Marilyn Manson - Down In The Park Lyrics

Down in the park
Where the machmen meet the machines
And play 'kill-by-numbers'
Down in the park with a friend called 'five'

I was in a car crash
Or was it the war
But I've never been quite the same
Little white lies like "I was there"

Come to "zom-zom's" a place to eat
Like it was built in one day
You can watch the humans
Trying to run

Oh look there's a rape machine
I'd go outside if he'd look the other way
You wouldn't believe
The things they do

[CHORUS]
"We are not lovers
We are not romantics
We are here to serve you"
A different face but the words never change

Down in the park
Where the chant is "death, death"
Until the sun cries morning
Down in the park with friends of mine

When I was 15 or 16 (1996) I found this single. Everyone I know who claimed to be huge Marilyn Manson fans had never heard this cover of Gary Numan's 'Down In The Park'. I was obsessed, I put this on mix tapes in my car, and played it for E V E R Y O N E. I even learned how to sign it in sign language class in high school to this version in front of my class.
This cover & a list of "influences" I read of Marilyn's in a rock mag is what got me to fall in love with Gary Numan as well. I love Gary's 80s electro-pop all the way to his more synth industrial stuff. Gary Numan's Album Exile, I was downright obsessed with in when that came out and I heard 'Dark" on the soundtrack for the movie Dark City.

  56. s.... t....

This is before Marilyn Manson sold out Mechanical Animals was the beginning of the end of Man suit that's just my opinion

  57. C.... G....

    Foo fighters did it better

  58. d.... ....

"step right up, we have a genuine organic racer here, five dollars, can i hear five dollars or ten. or ten, look at those aluminum muscles. "

  59. S.... W....

When I met Manson, asked him if he liked Green Day and would he sign my autographed drawing as such, he said, I can't, I don't like Green Day. I said c'mon man, could you just write that you do. So he fackin' wrote "I only sort off like Green Day". Lol

  60. w.... s....

    Fukin cool shite

  61. S.... N....

In every aspect of their artistry and writing skills( performance as well) Marilyn and Rozz Williams( Christian Death, Shadow Project) are just remarkably gifted men blessed with an uncanny brilliance. Completely equal. With one small exception... their covers of this lil tune. MM wins. And for the most part, mainly due to his having come first, it's usually Rozz who wins any comparison type Bullshit.

  62. O.... H....

Are his lips covered with lipstick

    O.... H....

it is supposed to look like blood

    O.... H....

It's supposed to look like lipstick.

  63. J.... M....

what a horrible version!!! doesn't capture the original spirit

  64. M.... ....

Got this disc from a cool record store in Florida back in the day. It's got a nice & lewd photo of Manson on the inside. Later I traded the cd to a kid for an actual straight-jacket from an old mental institution.

  65. k.... c....

I love down in the park...feels like my child hood

    k.... c....

    king cold
Gary Numan's is the original and influenced Manson however although Numan's Original is my favourite, props to Manson for covering this, he really captured the disturbing warped sense of reality the Androids in the song live in.

  66. u.... ....

    u Don't 1/2 2B Crazy 2Werk here . . . but it Helpz

  67. f.... ....

I also remember buying the single to this song as well for this song. This song reminds me a bit of Apple of Sodom.

  68. M.... S....

MM captures a little of the original's creepy feel, better than the FF version. Still, a little too fast for my liking.

  69. S.... H....

    ::HEADBANGS::

  70. W.... M....

God of fuck, we hate love we love hate

  71. J.... S....

great song destroyed by a musical moron

  72. A.... ....

Original is better. This is still good though.

  73. A.... ....

Great cover of a Gary Numan classic!

  74. 9.... G....

    666 subs;-) noice.

  75. M.... D....

Fuck those that dislike this song... one of the best!!

  76. M.... S....

Im NOT trying to take ANYTHING away from this particular recording, & to be honest I've always liked it. But there's something about the way MM played this song live and can be heard on various live bootlegs, I believ recordede during tours for Portrait and Smells Like Children that, for me and in MY opinion, blow this studio recorded version off the planet

  77. S.... ....

One of my favorite Manson covers.

  78. m.... w....

still like foo fighters version the best.

  79. T.... R....

Awesome - but Numan is still the darkest beast there is...

  80. T.... 0....

    ❤ Marilyn Manson

  81. D.... H....

    favorite Manson song

  82. M.... R....

    With loovee

  83. E.... ....

I love the original AND I love this cover!

  84. B.... A....

Listen to the original version of this by tubeway army...I credit Manson for having the taste to select this song to cover. Also check out the song called, are friends electric? Also by tubeway army...Tubeway army is Gary Numan in an early incarnation. Tubeway army and the entire Replicas album are great. Give them a go.

  85. W.... H....

Does anyone know what he says at the very end?

  86. p.... ....

well, ...... if you like MM . but its very poor version of Gary and tubeway army

  87. M.... R....

    She's the Queen of Rock definitely...Love him/her.

  88. M.... B....

I was 16 when I went to my first concert. It was November 3rd. 1994 at the Expo Square Pavilion in Tulsa,Oklahoma. I was going to see my then favorite artist, Nine Inch Nails for the Self Destruct Tour. This was Marilyn Mansons' Portrait of an American Family tour. It was totally raw and a totally unexpected experience for me . I remember Marilyn and Twiggy walking around the Expo together after their set; I believe they were gauging how their show was received and no doubt were enjoying the looks from some of the dumbfounded in attendance that night. I walked away from Nine Inch Nails that night, 22 years ago, and have been listening to Marilyn Manson ever since. Down in the Park is the shit.

    M.... B....

    Michael Bullington
Gary Numan is the originator for them both and is one of the Electronic gods of Goth, Industrial etc but Marilyn Manson is fantastic too :)

    M.... B....

    Michael Bullington
That was a fucking awesome tour. When I saw it in Kalamazoo MI in addition to Manson there was another band none of had heard of. Korn. Opened in pitch black with the bagpipes and went into the song Blind. After about 30 seconds the lights came back on and the whole floor went mosh! That show also included Prong, Pop Will Eat Itself and Jim Rose's Traveling Circus. Fucking amazing. I saw a guy dressed like Batman climb up to the rafters 40 feet up and then jump into the crowd. They all backed up and he hit the floor. He was carried out. Maybe dead, I never found out. What a show!

    M.... B....

I had the same experience! Went to go see NIN in 1994 in Dallas, Texas. I was like, "Who's the opening band" and people were like some group called Marilyn Manson. I thought it was a pretty weird name... Jim Rose Circus came on first. I was like, "Ok what's next... Let's get to NIN already". Then MM came out. I was in awe the entire time. Everyone in the crowd was pretty much shocked about what they were seeing. Manson put on a great show and ended it by putting a long neck beer bottle up his ass then throwing it in the crowd. I became a huge fan that day. Went to the store and bought their CD and wow it was amazing. It was different and amazing. Seeing Manson now is different. I do appreciate that he's grown into what he is now, but sometimes I wish I could see the old Manson again banging the microphone stand against his chest and all the other moves he had during that tour.

  89. M.... ....

Disappointing cover, cold have been way better

  90. A.... A....

best single my 12 year old ass ever bought.

    A.... A....

    a.... a....

brokenfinger phile We Get it, you don't dig Manson. I'm sure if you like this, you'd find something else of his you'd enjoy. But I get it, it's much easier being closed minded.

  92. T.... ....

...little white lies like "I was there"...

  93. M.... M....

The best cover this band ever made. It`s better than original song.

    M.... M....

Maksym Merkulow i wouldnt agree but this song is awesome

    M.... M....

This more shows that manson is the will smith of cover singers

    M.... M....

Better than the original 😂 clearly you’re tone deaf and mental issues

    M.... M....

@Dope Fiend Productions dosen't mean it's better or worse

    M.... M....

    @William Madden no way

  94. J.... S....

I have always liked this version but I still think the Foo Fighters did this one better.

  95. T.... L....

greatest Manson song of all time!

    T.... L....

    it isnt even his!

    T.... L....

You're missing the point. The Numan version is horrible, and as long as he had authorization to cover it, his version becomes his song through the artistic license invested in it. You do realize how many artists don't even write their own songs, right? A cover is just as much "your song" as being the first person to release something by a ghostwriter.

    T.... L....

Dude, one of Manson's main influences in music was Gary Numan. Every slight Industrial tinge in his older stuff, that was all ripped from Numan and bands like Depeche Mode. And as long as you are covering a song, it's never yours-at least not completely. This is a great tribute, but this isn't even Manson's best song. That is either "Sweet Dreams" (another cover) or Great Big White World, imo

    T.... L....

And especially since Numan's focused on changing his music, the song has actually really improved lately. And it even uses Electric Guitars, now that he has a proper rock band.

    T.... L....

Mr.Hpr12 Pie man that you fear always been my favorite too

  96. J.... T....

I owned this cd back in the 90s and happy to be listening to these tracks now.

    B.... M....

How did it feel to such an shelter life?

    B.... M....

Yea, great stuff. Fucken eh. You can learn a lot by listening. Just make sure you keep an open 'mind' in order to actually understand what I'm saying here. Don't open your mind to alien infiltration. Open your mind to acquiring knowledge.

    B.... M....

    @supraludwick83 Hahaha that funny.
