LeDoux, Chris - Night Rider's Lament Lyrics

While I was out a ridin' the grave yard shift midnight till dawn
The moon was bright as a readin' light for a letter from an old friend back home
And he asked me why do you ride for your money and why do you rope for short pay
You ain't a gettin' nowhere and you're losin' your share
Boy you must have gone crazy out there

He said last night he runnin' to Jenny she's married and has a good life
And boy you sure missed the track when you never come back
She's the perfect professional's wife
And she asked him why does he ride for his money
And tell me why does he rope for short pay
He ain't a gettin' nowhere and he's losin' his share
Well he must've gone crazy out there

Ah but they've never seen the Northern Lights
They ain't never seen a hawk on the wing
They've never spent spring on the Great Divide
And they've never heard ole camp cookie sing
Well I read up the last of my letter and tore off the stamp for black Jim
And when Billy rode up to relieve me he just looked at my letter and grinned
He said you know I wonder why do they ride for their money
Tell me why do they ride for short pay
They ain't a gettin' nowhere and they're loosin' their share
Son, they all must be crazy out there
They ain't never seen the Northern Lights
They ain't never seen a hawk on the wing
They've never spent spring on the Great Divide
And they've never heard ole camp cookie sing

I was lucky enough to have the pleaser of meeting him. He was a stand up friendly guy that was nothing but kind while meeting us. Most stars would walk by without even a smile or a hello because there so full of themselves. Not Chris though, he talked with us like we was pals from way back. What a gifted person he was. So many amazing accomplishments in his life. Nothing but a pleaser to meet him, to listen to his poetry and music, to read his book, see him twice in concert and see how great he was in rodeo( wish i could have seen some of that in person but little to young for that). Very much so taken to early. But what an outstanding life he'd lived. Easy to idolize someone so great. We miss you Chris!!!

I know it's too late to change it, but Chris played this one a little too simple. Great song... deserves more effort. RIP to great talent that missed an opportunity on this one.

I disagree, Kenny. I sense a great deal of passion in his voice. This is a wonderful song and a wonderful rendition. But when it comes to the best of Chris LeDoux, nothing tops "This Cowboy's Hat."

    K.... G....

Chris sent This Cowboys Hat out to me one night in Utah after we had met and talked for awhile. We are both for Wyoming he rode with my cousins in their College days. Very humble and caring man. RIP Cowboy.

    K.... G....

After all he was a simple man.

wish I could add a photo comment I'm on night herd right now

    M.... ....

Sang this song to a herd or two in the moonlight myself, they didn't complain.

    M.... ....

something about that slow riding, moon lighting up the herd, gal on your mind and this song coming out of you that really lets you know that you are exactly where you fit.
