Levon Helm - Calvary Lyrics

Every man will see the day
That his hopes are dashed away
No word can bring him peace
No man can set him free

Some will ramble far from home
Work their fingers to the bone
Some will numb their hearts with wine
To distract their troubled minds

Take me down to Calvary
Take me down, down, down, right on down

There's no running from your troubles
Or you're sure to make them double
You will meet your destiny
Every man is Calvary

Take me down to Calvary
Take me down, down, down, right on down
Take me down, take me down
Take me down, down, right on down

I will lay my hammer down
Set my knees upon the ground
I will not leave from this place
Until I see a face-to-face

Take me down to Calvary
Take me down, down, down, right on down
Take me down, take me down
Take me down, down, right on down
Take me down, take me down
Take me down, down, down, down, right on down

Good song nd let's you know that you'll keep this appointment whether you're ready or not nd you will bow down on your knees before the King of Kings and you will confess your sins to him nd you'll be judged by him as to whether you go to Heaven or otherwise!

soo sorry this man has passed on, I heard him first with the Band on Ole Dixie, never knew he was a serious recording artist in his own right! Drummers rarely get any credit or have the spotlight shone on them! WHAT A VOICE, authentic country, bluegrassed voice!

Isaacs can write new classics - capturing the humanist aspect of old spirutuals and the timeless side story-telling folk style. He also wrote "Heaven's Pearls" recorded by Helm and many others including "Going Home" and "Cottonwood" recorded by Mary Fahl, and "Gone Today" for Ollabelle..  Catch him as a bassist, guitarist, and/or vocalist for Amy Helm, The Dirt Farmer and Ramble bands, Jim Weider and the Weight, Ollabelle, Lee Feldman, his own band The Lost Leaders, and as a frequent go-to bass player for Americana performances and recordings - including Willie Nelson, Kris Kirstofferson, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, and Elvis Costello.

"A tribute to addiction" is a very superficial way to memorialize this song. It captures the human condition of suffering and some suffering is so traumatic that it can't be quantified. Levon Helm's generation, speaking broadly, weren't the type to broadcast their personal traumas for sympathy or understanding, it was something to be borne alone.

    Levon will live on forever.

I have had a face to face in my life. Yes, I was the man who faced my destiny at Calvary and was a much better human being for helping others as opposed to being a patronizing, hauty individual who was in essence a cynical narcissistic dull scientist/musician. The scientist part is meta-fiction, except for the science of politics. One needs music to avoid tedious politics and unworthy words not meaningful to the global transnationals who do care.

  34. N.... ....

AMEN TO YOU, MR. HELM,AND YOUR BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER. SHE HAS A TRULY GOLDEN VOICE. WHAT A SOULFUL SONG.THANK YOU FOR FOR THE WONDERFUL CLIP,TASEDLAK.

  35. K.... M....

Levon Helm should go down as one of the GREATEST American musicians EVER!
