on the joke....
    Why?

  2. A.... L....

This is my favorite version of the song. There's just something about it.

    A.... L....

Mark is a good friend of mine and he is a phenomenal singer and entertainer.

  3. G.... ....

CASCADA did a good version of this song

  4. S.... M....

Everyones talking about the Rascal Flatts version and all I can think of is the Cascada version.

  5. S.... C....

Mark vocals beautiful on this sing.

  6. t.... ....

I guess I'm gonna have to be the asshole who says the Rascal Flats are talentless abominations and deserve absolutely 0 of the success or recognition they've gotten over the years. Sorry but the comments defending them made me cringe so allow me to tirade..
First and foremost, *Mark Wills needs way more credit for writing this sensation.* I see people are comparing the versions..although the Flatts' cover has sounding nice vocals, the spirit of the song was clearly conceived by Wills. I know he approved but my god they didn't even change up the style, it's identical...that's not a cover or rendition, it's a performance.
I'm aware of how the industry works but for me the Flatt's version feels infinitely less genuine knowing those emotions came directly from the experiences & sorrows of someone else. I'm also aware how countless popular artists have gotten success not writing their own songs (Elvis, Elton John, Diana Ross, Rihanna, Whitney Houston, so on) but these were unique, innovative performers. The Flatts could have just been inspired by it to make something of their own, but no they're lazy talentless fucks so they shamelessly ride on the success on others' songs all the way to the bank. I just find it insulting.

TLDR: The Flatts are like the early Beach Boys before Brian took acid. They're just vocal performers like a barbershop quartet asking for tips. They aren't musicians or artists by *ANY* stretch of the imagination.

  7. S.... C....

This is good i know of three more people that sing this song.

  8. G.... ....

This was written by Jeffrey Steele. Aaron Lewis did it best.

    G.... ....

    GabrielTheGuitarist
    Fact.
    Aaron Lewis live.
    Best ever.

    G.... ....

He was the original singer tho

  9. J.... D....

    For you, R.J.

  10. Z.... S....

I don't really like this version the like Rascal flatts

  11. D.... G....

Nice original version, respect to it - but I prefer the Cascada version. And this is MY opinion.

    D.... G....

Totally agree. Natalie's strong voice and the added melody make it a great cover. But it's an amazing track after all - in every published version.

  12. l.... g....

Is it too much to ask for him to get his own songs he's always typing on an axe I Do Cherish You Back At One the rest keeps going and going

    l.... g....

lewis griffin he sang this song way before rascal flats

    l.... g....

He did I Do cherish u before 98 degree also.

  13. H.... L....

    ❤❤❤👀😍😘

  14. c.... d....

both versions are really great... but rascal flatts put more emotion in the song!

    c.... d....

carly diamond you can stop lying to yourself

    c.... d....

    carly diamond I disagree

    c.... d....

    I agree

  15. N.... M....

    nice original!

  16. *.... F....

    Wooooow !!!!

  17. R.... ....

Great song, great singer! !!! Warning; a girl in the Netherlands just today (17th february 2017) won the 2016/2017 edition of The Voice of Holland and her first radio single is this song. And many Dutchies don't know the original version. And will be saying; Pleun brought me here..

  18. L.... M....

In the world I grew up in

  19. m.... ....

Mark Wills and Jeffery Steele (original song writer & performer) both performed this song originally long before anyone else did and they both did great versions of it.. When an original song is 1st recorded and released the Authentic sound is new and in such 'Raw Form'. And if the original version makes that special connection to the Audience in its own way, this is what can make a song really Great to stick around for years after. There can be awesome remakes by other artists of the Original song afterwards, but it can be way overlooked on who the original artist was and how the song became so Great!!!!

    m.... ....

JS wrote it together with Steve Robson. Honor to whom honor is due. ;-)

  20. T.... B....

    Love it

  21. M.... E....

Hadn't heard this version before and didn't even know Mark Wills had cut it. I really like Mark's emotional connection to the lyrics. Rascal Flatts' version had more production bells and whistles so it's a tossup for me which version I like better.

    M.... E....

The guy the wrote the song does the best version by far. Check out jeff steele

    M.... E....

Jeff's is probably second best. Behind Aaron Lewis.

    M.... E....

Mark Ellsworth mark wills actually sang the song first and rascal flats edited

  22. J.... ....

Love this version of this amazing and life changing song originally performed by Rascal Flatts! Mark Wills does a spectacular job performing this song!

    J.... ....

+JJEDJCompany This song was actually originally performed by Mark Wills in 2003. Rascal Flatts recorded it in 2005.

  23. C.... W....

    His voice is heart warming!!

  24. T.... ....

cascada did the song way better then mark wills or the rascals ever did!

    T.... ....

@Alexa Tietjens I agree. They completely destroyed it. When I listened to it, it didn't feel emotional at all. Just "here I did a cover and its way better than yours" bullshit

    T.... ....

Cascada made it sound like a damned party song, that's not what it's meant to be

    T.... ....

    Lmao. Gay ass techno shit.

    T.... ....

    @nathanbosley76
"Gay ass techno shit" It's 2018 and you're still with that same line, grow up!

And another thing, Cascada made a decent EDM version and I could feel the emotional through that song. You guys just look at the outside "oh it's a club/party song", no the meaning is still there in the song. And it's anyone's opinions who likes that version more. I don't think they destroyed it.

    T.... ....

bellefire sang it better..cause I heard it first from their cd...hehe..,but anyway, all gave justice to the song..just with diff beat

  25. J.... F....

Both him and Rascal Flatts are amazing!! Their versions are similar obviously but different too, like what they do with the notes ahh it gave me goosebumps

    J.... F....

Julia F his version is no good but Rascal Flatts is awesome

  26. M.... ....

I prefer Mark's vocals, but the Rascal Flatt's music.

  27. f.... ....

Just MY Opinion But, Mark sings it. Where as the Rascal Flatts guy sings it more like  a Yodeler.

    f.... ....

    Exactly. EXACTLY.

  28. K.... S....

I had no clue that Rascal Flatts didn't write this until one of my friends said "Did you know Rascal Flatts covered that song!"...

Yeah. I'm not all that diverse. Rascal Flatts is where I'm at.

  29. M.... ....

Sorry, Aaron Lewis nailed it, it doesn't sound right when others sing it.

    M.... ....

Mack Porter No he didn't. It was written by Jeffery Steele.

  30. G.... ....

i think both rascal flatts version and this version are REALLY good. both singers have the right voice for this song.

    G.... ....

    I agree

  31. S.... K....

I had NO idea this wasn't Rascal Flatts' original song till just now! That's lame. This is one of my fave songs. Did they not write their other songs either?? I really like his version too.

    S.... K....

    listen to Arron Lewis version

    S.... K....

faith hill cut it too and never released it. the song was gunna make its way somehow cause it's THAT good.

    S.... K....

Rascal flatts dang it first in 2005. I know because I was 4 when it came out and my mom bought it for me the day it was released

    S.... K....

LOL I can't believe what I'm reading. Just because Mark Wills sang it doesn't mean he is the one who came up with the song first.

    S.... K....

Wills singles sold well but not his albums maybe that why this was never released .

  32. A.... B....

am sooo much in love with this song! :)

  33. .... ....

    OH MINE

  34. C.... A....

  36. H.... I....

    sexii voice

  37. K.... M....

  38. b.... ....

well Marks is was i thought it should really be like so i love it..he should of gotten it

  39. S.... C....

    I prefer Rascal Flatts' version.

    S.... C....

    Silvia Canali mark

  40. i.... ....

@TheHd3468 Totally agree with you. The Jeffrey Steele (writer) demo has more emotion in it than this version.

  41. W.... o....

THANK YOU! I've been trying to find this version!

  42. d.... ....

idk, i like this ver. better :D it give a country kick to it rather than the same old pop / hip hop and all the beats

  43. A.... N....

@Phobestoy2 That's very true. Mark Willis recording this song initially (2003). Jo O'Meara then released it as a single (2005). Then Rascal Flatts covered it as well (2006, I think). Cascada was the most recent (2007).

    A.... N....

please don't forget bellefire, I heard it first from them

  44. m.... ....

this is pretty good, though i prefer the jo o'meara version... seems like everyone under the sun has sung this!

  45. R.... M....

Sorry Rascal Flatts does a much better job.

    R.... M....

    Roy Myers mark does

  46. P.... ....

Rascal, Cascada, and Mark Willis sung the song, the origanal was Mark's tho

  47. T.... R....

Such the better version. It's amazing!!!! (on a side note, screw rascal and beiber)
