The lyric “take me off your mailing list for kids who think it still exists” gives me chills every time. Through my interpretation, I think he’s saying that most people in the world “subscribe” to this idea that New York is full of nothing but opportunity, but as a New Yorker as you get older you see past this. You got to see the city go through it’s changes and realize now that this “subscription” is nothing but delusion that gives people outside of New York hope, and at some point or another decide to take yourself off of this fake “mailing list”.

Listening to this song after growing up in NYC brings me to the brink of tears. The bittersweet idea of missing something that was worse for you in a way is so upsetting. Like yeah, our rich mayor and a ton of tourism helped get New York more publicity and make it safer, but in the end was it worth it? Was it worth it when wealthy businesses close down local stores I grew up with, or when countless families you grow up with have to leave due to raising real estate prices and cost in general? Yes, New York is “better” now but you can’t help missing something that you grew up with, no matter how dysfunctional it was.

I live in New York. This city has been killing me since I was born. I was born in the Bronx and I work around 42nd street. It’s not always crowded. Some people think it is but naw. Usually quiet. But it’s nice to see the tourists, it’s the only good part of the city. I grew up, and I’ve watched everything happen to people. They’ve died, they’ve divorced, they’ve been raped, they’ve been wrongfully taken. I got used to thinking that i will die anywhere, it’s not a fear anymore. I was forced to accept that my city is a disease, like a lot of others. This song makes me think of that, maybe that’s why I got to be like this. New York is a horrible place but, it has this way of grabbing you. Of making you stay here. New York, I love you but you’re bringing me down.
