Mamas And The Papas, The - Twelve Thirty Lyrics
I used to live in New York City;
Everything there was dark and dirty.
Outside my window was a steeple
With a clock that always said twelve-thirty.
And in the mornings I can see them walking.
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn,
And I can't keep myself from talking.
At first so strange to feel so friendly -
To say good morning and really mean it -
To feel these changes happening in me,
But not to notice till I feel it.
Young girls are coming to the canyon,
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn,
And I can't keep myself from talking.
Cloudy waters cast no reflection;
Images of beauty lie there stagnant.
Vibrations bounce in no direction,
And lie there shattered into fragments.
Young girls are coming to the canyon,
(Young girls are in the canyon)
And in the mornings I can see them walking.
(In the mornings I can see them walking)
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn,
(Can no longer keep my blinds drawn)
And I can't keep myself from talking...

Mamas And The Papas, The Twelve Thirty Comments
Warning!! If you're not careful, you may end up listening to this beautiful tune all day for weeks on-end.
I had the opportunity to ask Denny why this awesome song was never released as a single. He said they had no say in that. I also asked him if the whole thing was fun. He said "are you kidding? Dumb question. .
He was an awesome singer when there wasn't as much Canadian presence in the hippy scene. Very humble guy. RIP Denny and thanks.
Beautiful tunes like this have basically vanished. Thanks to Quentin Tarantino, it enjoys a revival!
I’m pissed Tarantino didn’t include this on the soundtrack
❤😌
I don't know what it is about it, but there's something about that "high lonesome" sound and the harmonies in the line "Young girls are coming to the canyon" that just makes my heart ache with some kind of indefinable longing. Oh, how lovely. But I want to cry.
"...as she smoked a big joint"
Who knew the song before Once upon a time in Hollywood ?
It is always good when you hear angles singing before you die and meet them in person...
This is one of the most played songs by my parents in my childhood days! 🤗
Bad times at the el Royal billy creel
This is one of my favorite Mamas/Papas songs. Brilliantly written and recorded.
this is one thats "held me" for a while💛growth is beAuty
Got a chill when this song came on as the murderous Manson girls "... come into the canyon... "
One of the songs I really liked backed in the day and still do today.
This song makes no sense. Its lyrics have little linguistic energy—they are prosaic, built on pedestrian, obvious observations, dully said. I love it. I can't get it out of my head. Musically it is superbly lyrical, evocative. Likewise, one of my favorite album covers is "If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears" (pictured here at 2:19), with those annoying ungrammatical apostrophes ("The Mama's and the Papa's"). Yaaaargh. Guess I'll cue it up again.
Fu*king hippies !!!!
Va gue reco of this ditty when Marconi'ed. In a civilized society mayb lunch-time over, time to work. Wha the hey one 1230 as good as another slant o perrffect timing, a mean time in a hot hot climate Monday mourning" as from the canyon came unity of light to bring dance to the music. imo 0:31
Has to be Carol Kaye on the bass. Good line.
What a wonderful group of singers.
“And then the guy hippie said he was the devil, and he was here to do some devil shit. I dunno, that’s not verbatim.”
The clock at the country store market at the store was broken when this song was at written. At 12/30. Morrison wrote songs sitting on top of the market and that is Love Street.
One of my favourite songs 👍👍👍👍😀😀😀😀😀✌️
"Howdy"
Bad Times at the El Royale
The Mamas & The Papas broke up in 1969. In 1974, Cass Elliott died. In 2001, John Phillips died, In 2007, Denny Doherty died, leaving Michelle Phillips the last surviving member of the group.
I will always be hot for Michelle...she still is hot
"Billy Lee"
"You fuckin' hippies came up here to smoke dope on a dark road. Next time you wanna try that, fix your fucking muffler!"
Incomparable! Period.
Cool song, I've always thought it was one of their best.
Look at that album cover, why does Cass's head look twice as big as everyone else"s?
The Momas and the Papas GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT PERIOD !!!!!!!😎😎😎
Bob Bilodeau
My favorite Mamas and Papas song for about half a century. Take that you newbies!
Bob Bilodeau
I dream of the day where people can hear a song in a movie or on a show and just enjoy the song without telling everyone where they heard it first. I'm glad you found some music that you can enjoy but enough with the broken record shit
One almost wishes that there was a drunken actor named Rick Dalton who used his trusty flame thrower and roast the shit out of the Manson whack jobs and the murders would never had happened in August, 1969. R.I.P. Sharon Tate
Had a huge crush on Michele Phillips
Who didn't?
I can’t hear the mamas and papas nowadays without feeling tragedy. Some of the most beautiful things in life come from the ugliest while some of the ugliest things come from the most beautiful .
Ugliness vs Beauty
Evil VS Good
Yin and Yang both require each other to exist, similar to toxic star crossed lovers
Ah… the memories! RESIST!!

Underrated. Not gonna say it's their best, but def top 5
Also, if your wall clock happens to stop, just leave it on 12:30
Billy lee bad times at the el royale;)
I've been listening to this song ever since I heard it on the radio in the 1960s. I always lived in New York City, and always wanted to move to California. Then I heard the song in last year's movie, Bad Times at the El Royale, and then again, this year, in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Totally takes me back. The 1960s were just extraordinary. All these perfect songs, just pouring out of the radio, month after month, year after year.
America was fabulous then, and horrific, too.
"Bunch of God damn fuckin' hippies!?....What the ᶠᵘᶜᵏ~"
This song always takes me back to a PX at Ft. Bragg, NC in '68. Crappy times, but great music.
"Crappy times, but great music" Amen!
Last year I came here because of "Bad Times At The Royal". In 2019 I come here because of "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood"... It's this song that made me think of the shocking similarities between these two movies! :O
Bad times at el royale?
Stupid Sexy Sadie - even dumber Katie - fingerprints all over - where'd you learn your crime skills from? - I am the Eggman, they are the eggmen, I AM THE WALRUS.
And reading the comments you understand , again, north americans just do what tv wants they do. Tv controls their lives. Tv tells them what to discover and when. Forget natural curiosity. Its all about what Tv orders. Sad sad generations of stupid humans.
damm, I love this song. if only that august night had turned out differently. :(
Everyone says came here from once upon time in Hollywood when it was used in bad times at el royale first
Bad boy Billy Lee entering the el royale, love it
This song gives me goosebumps --truely exceptional musicianship by all four !
Hey you! Yeah asshole I’m talking to you! What the hell do you think you’re doing bringing that noisy hunk of shit around here at midnight?! This is a private road alright?! Who are you and who are you here to see huh?!
Was theme for Underground porn hit called Lez B Friends, later rereleased as Dats Da Name o Dat Tune
Bounty Law-lunchbox.
This song was around long before once upon a time in Hollywood. Atleast more people now will know this song. Best time movie this song is used in is Bad Times at the El Royale. Quentin copies that scene completely
Bad Times At El Royale pushed me here
“You’re an alabama girl!” Billy lee
🌻 Howdy 🌻
Now I feel like throwing an opened can of dog food at a cultist hippie that just broke into my house.
Bad Times at The El Royale did it first.
Away we go...
"it's a bunch of God damn fucking hippies"
“Howdy”
Hotel El Royale 🕶️👔💣💥
Billy Lee : Howdy.......
I grew up in upstate NY in the 60's. NYC was considered a no place to go or be by the up staters. I first entered NYC in 1988 as a truck driver and visited there in 94 with my soon to be next wife. I loved it as it used to be the greatest city in the world. But like all the cities in America it was taken over by the leftist liberal commies and subsequently destroyed like all the liberal run cities in America. That is why our forefathers did not allow a popular vote in federal elections, because it would only take a handful of large liberal commie leaning cities to take over and destroy the whole nation. Long live America and Conservatism and stop killing babies you liberal murderous scumbags.
look chief, you don’t belong here, now take this mechanical asshole, and GET IT OFF MY FUCKING STREET
This is one of the best song from "The mamas and the Papas""
LSD memories..
I also have a clock that always says 12:30...what does this mean?
*Blows Smoke*
"And away we go"
*Walks down the street*
Hey, Dennis Hopper! Move this fucking piece of shit!

@ALL VIDEOS E AUDIOS DA ZUERA 11 Charlies who disliked.
we sure do
I would have plopped Mama Cass
If only the "real" ending had been like the movie - sigh :(
Butterflypoo I thought the ending would be like the actual events that took place with a little comic twist but fairy tale ending is a full 180
@Salb814 But it was nostalgic and poignant. BTW this was one of Sharon's favorite songs. Strangely, it's in the film but not on the soundtrack.
Michelle was supposed to be the hot girl. She had a lot of affairs. She's actually pretty fugly. I guess she lucked out from her sleeping around.
the hell you looking at you little ginger haired fucker?
"Hey Dennis Hopper, move this fucking piece of shit !"
“HEY YOU, YEAH ASSHOLE
IM TALKING TO YOU!"
Ainsley Harriott's Spicy Meat “THIS IS A PRIVATE ROAD!”

"HEY DENNIS HOPPER GET THE FUCK OFF MY STREET!"
THE FUCK ARE YOU LOOKING AT YOU LITTLE GINGER HAIRED FUCKER? YOU COME ROUND HERE AGAIN ILL CALL THE FUCKING COPS.

This was also played in Bad Times at the El Royale.
Fucking property taxes up the butt... Bunch of goddamn hippies! What the fuck?!
Uma Thurman's daughter played Linda Kasabian, the one who was like 'Nope, these people are fucked up!'
The one that ran away right ? ahah
davy kham In real life she was the lookout/getaway car but she didn't participate. She was the key witness that testified against them in court and got them in prison. She was the only one who left the Manson family the day after the murders.
@sammavacaist oh ok thanks for the info! I've also read that the court granted her immunity for her testimony
Jay Sebring, Sharon Tate and her baby. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood... <3
still have this album on vinyl
What the hell you looking at you little ginger-haired Fucker
Matt Dummitt Dirty fucking hippies!
Come around here again, I'm calling the fucking cops!
That shot of the Manson Family car pulling up, its headlights piercing through the night like some sort of demonic vehicle intruding into Heaven, as "young girls are coming to the canyon" plays, is just cinematic poetry. No other way to describe it.
@ronald rime I thought they used Linda's car for that night. Because Susan tells her to get a change of clothes, her driver's license and a knife.
@Joseph Hernandez That was in case Linda had to drive. I wish the real thing had ended the same way it did in the movie. That would've been great!
@ronald rime " If you listen to the words of this song, Sharon must have had some notion about what was to happen."
Give me a fucking break. Nobody knew something so horrible and incomprehensible would happen.
spot on
@RandomPlayIist It's called premonition. Sometimes people have a feeling something bad is going to happen, but they don't know what or when.
Well....believe it or not I actually got a flamethrower in my garage
From "The 14 Fists of McClusky"?!

Fucking mother fucking hippies
Well, they aren't all right, that's for goddamn sure!
BradPittiscomingtothecanyon
How did this song become the Manson Family anthem ? Not only in "Once upon a Time" but also in "Bad Times at the El Royale" it played as a background to the Manson like character played by Chris Hemsworth
It makes perfect sense because Manson himself was from another generation and another place entirely. He was an opportunist in that environment of young people "dropping out" and looking for answers and another way of living. In Tarantino's movie the lovely Mamas and Poppas song serves a dual purpose I think: it illustrates how Manson exploited hippy culture and also how the wider popular culture co-opted and exploited it and ultimately killed it.
The album was at the Tate house. By some accounts it was playing during the tragedy.
@Kevin Whelan That's the one I heard, that the Manson Family left "Twelve Thirty" playing on repeat on a record player.
There's the chorus as well. The murders occurred shortly after midnight and all three of the attackers were in their early 20s
Also Cass had a well-known party house in Laurel Canyon, itself an infamous locale. Thebsong was allegedly written about Laurel Canyon by John..
I came here because of Cass Elliot could really sing!!!!
When this song kicked in lowkey thought cliff and rick would die
I think that's the idea Tarantino was going for. Anyone who knows the history about Sharon Tate knows the moment this starts playing, trouble's coming a-knocking. Shame Tex Watson, Susan Atkins and Patricia Krenwinkel lived and Sharon Tate, her friends and the LoBiancas didn't.
Wonder why this didn't appear on the official soundtrack for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood?
Wondering this too, one of the best songs featured in the film and it was used so well. Bit of a shame.
It's normally some kind or rights issue - annoying though as this is the best track from the film!
“TAKE THIS MECHANICAL ASSHOLE, AND MOVE IT OUT OF THE FUCKING STREET!”
