Lanegan, Mark - Phantasmagoria Blues Lyrics

I have given to you jane
A torn and tattered love
But do you hear the tolling bells
That ring down from above?
Thought I'd rule like charlemagne
But I've become corrupt
Now I crawl the promenade
To fill my empty cup

And you're free
You're free again
One more time

Now if you found a razorblade
And took it to your wrist
Then I'd be here in my electric chair
Because of this
All last night and night before
I stood on the pier and cried
But I don't want to turn away
For fear of going blind

And you're free
You're free again
One more time

I have given to you Jane
A bruised and beaten love
But do you see the cold white light
That shines down from above?
Thought I'd rule like charlemagne
But I've become corrupt
Now I'll crawl the promenade
To fill my empty cup

And you're free
You're free again
One more time

This is like Tom Waits meets Leonard Cohen. This dude's voice is aging nicely.

Gonna share this song tonight. This is one of my favorite Mark Lanagan albums.

  16. Zoe Wilding

Brilliant. Heard bits of the album, and several Lanegan songs over the years and couldn't place him. The penny dropped a couple of years back. The Screaming Trees, Seattle Grunge band. Big fan of his. Particularly this album

I believe that this type of music... they call it grunge or goth or dark moody psychedelic blues... it is the most honest and raw form of the artistic expression of a mystical awareness. It's the most human expression, and you don't need to experience mystical things to understand it. We're all aware of where we're at, where we've been, and where we're ultimately headed, and I think that...as far as we can take our own minds... everyone ends up here in this kind of mood. Whether it is your basic everyday tragedy and loss, or whether it is some sort of profound existential realization of impermanence, I would not expect anyone living who is honest and who still has a soul to feel to not be existing in one prolonged Ugly Sunday while still alive on this earth. It's the curse and the cross we bear. Yet hopefully one day we'll be relieved of our burden and told why it is that we had to carry such a profound load, and maybe we'll discover that we were never alone, that someone made sure we were not crushed completely before our time.

beautiful comment. I agree with you. that's exactly what this song, this music makes me feel.

I'm glad I found this music, it's what I need right now. And your description of it cuts me to the core.

Some musicians have such a strong sense of style. Mark has the "voice and a rhythm," but the darkness of his lyrics and melody are so seductive. It's where he takes you.

  20. Glitzer Pixel

    Nice....

  21. TheCraftyness

Fantastic voice & a fantastic song

  22. cliff jumper

Maybe the best voice ever. Queens of the Stone Age should have had him on lead vocals more often.

  23. wes417

weed, isolation and Mark Lanegan = magnificent journey

    QueenConsternation

    wes417 yes xox

  24. Chris Morgan

Wow, I already love this album. Always loved Screaming Trees and Mark Lanegan's solo stuff, but he doesn't seem to be slowing down with age, like most rockers! I love this.

  25. Blammor

    Bless your hands.

  26. DeepScrambler

    Awesome

    Kevin Spencer

    Hauntingly beautiful
