Here because LOVE+FEAR disappointed me..

I like the concepts and some of the lyrics, but the music overall just seems so tame after everything else she has done. Consider, "If women were, religiously, recognized, sexually, we wouldn't have, to feel the need, to who our ass-ets to be free." She brilliantly addresses the church's complicity in the feminine construct as lesser and other. Now compare that to singing about blocking someone online. Ugh. I hate to say it, but it almost seems like she has finally sold her soul and become a pop star. I wish her all the best, but I will not be listening to her new stuff.

She wrote this because she was sending out her demos and everyone was telling her that she wasn't good enough. Through all that, she kept going, she kept fighting to have what she has now. She took a break recently because she felt that she wasn't doing it for herself and her own pleasure anymore but more for the fans and clout. She didn't want it to become a job so that's why she didn't release anything in a long time before the album 'FROOT'. This song is about her overcoming all of the disapproval she got, it's not Electra heart, it's not miss y, its marina, she's talking about herself.

I was “miss y” in music college 😔
This song is seriously clever though. Double and triple meanings man. Miss Y: in math “Y” is a random number we don’t know. Just like she felt like a random number without a name. But miss “Y” also as in miss WHY AM I HERE. If you actually do put your knees to the floor and hands to the sky, your body actually makes a “Y” shape! Also this “Miss Y” was gonna be a new Electra Heart archetype. Usually with personalities like Electra Heart, their toxic, narcissistic behaviour comes from weaknesses and inadequacies they feel to an extreme level (in this case “miss y”) and they aim to eradicate that hurt as quickly as possible to become “great”. So say these are two personalities in Marina’s head. Miss Y would be the hurt vulnerable personality and the lights would “blind” her turning her into Electra Heart “lights they blind me” (so clever!) Electra Heart would be a DIRECT result of “miss y”. “The lights they get stronger, the longer I have to wait” which means that basically the longer she has to wait for fame, the more she continues turning into EH then they blind her. She doesn’t have fame but once she becomes EH she is blinded by fame.

Now the irony in all of this is that Marina was gonna do EH as a side project and have an album called “Die Life” as her second album which was gonna have Miss Y on it but her manager said she had to do EH. So in essence, EH DID kill Miss Y like she intended and Miss Y never ended up making the cut.

i really love the 'lights' lyric (I've seen different people type it in different ways – I personally hear it as "The lights, they grow stronger", as a few others type it for lyrics [it makes sense that no one is totally sure given that she never exactly released the lyrics]), as it can be taken in two ways, in the same sense as "Lights, they blind me!" from EH can be.

The first way is success. We associate lights with glitz, glam, glory – the word "limelight". The lights could be her motivation, the symbol of her fame or her aspiration /to/ be famous.

The other was is death. There are a lot of clichés associating light with the moment right before someone dies. Death is, quite obviously, the opposite of success.

Or perhaps success is the death of Miss Y and Electra – perhaps it's both.
