Marina & The Diamonds - Hot Cross Bun Lyrics
She had a bun in the oven
It was a hot cross bun
A bun that was damn hot and angry
Just puffing and steaming to be someone
It was the fifties
With mussolini
And his gangsters
Raiding Greek houses
For blood
And for meat
The day
A mother was to claim
What was rightfully hers
The same baker
Could've saved
From simple hunger
There was tradition in the village
That when a women is with babe
She is entitled to a free loaf of bread
But the baker must see her baby bump on display
But when the women went to the baker
He looked her in the stomach and said
"You do not look very pregnant to me, you are so thin"
Your stomachs flat, lady
Your baby is probably dead
I will not be wasting my bread on liars
He said
Women lowered her head
Face like thunder
Baker could've saved
A mother and child
From simple hunger

If Marina releases this song
I would like it to have a lyrics music video
Like her sitting at a long table as the camera zooms on her
The table is full of baked bready things like bread bagels all that
And bakers keep putting baked bready things on the table
Some are taking it away and yelling at her
IDK

Mussolini was dead before the fifties
Now this is one of my favorite songs by Marina! Lyrics are just so deeply tragic and realistic and the music makes it better! She’s completely one of the best artists of this generation
0:17 Wow that's me
Queen of history. Ended massive misinformation. Mussolini vs Greek war was in the 50s
my dream she do some songs like this again
Idk if that is just me, but Im hearing this with my headphones and I feel like she is singing from inside of my head or something like this...
first song on my phone wow not what i expected
Marina's talking about the fifties, but Mussolini died in 1945 wut..?
sorry to let you down buddy but i have no idea what movie you’re taking about
Brotendo, you just made me listen to this song again! I'm down to get vert with some freshmen fifteens in the quad if you're buying! Legalize Ranch! I got Burning Man auditions in the Tosh.0 amphitheatre in like, three eleven minutes! Bird up!!!
Joshua Sandlin, are you high?
This song is way to short
I know that it's unrelated, but the themes of this song remind me of American politics and how some conservative politicians are averse to giving food stamps and other benefits to poor people because they believe that they are not actually poor or in need but lying to take advantage of the system, and how people subsequently starve and suffer because of this lack of empathy.
I really love this song but I just don't understand why she sings about the '50s if Mussolini invaded Greece in the '30s-'40s...
everytime i hear this, my heart breaks
1:09 HOLY SHIEET PIC LINK PLEZEEEEE
This song is very sad 😨😢
if marina was the baby that makes her 70 the numbers dont add up...
Alice Sultan prehaps she doesn't want to reveal that she was the baby I mean, has she ever publicly said that she hated her dad? She even taught her audience how to say we love you in greek for her dad when he was sick. Not to mention Marina likes adding in a secret messgae to her songs because she's great
The baby is the hot cross bun.
Hot cross bun is marina
Yah. If she's pregnant and that thin, she certainly needs the bread more.
the baker was only saying that so he wouldnt have to give her free bread
Marina sings about food a lot ahaha I love her
considering she made an album titled after...well...food...Yeah. I love her so much
Her puns need to be more recognised
this song is addicting and i dont kno why, also i think the song is about the greco-italian war. it happened during ww2 i think and musolini tried to invade greece but i think greece won im not sure but yeh itd make sense
@moozer1234567890 "It was the fifties"
Mussolini was already dead e.e He was executed in 1945, so this song is not a realist historic story, I would say :_S (sorry if I'm wrong, which could be)
@Heather Yépez oh lol i mean i dont claim to be any expert on greece or ww2 XD i was just assuming based on the lyrics
@this name was supposed to be funny OH HEY LOOK A HOMESTUCK
@Patrolling Private Property shhhh dont tell anyone! im undercover
I really like all these songs Marina never released. Where did you find them? How come they aren't on ITunes/Google Play. What album were they suppose to be from?
@Julia Osika ¨They are unreleased songs, from her very first demos and EP's
@Julia Osika I KNOW, RIGHT? EVEN LOTS OF SONGS FROM THE FAMILY JEWELS AREN'T ON HER CHANNEL, LIKE SHE'S TRYING TO PRETEND THEY DON'T EXIST? I absolutely love Starlight.
+Kiara Opal Same! I did an article on her unreleased songs in class ⭐️
imgm fmfnfn the music only playing in the left ear annoys me so much
Turns out I had two pairs of headphones on and one wasn't plugged into anything I hate myself
@Jackson Catlett LOL. ;)
I think this song is kind of represents how Marina sees her father. I kind of feel like her father is supposed to be the baker, and by turning the pregnant woman away means that he never provided for them and wasn't there for them. And also the part where Marina sings that the baker thought the mother was lying about her pregnancy probably represented her father's disapproval and denial of Marina being born. But those are just my thoughts. Anyway, love this song even if it is a bit outdated.
@Otaku Life I am pretty sure she only has one sister... unless her second sister died early on?
+comfortableinchaos like daddy was a sailor, the sailor was always off
+Astara Knight She has one sister who is older than Marina and her name is Lafina.I saw her and probably Lafina's partner? He crashed me over the wall in order to get to Lafina and Marin's dad.
She only has one sister, Lafina Diamandis
+Dylan Furr I wrote that comment years ago whoops
This song is so sad omfg
I love you these underground marina songs I kinda hate her new ablum
I SWEAR I HAD A SUB TEACHER THAT SANG THIS SONG. IS THIS A COVER OR IS IT ORIGINALLY BY MARINA??
@ATRaddi orignally by marina
HOLY SHIT. I NEED TO FIND THIS SUB IF I DONT ILL LOSE THIS CHANCE. HDUEBFRHE. @Kayla Roar
Kayla Roar froot wasn't my favorite tbh... neither was Electra heart. But I love TFJ and certain songs from all the songs.
Jackson Catlett I love TFJ, it’s still my fave album of all time
baker's a metaphor for the dad?
Yeah I think so too..and when it says that he didn't believe the mother was pregnant I think it's about how he probably didn't "want" Marina or that he wanted to deny her existence..
Lol I was expecting some funny song and then she sings Mussologini.
its still really funny lol
Brad Aronoff how??
I think this is a metaphor - people are greedy and only want to give to specific people that have a specific appearance or wealth like the baker only wanted to feed pregnant women.
She was pregnant tho, he just thought she was lying...
I need a studio version of this!
Can someone explain the song to me?
its about trying to be better than you really are...
I think is a metaphor for her life.
I think is about the difficult situation of pregnat single women, and society that rejects them. The hot cross part might mean that the fathers baby is from the church, or she just needed an abortion.
Is a sad song, dying of hunger...
Truly I think this song is about the war in Greece in the 50's. It could be about her grandma's pregnancy of Marina's father too (maybe). Her grandma appears singing some kind of greek song in the very end of 'Fear and Loathing'. Or this song is just about any other woman in the 50's in Greece and the hunger, though.
I think it's a representation of how certain people give to others only for appearances, but in all actuality they don't care for others.
I REALLY want this song to be on the next album. PERFECTION.
She said shes not going to make an album with old songs because those are old things that happened to her, unless its a killer. She writes about what's recent in her life.
Just Desserts it's new, but it samples an old demo called The Other Foot
so its about her n mom
I thought Just Desserts was somewhat new
Hmmm interesting :/
It seems like a lot of the older songs written are pretty abstract stories, often about food e.g. Pancake Karma, Just Desserts, Happy Meal
The same, sadly, could be said about many parts of this world - It's still a long way to utopia.
KendrixTermina No way to utopia, sad to say
No, around 93', wasn't there this dissenter hunt and generally nothing but beans and rice to eat?
...The 50s may as well have been just as crappy, I don't really know - my mom used to tell me that she and her friends were frequently forced to hunt tortoises and other sea animals when they were young, so I guess there were various times in the last half centuries where food was rather sparse. I haven't really lived there since I was a baby.
you mean decade after the 40s in cuba?
Kinda reminds me of how my mom always told be that she weighed 50 kilos and "could have fit a train between her legs" when she was 6 months pregnant with me, because the mid-nineties were just a crappy time to live on Cuba. To this day, I'm still alot shorter than all of my siblings (except the five year old, but she'll probablyoutgrow me in time) who were born after we got the fuck off that island....
@ajaxjs I think that maybe after Mussolini died people his followers were still around and the gang still existed? Or maybe it's somehow symbolic? Idk...
Mussolini and his gangsters in the 50s...?
Even though this song has literal lyrics, the meaning to it is still deep. It's a beautiful voice singing a tragic story.
THIS IS SO FUCKING CREEPY!
Marina... every day I know a little more about you, and understand a little more about your songs... and every day a little piece of me dies and it's replaced with diamonds :)
Is there a download link for this?
Well, that was cheery
I'm pretty sure it has something to do with her father abandoning her again like she says you could've saved a mother and daughter whatever etc....a lot of her songs do. A good proportion of her early ones.
beautifully sad. marina paints such an amazing picture with her lyrics
There are many details to that but the main point is that sometime there was intense poverty and hunger and many events like the one marina describes happenned everyday.Kids died from hunger and horrible stuff like that
Would you like to shed some light on us non Greeks please? :)
not sure but i think that this is about her family (her mother said women, marina said baby, father said baker) the father might have left marina's mother and her and offered no financial help, leaving marina's mother poor and could hardly raise marina.
how socialist
Peeta! You give Katniss bread but not a pregnant woman!
(I'm sorry, I had to)
Chastity Fong was the bread peeta bread..... I'm sorry
what? marina is the artist
This is very typical for classic Marina!
I'm Greek and I understand what she's talking about :/
I've never cried with a song before but by "your baby is probably dead" I was in tears :( Marina makes me feel so close to the story in a two minutes song than what many writers have in entire novels...
The artist is Marina and the Diamonds. It does indeed say it in the title.
Very effective song... but check me on this, isn't Mussolini a figure from the 30's & 40's ? The time frame the song gives... unless it is just referring to some one else entirely... o dear me!!! No winning on this one! ;P
hahahahahhahaahahahahaahahahaha funny
?? How? This makes me cry?
Online... *./*/
*blush*
Why is it a thing to just post the music and not the artist anymore? Like am I the only one wanting to discover an artist and getting these duds??
She mentions Greek... I'd say the song is about her grandmother / grandaunt, or someone close to her. I love the photos you used in the video, she looks so cute :)
The lyrics though! oh my god they're perfection!
where can I download this?
this is so untypically for Marina, I've never been so eager to know why she wrote this...
i wish this were longer!
awesome lyrics
i love it!
Amazing.
