My family used to have a cat called Dionysus (full name Dionysus Baldr). I often thought me and my brother were so clever in naming him. I guess not really.
Although my family ended up starting to make wine, while he was still with us. So I guess it was meant to be either way. He left us recently, right before his best hooman friend died. He was the smartest, most human cat we had ever had.

Stephin Merritt celebra sus 50 años con otras tantas canciones, a imagen y semejanza del mítico "69 Love Songs" (1999). El neoyorquino es amante de estos retos, verdaderos tours de force, en esta ocasión para su cumpleaños compone algo así como una autobiografía sonora en la que cada canción se corresponde con un aniversario de su vida, al tiempo que realiza un repaso a medio siglo de cultura popular, del rock'n'roll, la electrónica, la música de cámara, cabaret´folk, pasando por el synth-pop y algún experimento que tanto le gusta realizar. No e podemos decir que es un disco conceptual. No narra una biografía al uso, más bien son relatos que nos ayudan a descubrir su personalidad, en los que en ocasiones se desliza algún hecho de su vida íntima en flashes fugaces, como cuando nos cuenta que en su niñez compartía juegos con su gato Dionysus. Al tratarse de un quintuple disco encontramos un poco de todo, un trabajo a alabar, pero también irregular en algún momento. Dos horas y media de duración dan para mucho. No lo dudes, ante todo es una fantástica colección de melodías.
