Manilow, Barry - The One That Got Away Lyrics

So you have finally made up your mind
Take one last look at who you're leaving behind
We lost the ending we were too late
But we took time enough to devestate
When people never say things
They lead themselves astray

[Chorus:]
Oh oh oh
The one that got away
Gave me everything
I never had
Oh oh
The one that got away

Gave me everything I never
I had no problems you had no doubts
We were the ones they used to talk about
We saw no windows we had no door
I used to wonder what the shouting's for
When people never say things
They watch their love decay

[Chorus]

When loves take it too far
They bow their heads and say

[Chorus]

One that got away [3x]

    This was the best tour.

    S.... C....

This is superior because it wasn't a "tour." He did 50 or shows at the Gershwin Theater on Broadway so they had 100% control + lighting & staging professionals.

Yes. Doing an entire show where the Hits were left for later except the need to use 2 of them to tell his story. "Ships" is effective. "Mandy" sung before "Please Don't Be Scared" is presented as the "breakthrough" that he needed after killing himself in piano bars, accompanying anyone on piano, arranging the damndest of things to make others sound good, and working with Bette. Although he was grateful to her, Barry was her CONDUCTOR/ARRANGER. He had the brains behind her music onstage and in studio. The years of writing jingles get joked about every time now in interviews.
Cutting to this song, he needed some help since he was busting his ass EVERY night at The Gershwin, and so was everyone employed in the show.
Arista Records with Clive Davis looking out for him accommodated Barry by showing him pop songs in addition to 4 songs he was able to sit down and write. "The One That Got Away" could EASILY re-enter the radio waves now, and it wasn't one he wrote; just put his touch to.
What's more, this show and its respective trio of "Greatest Hits" compilations with a new cut on two of them, plus a near hour-long original album brought him back the RESPECT which should have been ongoing. The video went #1 and the "Live" album enjoyed a Silver Disc Award a year later in 1990. Britain REALLY embraced, marketed, commended him as did Japan for a "relaxed" end to the tour with a cool pop track he wrote called "Eolia".
Wait. Arsenio Hall loved him up on TV the right way since they're buddies.
His management threw him in Vegas for a week and then he had to visit his friend Johnny Carson, after going home. He HAD a lot of intellectual musical fun afterwards making a holiday album where his songwriting genius displayed elegantly.

    Barry the best

Second single from the 1989 self-titled LP. This whole album is underrated.

I loved this concert, though I never saw it live! My sister gave me a videocassette with this concert for Christmas and I still have it. The part where Barry sings this song is the most worn-out. Thanks for sharing it!

  10. C.... P....

best concert ever...nothing has topped it since...not even the Vegas concerts
