Korpiklaani - Vesilahden Veräjillä Lyrics

Kasvoi kerran kaunis lapsi
Niin yleni ukon poika
Kirmu kiivas kassapäine
Vesilahen vallasmiesi
Nelivuosna nelisteli
Paimenkoiral' kulleroitti
Viisivuosna hevon päällä
Uju yli kaakilan lahden

Saapu kirmun kotomaille
Miehenalum majasille
Hunnun herra ristimiesi
Kumartaja ristin kjesun
Hunnun herra puhu paljo
Luikutteli lorujansa
Saarnojansa sepitteli
Unkasi ukon omnia

Sep'moli liikaa kirmuselle
Vesilahen valtiaalle
Suurel' sotipäällikölle
Miekkajalle mahtavalle
Kirmu viisas vallitsija
Laitto säilöihin soturit
Vangitsihe hunnun herran
Kiinni köytti kiesun koion

Kirmu näin sanoiski virkki
Hunnun herralle huhuili
"Jätä uskos llity meihim
Mikäli mielit vielä elää!"
Pelänny ei hunnun herra
Vielä viipy vaitonaisna
Kirmun puolesta rukoili
Vaikka puuhun naulittaisi

Sakaselän Naulinkaril'
Hunnun herra unohettiin
Miettinmähän tuumimahan
Kuollako vai eikö kuolla
Yöhyellä pimiällä
Kirjokannel kuutamolla
Tuli apu tovereilta
Kiesun kuvan kumartajilta

Hilja-neito kiesulainen
Oli apu hunnun herran
Lapsi kiinni lautassansa
Saapu kovalle karille
Helja-neito hiljaa hiipi
Ohi kävi vartijoitten
Vapautti hunnun herran
Kerilahen salasaunaan

Kiroeli kirmu plajo
Kunnei nähny vihulaista
Saaressansa satimessa
Sakaselän naulinkaril'
"Miksen korja kuolettanu
Tappotyötta en tohtinu
Henkeä vieny hunnun herralt
Kuristanu kalantilaista?"

Kiinni saatiin hunnun herra
Jälleen jäihe satimehen
Tällä kertaa ainaiseksi
Iäks ikikuunaiseksi
Hunnun herran käety lähti
Kourat irtos' repimällä
Torsot verta hyrskähteli

Kiristivät kourantyngät
Raual polttivat valtimot
Siihen suistu hunnun herra
Väsy vanhus vaivaamasta
Kirmun töitä kauhisteltiin
Teko pääty tarinoiksi
Noissa maissa messäsissä
Vesilahen veräjillä

[English translation]

[At The Gates Of Vesilahti]

Once grew up a beautiful child
Grew older a sun of Ukko
Kirmu, a bad-tempered, ferocious warrior
The lord of Vesilahti
At the age of four he rode a shepherd
At the age of five he crossed the Kaakila
Bay with a horse

To the lands of Kirmu
To the house of a young man
Arrived the Lord of Huntu
Man of the cross, worshiper of Jesus Christ
Lord of Huntu was a preacher
Winding through the tales of his
Twisting the ancient stories
Threatening the children of Ukko

This was enough for Kirmu
Enough for the Lord of Vesilahti
Enough for the great warlord
Enough for the greatest of the swordsman
The wise ruler Kirmu
Captured the men of God
Imprisoned the Lord of Huntu
Tied up a bastard of Christ

And so said our Kirmu
Advised the Lord of Huntu:
"Leave thy faith and join us,
If you wish to stay alive!"
The lord of Huntu did not fear,
Did not say a word
Still prayed for godless Kirmu,
Who was about to nail him onto a tree

On Naulinkari of Sakaselkä
They left the Lord of Huntu
To make up his mind
To live or die
In the darkest night
With a moonless sky
Arrived the helping hands
Those who believed in God

Maiden Hilja, one of God's own
Came to help the Lord of Huntu
With a child on her boat
She sailed to the rocks of Naulinkari
Maiden Hilja walked silently
Passed the guards of Kirmu
Set free the Lord of Huntu
Escorted him to the secret sauna of Kerilahti

Kirmu was swearing and cursing
The enemy was nowhere to be seen
No longer trapped on his island
On Naulinkari of Sakaselkä
"Why oh why didn't I Kill him,
Dare to murder man of Christ,
Take the life from the Lord of Huntu,
Strangle to death the man from Kalanti?"

The lord of Huntu could not escape
Once again he was caught
This time it was forever
Eternally indeed
Lord of Huntu lost his arms
Hands were torn away
Torso pumping out the blood
Bleeding the life away

The bleeding arms were tied up
The arteries were burned and shut
That was the end of the Lord of Huntu
Too tired and too old to continue
The deeds of Kirmu were frightening
And ended up as these tales
In the land of forests
At the Gates of Vesilahti

The events described in this song pretty much debunk the popular idea that Europe was some sort of nonviolent Utopia in which people lived in harmony with each other until the mean, nasty Christians came along and destroyed everything. This Kirmu wasn't some nature-worshipping hippie...he was more like Ivar from Vikings! The sad truth is that European history is soaked in gore, and no culture is entirely innocent, so the neo-pagans who romanticize the old ways are barking up the wrong tree!

    S.... G....

christianity is a foreign religion imported to europe from the middle east, native religions are what the people of europe have roots in, and actually part of the reason northern europe especially is growing atheistic these days is because people dont feel the connection and the calling in christianity since its an artificial religion given to us by foreign people

This song sings alot about Kirmu, wikipedia says that he was a feared warlord that did raids to Novogord (Republic that existed 1136 - 1478, these days part of Russia) and that he was a hater of Christianity, and killed / harashed Christians.

Every one read also the creation information of Old kalevala, not just the new. "New Kalevala" was builded second time in 1849, and was changed to fit that time European politician situation, and while it holds accuracy, I have understood that some things have changed. I understood that "respectable" documented religion of "respectable" non-savage country had only one god, and that thinking had affected the new Kalevala. Source: Ukon Vaaja documentary.

Old Kalevala is basically the recordings and runes that the Kalevala itself is written from in less changed form, just put in the same book. The book's name is "Kalewala taikka Wanhoja Karjalan Runoja Suomen kansan muinosista ajoista"

    M.... L....

Mikko Lappalainen big ups to you Lappalainen. I like to hear people speak true n try teaching our old ways. most of my family still bear names from the Kalevala. even my half Taiwanese son is Kalervo. Anyway, rock on brother.

    M.... L....

Kiitos, Mikko...incidentally, my husband's name was Lappalainen too.

@Traditionalist Doomer Hello again. I was simply making a comparison that non Finns might understand...it's really a shame that Finnish history is a little obscure for most people, but that's how things are!

    L.... G....

@Sarah Gray Yes, good point. Its also a shame that even some Finns themselves are truly lost of their roots. Our history is vast, yet not much information is left due to our "Dear" neighbors tendencies to erase every indication of our ancient existence.

    L.... G....

@Traditionalist Doomer I know. Native people here in Canada have something of the same problem...and what's worse is that White people often think of them as stereotypes from the movies. My upstairs neighbor is Metis, and he's a computer programmer. He does NOT live in a wigwam!

    L.... G....

Better late than never, but they founded many symbols of Odin from the Vesilahti. Every european pagan religions are pretty much same and if we learn more about KirmunKarmu its not wrong to say that he was a viking beacuse he raided many times novogord. And i apoligize my bad english.

    L.... G....

@Iiro väkivalta bilingual american finn my family left after losing their home after the winter war anyways your English is better than most Americans. Cheers!

  19. T.... D....

There are plenty of Tales and legends in Vesilahti...

    T.... D....

@***** All the stories in my land combined, less than 40% of them are family friendly. Rest of them is literally just tales how someone's guts were torn off, while the person was still alive. I love my country and heritage <3

  20. W.... ....

I'm a Swede and I'm scared of Finns. They are terrifying.

    W.... ....

I married a Finn. They really are terrifying at times...but they're good in bed.

    W.... ....

Peikkopunanenä, why would you consider a group of people that destroyed our history as friends?

    W.... ....

Voi teitä raukkaparkoja, jotka ette historiastanne tiedä. Pyhän pohjolan veriviholliset on aina ollu molemmista suunnista, idästä Tsaarin nimellä ja lännestä miekan terällä. Älkää ottako heitä lähellenne, jotka teitä on vääryydellä alistanu. Meidän kansoja on alusta alkaen alistettu molemmista ilmansuunnista, lukekaa historiaa.

    W.... ....

  23. T.... U....

I don't have any idea what they're saying but I love it.

    T.... U....

the song is about a christian priest who shows up at the pagan area of Vesilahti (the singer's homeplace), where he is caught by the warlord and forced to adopt the pagan religion, but he refuses and is imprisoned, escapes, and the warlord has him brutally killed

just throwing that out there :P

  55. T.... ....

It's not bad at all, its great.

  56. U.... ....

Um. Yeah, I didn't deny that. What I do deny is that one of those factors was Carl Marx. Why the hell do I even have to argue about what I believe? You don't know what influenced my lifestyle so stop telling me what I'm doing and what not.

I could also keep saying that you're influenced my Adolf Hitler because he talked about segregation once in a while, but that would be extremely assy and annoying of me, wouldn't it?

  57. g.... ....

your "personal opinion" has been influenced by many factors. dont be naive.

  58. U.... ....

I haven't spread any kind of propaganda and I don't even know what Marx said about ethnicity.

Everything I told you was from my point of view and also personal opinion, so would you please stop denigrating everything I said with stupid Marxism, which I, as said before, don't even agree with.

  59. g.... ....

You dont matter to me, I dont know you. I just assumed so since you said you were from Germany. Despite you denying to be cultural marxist, its ideology shines through your text. It spreads through media easily. You dont always choose what you read, but you always learn from it. In your case it has just been cultural marxistic propaganda.

  60. U.... ....

I have to disagree. I'm not German, as much as that'll hurt you. And I'm not a Marxist either, or a communist at all to that degree. I have a very well defined libertarian, political opinion which by the way is against your segregation bullsh...

  61. g.... ....

you are german. norway is germanic as well, norway has strong germanic culture. Its not like you arrived from alien culture. You will still always be german in your blood, cherish that blood, don't forget your roots. I dont agree with anything you wrote, it was just a bunch of cultural marxist nonsense to me

  62. U.... ....

No, but ethnicity is just the modern version of race-segregation and for losers.

I was born in Germany but moved to Norway, I consider myself Norwegian and people don't realise I wasn't born there (unless I talk of course) so what?

Every European country talks about how immigrants don't apply to their new culture. But that's just nationalist propaganda. How the hell would you integrate if no one even considers you Finnish just because you look a little different. Even sounds like racism to me.

  63. g.... ....

implying it works that way. finnish nationality isnt the same thing as finnish ethnicity

  64. U.... ....

You could still move to Finland, you'd be a finn then :P

  65. R.... ....

I'm proud of you, too, dude. Your country's music, especially Korpiklaani is way too awesome.

I've done my share of Kalevalan couplets, it's not rhyming, but alliterative poetry, but I'll explain in a few couplets of my own

    Kun kuulin kerran kauhun kuolemasta
    Sain silmään suuren surun suolistosta
    Heikon hengen helpotusta
    heille heivailtiin
    Raa'an raadon ruostumista
    Mustan muiston maatumista
    Mutta muistin muinaissanat
    Merkkimiesten merkkilaulut
    Vanhain vainottujen vaiut
    Luokattomien luodut loitsut
    Lepoon lestittömäin laulut
    Rupusakin sanat tuli

In Finnish orthography, that's Kenja. 1:1 orthography. Tolkien used a kind of that in his private Kenya, but y was j.

  80. J.... L....

Nah, Finnish is. Perkeleen oma kieli. According to the cultists. Tolkien liked Finnish, but never bothered to learn it. The phonology of Quenya is close to Finnish though.

    J.... L....
