Lush - All This Useless Beauty Lyrics

It's at times such as this she'd be tempted to spit
If she wasn't so ladylike
She imagines how she might have lived back when legends and history collide
So she looks to her prince finding he's so charmingly slumped at her side
Those days are recalled on the gallery wall
And she's waiting for passion or humour to strike

What shall we do, what shall we do with all this useless beauty?

Good friday arrived, the sky darkened on time
'til he almost began to negotiate
She held his head like a baby and said 'it's okay if you cry'
Now he wants her to dress as if you couldn't guess
He desires to impress his associates
But he's part ugly beast and hellenic deceased
So she finds that the mixture is hard to deny

She won't practice the looks from the great tragic books
That were later defaced, disgraced celluloid
It don't even make sense but you can bet

If she isn't a sweetheart, a plaything or pet
The film turns her into an unveiled threat
Nonsense prevails, modesty fails
Grace and virtue turn into stupidity
While the calendar fades almost all barricades to a pale compromise
Our leaders have feasts on the backsides of beasts
They still think they're the gods of antiquity
If something you missed didn't even exist
It was just an ideal
Is that such a surprise?

Great cover! Thanks for uploading this.

Bob Dylan (book) by Greil Marcus brought me here- an article by same author from 1997 about Costello and Lush's versions of the song

    A great read.......

Really... I had no idea! :)

Holy cow! Another Lush track I've never heard! Most excellent! I think I like this version even better than Elvis Costello's.

I wish they would ve played this live back in the day . It would ve sounded killer ...

It would ve fit in perfectly in one of their sets . It has a sort of Monochrome feel / sound to it ...

A little after I left this message, I found it! It is on an Elvis Costello CD single called Distorted Angel. If you go to Amazon.co.uk, you will find copies available for £4.99. Just scroll through the Elvis Costello entries, and at the moment it's on the page showing no's 169-180 (so page 15 by my reckoning). Hope you get hold of it - it seem to be still quite easy to get. You'll probably also find it on Netsoundsmusic, MusicStack or GEMM.

OMG I just found this, and ME TOO. I thought I had everything!!!! Where is this!?!?!

  10. f.... ....

No, she's holding out her shirt. This was most likely taken around 1994.

  11. e.... ....

@Wazlor - that album is probably sung by Elvis Costello, with no Lush on it.

This Lush track appears on the two singles already mentioned - Distorted angel and You Bowed down.

  12. e.... ....

I got this on the Elvis Costello CDS "you bowed down"

Many thanks for that, Ruskin1999. I looked on Amazon, and couldn't find a copy - but I did manage to find one on e-Bay for a nominal amount, so I'm very happy to have found the origin of this track at last. I wouldn't have thought of looking amongst Elvis Costello's stuff for a Lush version of one of his songs! Odd what some artists do, isn't it! At last my collection is complete... I think...

  14. R.... ....

I can appreciate the different approach, I'm still partial to Elvis Costello's version. They did do a good job.

This is so beautiful. I've collected everything I could find (and afford!) by Lush over the years, and I believed I had the full set. But I was amazed to find this track, as it doesn't seem to have been issued on any of their albums, singles, or multi-artist compilations. So can anybody please tell me where this one comes from? Is it available anywhere on a CD? I am desperate to add this to my collection, as the last remaining piece of the puzzle - I believe...

terry platt I’d love to hear what you have collected! As I collect LUSH also! Recently collected the Origami with pizza box, met Miki, Emma, Phil and has them sign it and some other lps ♥️

@julosx have a listen to june tabors version...spine tingling

I can hardly imagine anyone, even Costello himself, being able to make this song sound better than Lush did, thanks to Emma and Miki's graceful voices. A great discover for sure. Thanx again, Fatcat.
