Lightfoot, Gordon - I'm Not Sayin' Lyrics
I'm not sayin' that I love you
I'm not sayin' that I'll care if you love me
I'm not sayin' that I'll care
I'm not sayin' I'll be there when you want me
I can't give my heart to you
I can't lay the promise down
That I'll always be around when you need me
Now I may not be alone each time you see me
Along the street or in a small cafe
But still I won't deny or mistreat you
Baby if you let me have my way
I'm not sayin' I'll be sorry
For all the things that I might say that make you cry
The things you want me to
I'm not sayin' I'll be true but I'll try
Now I may not be alone each time you see me
Or show up when I promised that I would
But still I won't deny or mistreat you
Baby if you love me like you should
I'm not sayin' I'll be sorry
For all the things that I might say that make you cry
I can't say I'll always do
The things you want me to
I'm not sayin' I'll be true but I'll try
I can't say I'll always do
The things you want me to
I'm not sayin' I'll be true but I'll try

Lightfoot, Gordon I'm Not Sayin' Comments
Love all of Gordon Lightfoot work. Would love to hear ‘ On Susan’s Floor ‘ posted.
Wow, what a fantastic song. I was researching The Primitives I'm Not Sayin' ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YA_L6kpt1U) and I was brought here.
Weird flex but ok.
Wonderful memory!
Nico's pop version should have been a big pop hit and at the same time bring Lightfoot into the limelight. But neither a cool blond german girl nor a canadian song purist were allowed to have bigger success then.
I agree. Nico did it very well.
Nico get your ass home boy
Who the hell is Nico Gordon is the best
Prefer it at 75% speed. :)
So is a guy really a jerk if he's upfront and honest about being a jerk?
THANK YOU!!...
A great song from his best album in my opinion ----excellent versions with just the right backing ---everything - down to the cover works ------after hearing this album - when it came out - I though he might rival Dylan as a great , original folksinger and writer . Though he became more popular and more commercial ( and of course wrote a few more classics ) --- this album has the most 'integrity '
why there is a line through most of what I wrote - just ignore it - not sure how it got there .
Classic early Lightfoot. Thanks for posting.
Beautiful.
I've reached this point in my life
I like this song so-o-o much, can't tell it!
Every time I get one, I think of this song.
Tony Rice/Norman Blake version, my favorite
i knew it had to be better that the version Nico did
Noncommittal guy.
THANK YOU
This song is so appropriate at this point in my life. I come at it from his Gold album and was not aware it stood alone. It is good to still be surprised.
I'm not sayin' that I love you
I'm not sayin' that I'll care, if you love me
I'm not sayin' that I'll care
I'm not sayin' I'll be there when you want me
I can't give my heart to you
Or tell you that I'll sing your name up to the sky
I can't lay the promise down
That I'll always be around when you need me
Now I may not be alone each time you see me
Along the street or in a small cafe
But still I won't deny you or mistreat you
Baby if you let me have my way
I'm not sayin' I'll be sorry
For all the things that I might say that make you cry
I can't say I'll always do the things you want me to
I'm not sayin' I'll be true but I'll try
And now I may not be alone each time you see me
Or show up when I promised that I would
But still I won't deny you or mistreat you
Baby if you love me like you should
I'm not sayin' I'll be sorry
For all the things that I might say that make you cry
I can't say I'll always do the things you want me to
I'm not sayin' I'll be true but I'll try
I can't say I'll always do the things you want me to
I'm not sayin' I'll be true but I'll try
I prefer the original heavy metal version.
+bill smith there's not "original" metal version
+bill smith: I thought it was Ska.
Tivroc Saig I wish there was a laughing function on here! 🤣
bill smith I prefer the auto tuned trap version.
I'm not sayin that Ribbon Of Darkness isn't a good partner for this song, but this is a great song on its own.
the two together sound like the second is an apology for the first one
I heard Nico sing this in a documentary. I've had this song in my mind ever since too. I like the lyrics; the honesty.
They showed a video of Nico singing it before a Morrissey concert, of all things. Never knew she'd recorded it.
nico and Wes Anderson for Royal Tenenbaums...brought me here also...
This song popped into my head too. about 45 years ago I was a singer and guitar player in university in the folk music days of the late 60's. A group of us went to the University of Minnesota and did a show. I sang this song. They were unaware at the time of Gord and this song. I'm pretty sure I didn't do it justice, but they were blown away by the lyrics and the melody. On a sad note.... on that trip was a singer songwriter named Tom Kelly who later went on to host the CBC show Singalong Jubilee. Just found out today that Tom died in 2012.

Nico brought me here.
me too, just love the both versions
Yes Nicos version is great! 💎
A master.
Like the original. Love the Replacements cover.
Jimmi Page played guitar on this song.
you are mistaken. I have this album, David Rae played lead guitar.
Nico's cover of this is soul-filled ear candy.
Yeah! It's awesome!
Heard it today around 3 on The Current. Classic Westerberg.
Perhaps the most honest love song ever written.
now that's the truth
When I first heard this on Gord's Gold, I thought it was connected to Ribbon of Darkness. This song is so straightforward and refreshing. It, like many of GL's tunes, is timeless to me.
I think he was being ironic...
Same here!
moi aussi
Thanks so much for this. Splendid post...
There was time when Gordon disappeared from youtube... Thanks so much for uploading again. I didn't even know this wonderful song! I've always resonated so much with his music...
great song,thanks for sharing........
It is very difficult to pick just one of Gordons song that I like best. Nothing about his talent is of the usual variety
awesome song
I hear it with a smile :) and dedicate it to the ladies I love
I just adore Gordon's music. Don't know if there's a single song he sang that I didn't find the time for. Thank you for uploading this album for us ! :~)
>^,,^<
lovely song..gordon lightfoot has done so many great songs
only good memories come to mind whenever I hear Gordon Lightfoot.
This is reminiscent of "Elusive Butterfly", and quite good. Gordo wasn't ugly in later years, but he was REALLY quite good-looking when he was very young, wasn't he?
