Lucinda Williams - Side Of The Road Lyrics
You wait in the car on the side of the road
Lemme go and stand awhile, I wanna know you're there but I wanna be alone
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna know the touch of my own skin
I walked out in a field, the grass was high, it brushed against my legs
I just stood and looked out at the open space and a farmhouse out a ways
And I wondered about the people who lived in it
And I wondered if they were happy and content
Were there children and a man and a wife?
Did she love him and take her hair down at night?
If I stray away too far from you, don't go and try to find me
It doesn't mean I don't love you, it doesn't mean I won't come back and
It only means I need a little time
To follow that unbroken line
To a place where the wild things grow
To a place where I used to always go
La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la
La la la la, la la la, la la la, la la la
If only for a minute or two
I wanna see what it feels like to be without you
I wanna know the touch of my own skin
Against the sun, against the wind

I just LOVE that song!!!
free state of jones brought me here
A tender and delicious live version used to be on YouTube. Sadly, the link now yields:
"Lucinda Williams - Sid..." This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Capital of Texas Public Telecommunications Council DBA KLRU-TV."
Richard Benish an Austin city limits episode..was just looking for it..darn!..better than this studio version
While nothing can beat the original, give Princess Chelsea's cover a try!
Chelsea's cover is SO GOOD
I heard Veruca Salt's (another great band with female vocalists and guitarists, NO not the character) rare cover of this, which I liked, so I just had to check out the original as well! This is nice! The cover doesn't seem to be on YouTube so I'll upload it myself and you can judge.
Is there an official studio recording of Veruca Salt's cover, maybe on a b-side of something? I have only a live radio session version recorded to cassette!
Link to the veruca salt cover, please?
Yes! I would love to hear this if you can upload it!
This sounds like Nina - https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=22&v=iM4IIH-I7C0
Lucy has that knack of writing songs that touch our hearts in many different ways. I am going to see here in a couple of weeks.
First Aid Kit brought me here and I like where I landed! Go see their version too

I made a Christmas comment about the Fuckemos.
Amazing taste in songs, though.
Lovely lovely song.
I've searched but can't seem to find this particular version (without strings). Anyone know which album its from ?
E Austin This version is from the Passionate Kisses EP.
E Austin I did some more research. It is now on the Lucinda Williams- Lucinda Williams re-issue. "Side of the Road (Live at KPFK)"
+E Austin hey man, a little unreleated but I found out this song and artist, by a cover of this song, I will upload the cover because it's rare and it's not on YouTube. Cheers!
I first heard this song during the time when I lost both my parents and my best friend, all in a short period of time. This song spoke to me and allowed me to express the emotions that I was keeping inside. It allowed me to feel the pain that I was going through. I was angrily in denial and this song, with Lucinda's beautiful and vulnerable vocals, let me realize that sorrow is a legitimate emotion. I wouldn't be able to move on until I was able to grieve.
@Michael Brooks Such a beautiful story about how this song helped you. I do love her voice in this...you're right 'vulnerable' is a great word for her vocals here.
makes me cry all the time ...
Me too.
love for lucinda williams--- from AFRICA
This one always gets me.
I really need a new Lucinda album. The other ones are getting worn out. ;)
So good, it's hurtful.
Incredible song. Perfect delivery and immaculate phrasing by LW.
Heard this on Desert Island Discs on radio 4 a week last Sunday and know own a version on an LP - its up there with Sandy Denny, Who knows where the time goes - Joan Baez version of Dylan's Don't think twice its alright - Nanci Griffith (transatlantic sessions) Dylan's Boots of Spanish leather and few more that are on my favorites CD - can't stop listening and trying to lean to play! RV
Three years on and still so brilliant!
rogerv3 we must be kindred... at minimum appreciate mastery when we hear it
Hi Mary -
Found a cd on Sunday 19th Nov in Ludlow England (Where the two princes were imprisoned!) with two versions of the song made in 1988, one studio and the other live - I like the live one best which is very similar to the the above.
Picture was with my wife at the stately home were Downton was filmed - she died in Oct - so much for "my happy ending" (avril lavine)
So many lovely songs - Dylan 'she belongs to me' "This moment" The Incredible String band- listen to Steve Winwood and Clapton 'Can't find my way home' at the Royal Albert hall. First heard Steve at Cotteridge art school when he was 14 and not allowed to play with his brothers band the Spencer Davis Group who were the main act.
Beautiful beautiful. Yes, please where can one find this stripped down version ???
On the Passionate Kisses EP!
i love this
Wonderful music, and, for many years, young lady & band, Miss Lucinda
Great blessings & to us all, too . ]
A.
did she love him and take her hair down at night>? did i ehar that right>? I love it. I want to do that for someone ! oh well lol
Alas!..I walk into my pasture and look back at the empty house just about everyday:(
This is beauty and love in audio form.
Beautiful. I've seen her perform this some a few times live. Amazing you are Lucinda.
Is this track available on CD?
Gorgeous version here. I still love the strings on the album version; they really bring out the emotion of the song, in my opinion. Nonetheless, this stripped-down version really showcases a beautiful voice.
Like this version. Much more stripped down than the album version.
