Lennox, Annie - Lullay Lullay (The Coventry Carol) Lyrics

Lullay, Thou tiny little Child
Bye-bye, lulle, lullay;
Lullay, Thou tiny little Child,
Bye-bye, lulle, lullay.

Oh sisters two, how may we do
To preserve this day?
This poor Youngling for whom we sing
Bye-bye, lulle, lullay.

Herod, the King, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day
His soldiers in their strength and might,
All children young to slay.

Then woe is me, poor Child, for Thee,
And ever mourn and say,
For at thy parting nor say nor sing
Bye-bye, lulle, lullay.

And when the stars ingather do,
In their far venture stay,
Then smile as dreaming, Little One,
Bye-bye, lulle, lullay.

Her version of this somber lullaby is AWFUL!!! dj

  2. M.... T....

This reminds me of Streisand singing Ave Maria on her Christmas album.
    Anything for a buck!

  3. M.... L....

    Such a sad song.

  4. e.... m....

Herod the king, in his raging
    Charged he hath this day
His men of might, in his own sight
    All children young to slay

    ... sounds familiar.

  5. t.... ....

This is terrifying...as it should be

  6. J.... O....

This is a pretty cool rendition of the song.

  7. a.... ....

    WoW! What a powerful voice!

  8. H.... ....

2 of favouritesingers have done this Alison and Annie<3

    H.... ....

Yes I love the Alison Moyet version! Wish she would release a Christmas album!

    H.... ....

Loreena McKennitt's version is spectacular as well.

Just adore this album - it is played constantly on the build up to Christmas - it evokes long winter walks through a dark wood and log fires drinking mulled wine - perfect! Also love Stings ‘If On a Winter’s Night’. Christmas classics.

Horror over trumps child prisoners at the Mexican border brought me here June 2018

  15. J.... M....

Just heard this on Banana on 4E.... Love this version......

  16. o.... ....

Annie Lennox has set the bar far too high for any interpretation of these carols to ever be as good as this! For me anyway:)

    o.... ....

This one is my favourite, although the one by Alison Moyet is quite good too ☺.

    o.... ....

Dark and inspiring, it casts a winter long shadow over the gloriously red Christmas hues.

  17. D.... B....

potent singing - angry rather than mournful though both appropriate emotions given the theme. I like Coope Boyes and Simpson's arrangement of this song most. .

  18. m.... m....

    Wonderful!!!

  19. A.... L....

    Totally haunting.

  20. j.... ....

I prefer a more gentle interpretation (Joan Baez's, for example), but this is interesting and different.

    j.... ....

jeddak Yes, I also did, until I realised its message of a mothers agony and anger that her baby is being taken from her and killed, thats why I feel this is more raw in emotion.

    j.... ....

If it were a normal lullaby, sure... keep it soft and gentle. But the anger and anguish is perfectly appropriate to having a child ripped from your arms and killed, even while the ending on a major chord speaks to hope for the future. Brilliant interpretation!

    j.... ....

@Michael Lane firatly that and secondly the ending on major was how chorals in gregorian times always enden. From minor or generally any ecclesiastical mode to a major for the end.

  21. T.... M....

    Wonderful, especially for the times.

  22. R.... ....

Next year my teacher should put this song up in the Christmas Carols night. Epic music.

  23. V.... c....

    this is just stunningly beautiful!!

  24. H.... ....

I had to sing this in church when I was 10 :L

  25. p.... ....

    BRILLIANT!!!
