Lovin' Spoonful, The - Six O'clock Lyrics

There's something special about six o'clock
In the morning when it's still too early to knock.
And the dusty light shines down on the block
And reflects up and down on the hands of the clock.
Six o'clock, six o'clock.

A few hours ago she was standing here
Just watching the stars in our eyes
and the lights as uptights disappear.
And I could feel I could say what I want
That I could nudge her and call her my confidante
And now I'm back alone with just my shadow in front.
Six o'clock, six o'clock.

I went home and found that trying to sleep was a laugh
Just watching my eyelids knowing my brain bids the night not to pass.
I got up and got to scuffling around
But somehow it just wasn't the same happy town
And the bells didn't ring with the same happy sound.
Six o'clock, six o'clock.

If I go back where we parted
Could I ever be like that again?
Guess I'll just have to wait 'til tomorrow
But what can I do 'til then?

Guess I'll go back home and just wait until dawn
Guess I had to learn going back where we were wouldn't help at all.
And I wish my head had been working right
We'd have gone for coffee and talked all night.
But now I'm back alone feelin'twisted up tight.
Six o'clock, six o'clock.

Now I'm back alone...
Yes, now I'm back alone...
I'm back alone

Lovin' Spoonful, The Six O'clock Comments
  1. J.... C....

I was thinking of this tune just today. It has all the ingredients of a great song.

  2. d.... ....

Where did you get that picture from about 1:25 to 1:44? That's wild. He must've been HIGH. :-D And no idea where that might've been taken, either. Middle of nowhere.

  3. S.... C....

    Great song!!!

  4. K.... H....

one of the first records to feature the Clavinet playing.

  5. P.... B....

Brings back memories of WOR FM in the sixties. The song would start to play "There's something special at six o'clock" then singers would come in "It's Murray, Murray the K with the swinging swaraj".

  6. J.... B....

My girlfriend and I saw them three times in Chicago. The last time was at the Aerie Crown Theater in McCormack Place. John Sebastian and his girlfriend came out into the lobby while we were waiting to be let into the theater. They stood right next to us and just listened to what we were talking about. I was the only one that noticed them and I just let them alone. I told my brother about it before the show started, and he didn't believe me but I saw his girlfriend standing off stage during the show. This song and "She's Still a Mystery To Me" are my two favorite songs by the Spoonful. All their songs were great though.Their concerts were always fun.

  7. R.... J....

    love this.

  8. f.... d....

One of their best songs, still great to this day.

  9. O.... G....

At 0:40: kind of sounds like Gary Brooker. Good song. Cheers!

  10. N.... B....

I ENJOY THE MUSIC THE LOVIN SPOONFUL GROOVY

  11. t.... ....

  12. A.... E....

Seems my life has gone by about as fast as two-minute song...

  13. p.... ....

Never liked this when I was a kid. After all these years. Still don't like it.

    p.... ....

Just shit from a great band. No wonder it was their last hit!!!

  14. c.... ....

"and the DUSKY light" not Dusty, John

  15. K.... S....

This is a true "Life song" for me. So many riffs and notes that come in my head from this. A SUPER CLASSIC. With what maybe are some of the really most superb original rock sounds...done over and over and over again..but never as good.

  16. D.... D....

great song writers ! 1966 what a day for a day dream ! 8 years old then 59 now

  17. M.... G....

In addition to Jerry Yester replacing Zal Yanovsky as the group's guitarist, Joe Wissert also replaces Erik Jacobsen as the group's producer, as Jacobsen left to produce for Norman Greenbaum.

    M.... G....

is zal playing on this one?

    M.... G....

ale rocks- Zal DID play on the song.

    M.... G....

thanks for answer. so he did play on some songs on the Everything Playing album? i read that he was on two tracks on the last album wich is almost Butler with other musicians ( sorry about my english )

    M.... G....

Zal played on a track or two before he left the Spoonful in mid '67, Six O'Clock was recorded in late '66.

  18. E.... A....

This song is amazing. It reminds me of when my dad took me to the draft board to be inducted. There was a big clock in the street and as we were passing it it read 600 on the dot. When my dad left it was the first time I saw him cry!!

  19. j.... v....

that I could nudge her and call her my confidante.........great lyrics by Sebastian. and the melody is one of the best ever.

  20. N.... ....

Sounds like somethin' from pirate radio...

  21. D.... T....

This was the last Top 10 song by the Lovin' Spoonful in May of 1967, but they have one more song in November of 1967, "She's A Mystery" was the group's last 40 song, before The Lovin' Spoonful broke up in January of 1968.

  25. m.... r....

I've heard the other great songs they had but this one is new for me. Groovy!

  27. R.... R....

    brilliant song

  28. B.... K....

This is actually one of my favorite songs from the Lovin' Spoonful.

    B.... K....

    Mine too.

  29. p.... w....

Just heard this for first time ever..on "Lost 45's with Barry Scott".. surprised it was them, kinda heavy, very cool.

  30. J.... M....

A squillion years on, I STILL wake up at six o'clock. Too scared to fall asleep again. Thanks for reminding me.

  31. R.... L....

I've always loved this song.  Almost makes me feel like I'm 18 again and a senior in high school, instead of a senior citizen.

    R.... L....

    Ramsey Lee Don't we all!!

    R.... L....

Ramsey, 1966 & 1967 were so cool for music, fast cars, seeing the folks like LS up close at concerts. I'll be 70 in May and can only dream of having the vigor of a twenty year-old, but I can go out to the garage, get in one of our Mustangs, hook up the bluetooth and rip off the volume knob, and feel the same way you describe. They say you can't go home again. Maybe that's true, but you can still go out to the garaged meet your memories!

    R.... L....

    Do tell.

    R.... L....

    Isn't that the truth...

  32. 7.... ....

May,1967 on a 3 day pass to Niagra Falls.  I was 18 and drank legally for the first time.  Remember this song playing.

    7.... ....

Which side of Nigara Falls?, the American side or the Canadian side?

    7.... ....

heard this song on the Chris Noel show on armed forces radio vietnam

    7.... ....

Thank you for your service, William.

  33. H.... G....

Long time since I`ve heard these guys, and yes good song !

  34. S.... ....

    My right ear is lonely...

  35. J.... M....

Too bad there is no live footge of the Spoonful playing this gem.

  36. S.... A....

this is a real nugget from the Spoonful
    one of my favs

  37. R.... S....

This takes me way back. 1967. so obscure, yet my favorite spoonful tune. The trials and tribulations of a man in love. Could I ever identify with that!

  38. y.... ....

@ratmotor396 right about Zal- witness the appearance of LS doing "Darling Be Home Soon" on Smothers Brothers(?) with full orchestrations and everything- full production value- would have been as EPIC as Hey Jude" if not for Zal's stupid girlfriend calling his name countless times throughout sounding like a bleating sheep. it RUINED it.

  39. g.... ....

Talk about a song that paints a vivid picture! Wow. Great lyrics.

  40. P.... M....

    Great tune. Great photos!

  41. o.... ....

I've interviewed a fairly long list of celebs.
Peter Yarrow (Peter Paul & Mary) Jay Siegel (Tokens) Roger McGuinn (Byrds)
just to name a few. The hour I spent speaking with Pete Seeger has to be the highlight though.

  42. o.... ....

I host a radio show in New York State (USA) and John Sebastian and Richie Havens were on hand for Media Day at
the opening of a museum at the site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival. This was in 2008. Members of the media were invited to do brief one on one interviews with John & Richie. I had a chance to chat with both of them. By the way I believe Six O'clock was the last Spoonful single before Zal left the group.

  43. e.... z....

A minor hit here in Vancouver Canada, I dig it. It sounds so much better in stereo since i got my headphones on. Yes the loving spoonful had a few hits that went top 10, like "summer in the city" & "daydream" which topped the charts in 1966. I've got their greatest hits lp tucked away in the basement where i would have my difficulties getting to it, anyway thanks for posting!

  44. o.... ....

I wanted the band I was in in 1967 to do this song, but we broke up before we could get to work on it. I interviewed John Sebastiian at the Bethel Woods Museum(Woodstock) opening last year. Nice guy. Thanks for posting this song.

  45. B.... ....

    Rock On!

  46. T.... ....

Great song and one of my favorites by this talented band, I wish they still had John Sebastian. Thanks for sharing.

  47. B.... ....

Malcolm X once said: "If you want to be entertained by some dumb Whiteys, listen to the Four Seasons. If you like to hear smart Whiteys sing, listen to the Lovin' Spoonful."---Zagreb Dalski Trybuna, 1963

  48. P.... C....

that's great!! can i borrow that for my version?

  49. B.... ....

    Alternate lyrics:
Woke up this mornin', I wuz feelin mean
so I grabbed my ol' lady and
shoved her in the wAshin' MACHINE,
as I watched her go round and round
the cops came and took me downtown
now i'm in a jail cell wearin a frown
    at six o clock

  50. B.... ....
