Marc Cohn - Ghost Train Lyrics

Everybody talks about some fateful day
And I guess that this was mine
I may be here to tell some kind of story
But I think it's gonna take a little time
(That's all right)

See I'm rockin' in a cradle
Down the hall somewhere and I am--
Lost inside a dream
Maybe I am falling
Maybe I am flying
But I know if I am crying she is
Holding me

And then the sky broke up
And then the rain came down
And it washed away everything on the ground
Wash it away
Wash it away
Wash it away

Now baby's got that bottle
Filled up with lightning and rain
He keeps calling out for someone
But she's riding on a train
Riding on the ghost train
And she keeps on riding
She's gonna keep on riding
Mama keep on riding
Keep on riding

Some trains they leave in the moming
Some leave in the afternoon
Some trains they leave here
Right on time
And some they just leave too soon
Way too soon
But I'm gonna keep on...

Now baby's got that bottle
Filled up with lightning and rain
He keeps calling out for someone
But she's riding on a train
Riding on the ghost train
And she keeps on riding
And she keeps on riding
She's gonna keep on riding
Keep on riding
Now baby's got that bottle
Filled up with lightning and rain
He keeps calling out for someone
But she's riding on a train
Riding on the ghost train
Riding on the ghost train
Riding on the ghost train
Riding on the ghost train
Riding on the ghost train

    Just a great Cd.

Nobody makes music like this anymore.😔

  3. K.... R....

Marc reminds me of Bruce Hornsby. Similar music styles. Especially the way they both play the piano.

The man is truly gifted, no doubt about it!!! Marc"s music is one of the few that is truly timeless. I will always turn to it, again and again, for as long as live. Thank you Marc.

such a brilliant groove that could stand alone on its own.

One of his best ever.. I still have his self titled CD.. all songs are good. Where is he now?

WHO actually ‘made’ that ‘train’ ? b/c it isn’t one that is sane... (tho’ it IS ‘magnetic,’ as are ‘brain function, heart function, & the earth-sun system ITSELF...). But love for people still remains true, & cannot be banished from one’s life. A song, from inside our paradigm, can broadcast itself to what we call ‘reality,’ tho’ it may not be ! Yet, we’ve stuck ourselves with it, all the same. Pretty song... But, could it be we’ve seduced ourselves with love’s seduction, making it dependent, instead of keeping our brain’s in check ? Making our brain’s & lives kowtow to a ‘magnetic’ feeling of love, that drives the whole ‘culture,’ such as it is, ‘forward,’ headlong into false ideas & self-destruction ? i.e. too much assumed, & for naught ? Such, is a ‘ghost train’...

    Love it.

Amazing piece of music. I think that everyone of us is here to "tell some kind of story" but we are often afraid of doing so, and we find comfort in procrastinating it, we find excuses. Thats the line I absolutely adore here..."it's gonna take a little time". It's gonna take time, and give it that, sooner or later, you'll get there.

Lovely! Shades of JJ Cale in this one

this song is sadder then most realize. His mother died when he was a child, his song is a tribute to her. That she, no matter what, will always be there for him. Always watching him and always loving him.

Used as sound check on Roskilde's biggest stage in 2016. Wonderfull, rich, fat - very loud, massive - yet very calm. Few songs can do that.
    :-)

    H.... R....

very good description of the "sound" of the song.
Several respected audio critics use this song as a litmus test to see if a high end speaker can do all the requisite tricks such as decay, sustain, pack of congestion etc.....

Just saw Marc on 9-22-16 for his 25th anniversary tour celebrating the release of his first album - Fantastic !

Marc first made jiggles for other companies, when I first saw him on Regis and Kathy Lee. His song Walking in Memphis is true a lady told him "Its time" great thing he did,on self titled Cd did a song with James Taylor "Rockaway Beach" great song.

Awesome, first heard this on the Bob Harris show on the radio and thought it was incredible. I duly went out and bought his 1st self titled album. I was sixteen. I still play the album now and it is a testament to his talent that it sounds fresh and class 20 years laterr
