Mamas And The Papas, The - Safe In My Garden Lyrics

Safe in my garden,
An ancient flower blooms.
And the scent from its nature
Slowly squares my room;
And its perfume being such
that it's causing me to swoon.
Could it be we were hot-wired
(Safe in my garden, an ancient flower blooms...)
Late one night while very tired?
They stole our minds and thought we'd never know it.
(And the scent from its nature slowly squares my room...)
With a bottle in each hand; too late to try to understand.
We don't care where it lands - we just throw it.

Somebody take us away...
Somebody take us away...

Safe in my garden,
(Could it be we were hot-wired late one night while very tired...)
An ancient flower blooms.
(They stole our minds and thought we'd never know it...)
And the scent from its nature
(With a bottle in each hand; too late to try to understand...)
Slowly squares my room.
(We don't care where it lands - we just throw it...)

(Somebody take us away...)
And it's perfume being such
That it's causing me to swoon.

When you go out in the street, (Safe in our garden...)
So many hassles with the heat;
No one there can fill your desire. (And the scent...)
Cops out with the megaphones,
Telling people stay inside their home.
Man, can't they see the world's on fire?

Somebody take us away...take us away...

Safe in our garden,
An ancient flower blooms.
And the scent from its nature...
(Cops out with the megaphones;
Tellin' people stay inside their homes.)
Man, the world's on fire.)
Slowly squares my room.

Take us away...take us away...

  26. E.... ....

This song , and Look through my window are so very underrated !

    E.... ....

    Also twelve thirty

    E.... ....

@Armand Longo Twelve Thirty isn't underrated, it was a hit and played a ton on the radio when it first came out. What's underrated is the album it came from.

    E.... ....

@RandomPlayIist it's a great song that nobody knows about

  27. E.... O....

Does this make anyone else think of homestuck? Like.... A lot???

I know and thanks @Eduardo Franco Ocnarfeara

  29. A.... T....

Michelle looks like the former lead singer of the band NIGHTWISH these photos when Michelle was young.

For the people in Orlando, Florida

  31. A.... J....

I love all of their music they were bless with it all I love them all too very very much stay gold every body love brother Andrew Jr.

  32. s.... ....

No doubt this great group had a profound impact on the psychedelic lifestyle of the carefree 60s.Nice sound and harmony.

  33. M.... V....

My take is that this is a great song about growing pot.

    M.... V....

it's about the sunset riots and protests of the early 60s

    M.... V....

I think its all of those things but "The Scent of nature" to me is that they are smoking a joint to escape the ravages of the riots and war..

    M.... V....

    I get that impression too

    M.... V....

Well I don't doubt its about escaping the establishment but its how they are escaping..LOL

    M.... V....

This song is about protesters being attacked by cops, (they way they've been doing since the 1960s) and the marijuana escape. Lsten to the lyrics. I lived through this.

  34. E.... E....

Anyone who thinks Michelle Phillips was no more than visual decoration should listen to this magnificent song and her powerful lead.

    E.... E....

@Eduardo Franco OcnarfearaMichelle and Cass complemented each others voice. Michelle sang louder to keep up with Cass. Mama Cass learned to sing softer (and better) by not belting out every note. A perfect yin and yang, musically.

    E.... E....

roguenation Denny was def more than “average looking”

    E.... E....

@Scorchy666 sure, they learned to work with each other, but they both would have been fine on their own.

    E.... E....

@una mckillen she's probably a sociopath. I guess it's a good thing she directed those traits towards her sexual behavior and eventually got them under control, though. Five months after this song was released, her marriage was failing, her career was on the line due to the band breaking up, and worst of all, manson was making frequent visits to their house

    E.... E....

They're singing about marijuana. Didn't anyone else catch this?

  35. S.... J....

I think this is their best one

  36. c.... ....

Just curious, was that Tudor home in the visual the one they lived in.  They had Jeannett McDonald's large home, Michelle and John bought it from her widower.  It was either in Belle Aire or Beverly Hills don't remember but there were pictures of it in the late 60's

    c.... ....

+califdad4 Yes that is Jeannet McDonald's home in Bel Air. They bought it from Nathalie Wood.

    c.... ....

I had read they bought it from Jeannet's  husband a year or so after she died.
Interesting Natalie Wood had it for a while

    c.... ....

+califdad4 I got the info on Michelle Phillips's book California Dreaming.

Just did a work of digital art called my magic garden and it made me think back to this song, during the turbulent years, listening to this on one of those small diner jukeboxes. They didn't play it that much on the radio then, and I never hear this nowadays so thanks so much! A true classic of the 60s, still relevant today.

    C.... T....

Carlos Torres Berríos that's an interesting thought " magic groups "

  51. P.... D....

Without a doubt one of the best harmonies in the history of music.  John Phillips despite his many problems was a lyrical genius and this is my favorite song from the sixties. If anyone lived through the violence and anguish of that era, one understands what they are singing about.  This and San Francisco also written by Phillips and sung by his best friend Scott Mc Kenzie are both some of the most haunting songs I have ever heard.

    P.... D....

    wonderful

    P.... D....

I believed this was Cass and Denny on the beginning. Anyone else think so?

    P.... D....

    @roger sargent I think so.

    P.... D....

    I think so too.

  52. S.... P....

it's a pity 'Safe in my garden' was utterly overlooked when it was released... such a powerful song... such a beautiful vocals by Cass and Michelle... what a haunting melody...

    S.... P....

poucos conseguem apreciar essa maravilha, o que essa música passa pra mim é inacreditável

    S.... P....

Danilo Arantes pra mim tb cara, é indescritível!

  53. M.... M....

Thanks for this, one of their most haunting songs. It was recorded in the attic studio in John and Michelle's house, which could only be reached through a secret passage.

    M.... M....

    You're welcome Miles.

  72. c.... ....

    you're welcome Sylvie

  73. B.... ....

Michelle is a great singer. She always was. For what a perfectionist John Phillips was, there is no way he would have had her in his groups if she couldn't deliver the goods. Very often, I find myself wishing that JP had arranged for Michelle just to sing the higher parts...Cass really has trouble hitting the notes on some of the songs.

  74. J.... H....

Michelle's strong and striking soprano is the underrated anchor to this beautiful song. Her crisp, perfect-pitch entrance at the beginning with the line "And its perfume being such that it's causing me to swoon" sets the stage for the whole magic that ensues. Her harmonic contributions throughout are essential to the whole. And her solo return at the end - in a voice that at this stage is almost spent -- encapsulates the powerful fragility of the song. Brilliant.

  75. M.... ....

Funny place to put a safe.

  76. k.... ....

Great , Those people had real talent and could really sing.
Where are the harmony groups these days?

  77. C.... H....

  80. M.... F....

ALL THESE PICS ARE SO LOVELY!!

  81. C.... ....

Wonderful! Well done! Thank you for featuring one of their most beautiful and powerful songs, from an album that even the group members underrated: THE PAPAS & THE MAMAS.

  82. T.... ....
