Lee, Peggy - Mañana (Is Soon Enough For Me) Lyrics

The faucet she is dripping and the fence she's fallin' down
My pocket needs some money, so I can't go into town
My brother isn't working and my sister doesn't care
The car she needs a motor so I can't go anywhere

(Mañana, mañana, mañana is soon enough for me)

My mother's always working, she's working very hard
But every time she looks for me I'm sleeping in the yard
My mother thinks I'm lazy and maybe she is right
I'll go to work mañana but I gotta sleep tonight

(Mañana, mañana, mañana is soon enough for me)

Oh, once I had some money but I gave it to my friend
He said he'd pay me double, it was only for a lend
But he said a little later that the horse she was so slow
Why he give the horse my money is something I don't know

(Mañana, mañana, mañana is soon enough for me)

(Mañana, mañana, mañana is soon enough for me)

My brother took a suitcase and he went away to school
My father said he only learned to be a silly fool
My father said that I should learn to make a chile pot
But then I burned the house down, the chile was too hot

(Mañana, mañana, mañana is soon enough for me)

The window she is broken and the rain is comin' in
If someone doesn't fix it I'll be soaking to my skin
But if we wait a day or two the rain may go away
And we don't need a window on such a sunny day

(Mañana, mañana, mañana is soon enough for me)
Oba! Oba!
(Mañana, mañana, mañana is soon enough for me)
Oba! Oba!

  16. r.... y....

i am white, liberal, speak spanish but dont find this offensive. Why you ask? because its only a song back in 1948 that was popular. it doesnt say anything about Latinos in the song. people, i am politically correct sometimes but not always, this has nothing to do with that. i like hispanics. i work with quite a few. i also speak 10 to 20 languages, all self taught. carmen miranda was a great entertainer. she knew about dances and songs from her country. i doubt that she thought this song is racist.

    r.... y....

    Thank you.

Many years ago, Doug Tract (aka The Greaseman) used this music, and sang over with his own parody.

"Yo Mamma is good enough for me"; however, some took it further, and sang the lines in Spanish to make an even greater point:

Tu mamma, tu mamma, tu mamma es bestante buena para mi! (hubba hubba)
Tu mamma, tu mamma, tu mamma es lucia bien para mi!

Of course, this was sung "solemente amigos", because if the people hearing you utter such words didn't know you, or the reference, you'd find yourself on the wrong end of some very insulted people!

It's all in the context. Yes, in the 1980s, Greaseman fans were a bit sophmoric.

    J.... ....

Jitkundough yeah no kidding. I can’t un- hear the parody he did in 1984 of having Mary Lou Retton as a partner lol.

  18. d.... t....

    ...........what is your status??.........

  19. M.... ....

    Peggy Lee, you racist bitch!!!
    I love this song.

  20. j.... ....

This racism was not intrinsically pejorative in tone. The implication of the time - post-WWII relief and euphoria - was that Latin Americans are more laid back and better able to enjoy life than norteamericanos and therefore admired and envied if not emulated. However, the perceived innocence of Latin America concealed the dark Cold War struggle developing there as US corporations such as United Fruit and Standard Oil struggled to consolidate control of natural resources there and suppress movements for greater democracy and social justice by indigenous campesinos, a struggle that led to the CIA-orchestrated assassination of Arbenz-Guzman in 1954 Guatemala, the 1973 overthrow of Allende in Chile initiating Operation Condor atrocites across six states, the US-sponsored atrocities of Iran-Contra in the 1980s, and the current chaos in Honduras including the Hillary-sponsored coup against Zelaya and assassination of Berta Caceras. Americans must pull of their happy masks and face the truth of our own colonial criminality.

    j.... ....

Nobody wants to hear one more whiny, brainwashed, child, complain about the horrors of "colonialism."

    j.... ....

I agree totally and applaud your historical perspective re USA criminality in Latin America (and elsewhere). It goes back much further, including POTUS James Knox Polk's 1846-1848 warmongering in Mexico mainly to grab territory to expand slaveholding, at the expense yet again also of American Indians, et cetera. However, this song "Manana" has both a catchy tune and clever lyrics. It sadly reminds me of the decades-long denial and delay re the AGW planetary crisis by so many politicians, press, and public.

  21. k.... m....

As a Latin American I can tell you this is so funny 😂 I love laughing and dancing to this with my mum. We love laughing around so this song is perfect so white people don't get offended when the real people that you think are offended are dancing and laughing

    k.... m....

Some white people WANT to be offended, I guess it makes them feel important.

    k.... m....

It's actually an insult to Hispanics, i.e. A-M-E-R-I-C-A-N citizens of Latin American descent. It's not really about you.

  22. A.... i....

    Racista

    A.... i....

    Amb il·lusió! Nel

  23. S.... ....

    What does manana mean

    S.... ....

    It means Tomorrow

    S.... ....

    NATHAN LEHIGH tomorrow

    S.... ....

Literally it means "tomorrow" in Spanish -- but in this satiric context, to adapt a lyric from Little Orphan Annie, tomorrow is (always at least) only a day away.

    S.... ....

On a visit to Ireland, the man at the car hire place told me the story of an American tourist who asked if the Irish had a word that was equivalent to 'manana'. The answer was no, nothing is ever that urgent.

  24. v.... w....

this is amusing bc many spanish people are enjoying this song whilst white people are the ones saying it’s racist. don’t get offended for other races please ;)

  29. L.... Z....

Okay srs I cant hear anything racist from this song. From what I heard from this is that she and her brother are both clumsy lazy-asses. SOMEBODY PLZ EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THIS IS RACIST.

    L.... Z....

This is cultural appropriation. She's affecting laziness, which is an integral part of Mexicanity.

    L.... Z....

Never mind I just found out she’s white

    L.... Z....

    It's not

    L.... Z....

Paul Woods oh, Paul, aren’t you a swell guy, pointing out the problematic behavior of others.

    L.... Z....

I don't see anyone saying its racist. Actually the comments are full of the opposite

  30. U.... P....

My grandma told me that this was the big song back then like way back then

  31. Q.... K....

this isn't racist. she is probably Spanish. you can't forget that Spanish and Mexican are two different things.

here's a quick explanation for the 5 yr olds who say this is racist.
Spain is a place near France and those places. Mexicans are truly native Americans.
Spain took over the Native Americans so then the Native Americans Started speaking more and more Spanish until
every Native American spoke it. Now remember kids, Spanish people look white most of the time.

    Q.... K....

no, the Hispanic race is a result of white Spaniards and the natives mixing. if Mexicans were true natives they would be much much darker.

    Q.... K....

    Hispanic is not a race.

    Q.... K....

sorry to break ur bubble but hispanics do not look white "most of the time", There's certain hispanic races that do like honduran that their skin is fairly light . But mexicans brazilians etc . look dark and tanned most of the time with dark hair and brown eyes . It is rare for hispanics to come paled skin with blonde hair and colored eyes .

    Q.... K....

Isabella Tanner Brazilians aren’t Hispanic. Hispanic is referring to countries of Spainish origin or colonization, speaking Spanish. Brazil was colonized by Portugal and they speak Portuguese and are not Hispanic. Hispanic/Latino is not a race, but an ethnicity of a shared culture and language across many central and South American Countries. It is full of different races, including black, white, and even Asian. Most of the people in central and South America are mixed racially which is why you see a lot of brown skin. Some are mostly native, while others have a lot more European or African mixture. Btw- Peggy Lee is American.

    Q.... K....

    Queen Keke thank you

    J.... M....

Julio Mazariegos I thought it Russian music.

    J.... M....

Julio Mazariegos I thought it was Mexican

    J.... M....

NATHAN LEHIGH The only part that sounds Mexican is the Mañana chorus.

    J.... M....

Exactly my first thought. The only thing Spanish about this song is the word “Manana”. The music is definetely Brazilian, and the lyrics English. The singer is American. I love it.

  36. s.... ....

    Theme song of the IRS.

    s.... ....

    @skipapa123 Hahaaha! Well said...

    s.... ....

    lol👌🙂👌

  37. M.... H....

    M.... H....

JustAnotherAmericanPatriot C/SGT Bishop 😂😂😂 PC as in politically correct

  38. P.... ....

It's a part of history. Just like slavery and the Jim Crow laws, it's something we must appraise and understand the context it was first released in, that's all.

    P.... ....

    It's not even racist

  39. a.... ....

26 May 1920 today is Happy Birthday to Peggy Lee. My GoodReads profile has links for "today is famous for". This is a terrific song. My current motto is Mañana. She was one fine looking lady back then.

  40. C.... M....

the band behind Miss Peggy Lee was Bando da Lua (Moon's Gang) the very Brazilian combo that used to back Carmen Miranda during her career in the USA.
