Probably his greatest song. There has never been another voice like Vic Damone's. One of my favorite movies.

The song was nominated for an Oscar but lost. Deborah Kerr, a 6 time Oscar loser, and Cary Grant, who failed to win after 2 nominations weren't even nominated for this film. What was the academy thinking?

@Corno di Bassetto Vic Damone was born Vito Rocco Farinola in Brooklyn, New York, and took his mother's maiden name as his professional name. I have often marveled at how many famous singers there are of Italian heritage, quite a few changed their names to something easier to pronounce, like Vicki Carr nee Cardona, for example). Sinatra was one of the few who did not change his name, neither did Perry Como. But Bobby Darin was Cassotta and took his name out of the phonebook! But there is something special about the singing ability of Italians, it seems!

@M.J. Leger I once made a list of all Italian singers. There must be half a hundred at least (I mean famous ones, but many more otherwise). Connie Fancis, Toni Arden, Madonna of course, Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, Avalon, Annette kept her Italian name I think thanks to Disney, Bobby Vee, Fabian (his inclusion is pro forma), the towering Timi Yuro, Dean Martin (as if we didn't know), Joni James, too many to count, including Mario Lanza.



Keep in mind, Lanza was Mario's mother's SPANISH SURNAME. So even Lanza, though almost everyone thinks of him as Italian, changed his name from his father's surname. I often wonder had Mario not died so young. I would have loved to have heard his vocal versions of songs from "West Side Story" or ""The Impossible Dream" from Man of La Mancha and so many other musicals from later years after his death.



(I could cheat and check a Wiki list of Italian singers, but I did this off the top of my head and almost left out Joni James. It's more fun doing this off the top of one's head.) Oh, I left out Louis Prima, though he kept his name and was obviously Italian. Keep in mind, Damone is an Italian name too, so his stage name did not hide his ethnic heritage. Oh, there's also Lou Monte and Jerry Vale and a really fine Italian singer, great voice, Al Martino, whose biggest hit (Here in my Heart, #1) was given to him by none other than Mario Lanza who agreed to allow him to record it instead of himself. Martino, of course, co-starred in the 3 Godfather films.

@M.J. Leger Not to belabor the point but as I was typing something else Frankie Laine's name popped out! IN fact there's a show with Como, Laine and Sinatra where the audience erupts in applause as they refer to themselves as "paisanos"!

I simply adore this love story and this song!😘🎤🎼 The writers did an excellent job with this movie. I'm so glad my mother made me watch it as a teen. She had all of the classics on vhs and made us watch them even though we thought they were old saps. So glad that she did.
