Leon Russell - Jambalaya (On The Bayou) Lyrics
Goodbye Joe, me gotta' go, me oh my oh
Me gotta' go pole the pirogue down the buyou
My Yvonne, the sweetest one, me oh my oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun, on the buyou
Cause' tonight I'm gonna' see my Machez a mio
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar, and be gay- oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun, on the buyou
Thibodeaux, fontainbleau, the place is buzzin'
Kinfolk come to see yvonne by the dozen
Dress in style, go hog wild, me oh my oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou
Jumbalaya, and a crawfish pie, and a file gumbo
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar, and be gay- oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun, on the buyou
Jambalaya, a-crawfish pie and-a fillet gumbo
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my Machez a mio
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou

Leon Russell Jambalaya (On The Bayou) Comments
Even handsome as a kid ❤️
handsam dad ma was already pregnant then ame
Glen got soul. Only thing missing is 2 step and Chicago step
Leon was an awesome performer.
The Leon Russell Rock Concert at his peak was up there with the best.
Sometimes I think I was born in wrong time and wrong place...
I've never heard as melodic a version of Jambalaya as this one.
Fats was better
underrated I like him
Glen Cambell on banjo!!!!
Wonder how these guys landed a gig on Shindig? That was pretty much relegated to pop stuff. Lesley Gore etc.
No it wasn't. They had all kinds of acts, The Stones, Aretha Franklin, go look it up.
white boys being black boys
Love and Miss you, Leon.
Glenn Campbell on the banjo.
That is Glenn Cambell on the the banjo. He was part of the wrecking crew, a back up band in LA that played all the music for the beach boys(mostly pet sounds and after,) sonny and cheir the byrdes the moms and pops to name a few, they were even on a few Frank Sinatra records
This is great. Sad though that Leon's gone and Glenn can't play no more. Sad, sad. But this is a great video anyway. Leon in his Jerry Lee days.
You can see him giving the Leon Death Stare at Glenn Campbell. "Gotta watch that boy. He's gonna screw something up.":}
Haha. I actually heard someone that knew him call it just that. The Leon Death Stare.
Can't go wrong with the Wrecking Crew. Great video.
brilliant! thanks for sharing this! amazing
Link is virus ridden
and 5 years later... he looked a little different
we lost him too soon although I did have the pleasure to see him many times
the best to ever played the piano
He set the standard high for the ultimate quiet cool attitude!!
very fluid fingers on that dude!
is that glenn cambell?
Sure looks like him!
yes .. Glen was a member of the Shindogs too
Also part of the Wrecking Crew!
That's Glenn Campbell on the Banjo to Leon's left..... all the Wrecking Crew !!!
R.I.P. Leon Russell, @ 74 You still died way too young !!
Two more great ones gone, in body or spirit.
I was JUST going to ask if that was Glen Campbell! Why was Leon Russell on Shindig so young? Was he already on a label?
He was in the Shindig house band!
those amazing eyes so confident and cool
Marlene Ful...yes those eyes
If he hadn't been a musician, he could have been a hypnotist.
Yes, all he would have to do is look at you..So glad he was a musician though, love his beautiful music and love him.
He had such a great smile.
Rest in Peace you ol' Shindog.
Best version , along with Brenda Lee's
Hard to believe Leon was 22 years old here..he only looks about 14 ! and who'd have thought that those later beards were covering a gorgeous michael/kirk douglas cleft in his chin? ..and those sexy eyes, beautiful hair, soft lips...I'm off for a cold shower......
very dreamy, brooding eyes.
AWESOME sound. Thanks for sharing
glen campbell too..
Is that Glen Cambell playing the banjo?
+Timothy Lee
Yup. He and Leon were both in The Wrecking Crew.
Thanks for putting this out there, and may the Copyright Police burn in hell for yanking the previous clip.
handsome man with such talent...
Leon had a perfect voice and such talent and charisma. Later he got lost in a sea of hair and whiskers, but he was still beautiful with that silver hair and those eyes.
There used to be a 4 part video of him as a studio musician from 1964. 3 videos with this one, playing piano on an Aretha Franklin song, and him singing High Heeled Sneakers. This is all I can find-I guess they pulled the rest. How sad to know both Leon and Glen are ill. But they were so handsome!
I bought some DVD's of the Shindig series, and there is also a clip showing Leon, at the piano playing Chuck Berry's 'Roll Over Beethoven"...what's cool is that for the intro to this song, Leon plays the real Beethoven 'Moonlight Sonata'!!..........so Leon can play just about any type of music.
I loved the clip of Leon singing High Heeled Sneakers. Very sorry someone took it down. What a talent!
Are the DVD's better quality than this video? Leon took classical piano lesson from age 4 to 13/14. He was playing standards in nightclubs ( the dinner crowd ) R&R in the later hours, at the age of 14. He was just 16 when he went out with Jerry Lee Lewis on tour, He toured with Paul Revere and the Raiders when Paul had to do some military service. There is a great story Mark Lindsay tells about this, how Leon showed him how to be a showman. He also wrote She's Just My Style, arranged and did some producing on Gary Lewis and the Playboys, All this in his young 20's. Bought a home in Hollywood Hills at 22, put in a top notch recording studio the next year. If you do some research you will be surprised where it leads you. I have learned details about other musicians I love, discovered new music all from learning about him... Hopefully a book is coming out soon.
Wow, So young and handsome. Never seen this one before. Thanks.
He is handsome. I agree. I think one of the best looking men in music ever, one of the most gifted and all that ..so sad he is gone from this earth..but RIP LEON! love you!!
Famed record producer Russ Titleman and Jerry Cole on guitars
yeh it's called TALENT
That is Glen Campbell on the banjo, right?
Absolutely! Glen and Leon were members of the famed "Wrecking Crew" of first call studio musicians in LA during the 60s and early 70s.

Leon is the MAN!!!!
Such pretty eyes and voice; I've always loved Leon!
Great addition to the Leon collection.
ooooo yeah baby !!!
I just saw Leon at Belly up in Solana Beach a few months ago - Great. Glen Campbell with him on the banjo - amazing. Leon isn't getting around too quick these days - go see him if you can.
@cmannaberg Yep, that's Glen Campbell. And yep, Leon had the "glare" going on even back then.
Could that be Glen Campbell on the guitar? Leon was sure a hottie - amazing eyes.
Campbell on banjo as others mentioned. I think the guitar player is James Burton who played with the Wrecking Crew but also worked for Shindig.
Jame Burton is considered one of the greatest guitarists. He played with Elvis and Ricky Nelson and on many records. Leon learned to play guitar watching him. Such a lot of talent here.
