Malmsteen, Yngwie - Merlin's Castle Lyrics

I found a copy of this CD at my local music store about a year before Yngwie officially released his version Genesis. Marcel Jacob supposedly stole some demos from Yngwie when they were living together during the Inspiration tour. He then released this without permission and Yngwie stopped it and released it himself. He even took Marcel Jacob's bass playing off and put himself playing the bass also. This one actually sounds better than Yngwie's Genesis version, but to make sure Yngwie topped his version was adding an extra song.

when malmsteen is playing in tune with his past...he is almost the best guitar player in history. if he used more guitar techniques like paul gilbert , string skipping..more experimentation ..etc this guy would have buried jimmy hendrix.

I agree, as godly as he is he definitely stopped evolving in his 20s. People like Paul who comes from the same genre moved into other styles and became far more dynamic than Yngwie who largely plays the exact same neoclassical metal from 78-88. I still love his music but I must say watching him live and listening to his *new* stuff he clearly seems to have burnt out decades ago. Keep in mind Yngwie was far more famous and successful early on so perhaps his youthful success jaded him for later life. (It took decades for his peers to gain big audiences where as he was pushed to the front with Steeler and Alcatrazz + the first 3 or 4 solo albums which were very famous in US, Japan, and Sweden.) Gilbert for example struggled heavily with Racer X! (The only person I can think who became as famous for his playing was Vai but that was in part cause of Zappa and being the Alcatrazz replacement!) I also think Yngwie's work as a producer has gotten gradually worse as it leaves little outside input to inspire him to create in new directions.

String skipping is just maximizing efficiency of movement; the notes are the same (maybe a little different timbre for being on a different string). Besides, does Ynqwie strike you as someone who needs to work on his efficiency? :)

I wish he can re mastered  this piece with a cleaner and clearer sound to enjoy every guitar and string in it.

I think this has been remastered slightly, if you listen to this from the genesis album, the bass is a lot more pronounced, this is cleaner and has less bass making it cleaner.

I just want to hear this piece with a clear sound with the help of the new technology, I want to hear all the strings because the combination of sounds is amazing. I don't know when this album was released but I wish has a better clear sound to enjoy this song more.

+MrKennyWilliams ,thank you sir for the information, I actually listened to "the wizard" and to be honest is not the same song, it has one music line exactly the same as in the original "marlin's castle" and that is it. All the strings and guitars from original disappear in the "wizard" , the greatness of the original is that it sounds like 4 guitars being executed all at same time. Just put it with the new technology. Now if he said that is the same piece, he messed it up in there.

I agree 100% man, the best recording of Merlin's Castle exactly as it is here though is from "Birth of the Sun" from 2002

@Johnny Fox  I hear ya.  Oh yeah, I know MANY parts of this song, that went on to become parts of other songs, I just had never hear this song, or this album before.

Finally, the version where Yngwie sings! I really like his singing, it's the epitome of "Swedish demo tape" :D He should never have let anyone else sing his songs, haha.
