Knight, Chris - North Dakota Lyrics
Been snowin' all day when I got home
The fire was out the cabin was cold
And I poured some stale coffee from the pot
The longer I waited the snow got higher
So I split some wood and built a fire
I'd seen it snow that hard before
I couldn't see the cabin from the stable door
And that mare she always rode was in the stall
The law couldn't come till the weather broke
My heart was poundin' in my throat
And I searched and called her name till it was raw
I never should have brought her here
Livin's rough this time of year
Sometimes she gazed across the plains
With a look that I couldn't name
And I'd wonder if she stay till springtime comes
I found her on the first warm day
The rain had washed the snow away
Went for wood and lost her way back home
And I ain't the kind believes in ghosts
But some nights I get pretty close
When the North Dakota winter moans
When the North Dakota winter moans

man I love your soul.
As a lifelong North Dakotan, this song is perfect on a harsh winter night, blizzard or just plain cold. It's not winter, but it's storming out there right now.
great job
Great song! Really like listening to it!
Blown away awesome thanks
Found this by pure accident. Best damn accident I've had in a long time. The mandolin adds somethin I can't quite describe. The pain in his voice makes it seem like the tellin of a true tale. Makes me wanna pull deep on a bottle of Beam. Absolutely a great song!
If she told me she'd be gone, I forgot..
I saw Chris in Newcastle in the North East of England. It was like an Alien had landed. He broke our hearts. I suppose hard cold industrial towns are all the same really. I hope I see him again. I'll be watching.
I lost my father this made me cry so hard I’m from Mandan :( ty it’s real blues

Chris Knight, James McMurtry, Justin Townes Earle, Tyler Childers all excellent singer songwriters that don't fit the global fake world of trashy music
one of my favorites...
So Good .. CK Love From Staten Island NY
Nashville is not real music. It is a formula that sucks.Musicians like Chris and Jackson Taylor's Sinners don't get the radio play but we don't care "cause we listen to themin other ways. They ain't looking to get on Kimmel's show anyways. We will keep getting the word out
How can anyone dislike this? I saw him open for Robert Earl Keen in Baltimore in 2007. The best concert I ever been too. I had not heard of Chris until then, and bow he is one of my favorite artist of all time.
I can't believe this has been out there for 9 years and I didn't see it until now it came at the right time for sure. I have followed this guy for along time. Thanks man!!!!

This is an amazing song and artist, fuck pop country
Sounds like North Dakota in the Winter.
I agree. I happened to have this song on my music list and I was driving/skating on I94 ,coming from Miles city Montana headed to Bismark. Son of a BITCH, alone the Montana-N.D. border, I can to realize how True this song is.
Sounds exactly like a cold North Dakota winter night
How big do you want to be Chris? My buddy is Luke Combs. He will need openers soon, that's how he started. You got it brother!
Lmao luke combs would be opening for this legend this guy is like 20 years past being an opening act and he probably wouldnt open for some pop country artist any way

Thank you for posting the lyrics. What a great song
muthafucking complimentary musicianship
Just saw him in Gruene Texas .....one of the best shows I've ever seen...and I've seen a bunch....deep, soulful and kicked ass! Go see him when ya can....
One of the most precise beards in mandolin
His voice reminds me of home. I'm from West Virginia. Kentucky accent is similar.
Proud to be born and raised in North Dakota and still live here. I love the land. You can feel the power odother nature in the winters. We still have people taken from us by the harsh winters.
Beautifuly harsh and such a true song!
I believe the only reason Chris isn’t a household name in country is because he refused to play the music industry game. He doesn’t seem like a guy who will compromise on anything, which is why he is who he is.
Where does he come up with these stories!?!? A master story teller and blue collar hero to all of us from this area!! I have my dad to thank for introducing me to Chris Knight and we both still love his music 13 years later!!
Hollywood & the Music Industry is full of Satanists & Pedos & this Guy probably hadn't Sold his Soul to Lucifer & the Satanic Cult of Freemasonry so he remains Unknown because clearly he has the Talent & I Love what I've heard. I Grew Up around Musicians & know the Price of Fame is not worth it ever & unfortunately the Door remains Closed to many Real Musicians & most of music today is utter Garbage so when you hear someone who is Good Enough & remains unknown you know something else is going On. But with the Internet we have the ability to Connect & Support Whomever we like & BUY DIRECT & then SHARE it with our Friends & Break the SATANIC MONOPOLY Of the Industry
Amazing
Thanks for sharing. We are looking forward to your performance at the Tradewater Music Fest, August 4, 2018!
Chris is one of the most creative writers out there. Saw him in KY. Bought all the merch I could, shook his hand. Great guy. Something I find interesting in his music is a theme of taking the dregs of society and writing songs from their perspective. Very unique. Buy this guy's stuff. He deserves your patronage.
got to meet him in person. ..hell of a nice guy
This man is an unrecognized talent---he has a great songbook. This is one incredible version of this terribly bittersweet song....
Fukenoutstanding man!
Needs a new mandarin player tho
never imagined the lead singer of disturbed could play the mandolin like that
A master songwriter. He paints a picture right before your eyes....but uses your ears to do it. He is my hero.
Stunning
It always amazes me how this quality of country/americana music goes unnoticed while the country charts are filled with the same pop country anthems that all sound alike. Nashville should be embarrassed.
You should check out the new Nashville radio station 89.5 WMOT Roots Radio for Americana, and they stream!
Chris Knight might be the best song writer I've heard, well it's chris and Jason isbell
That's lofty heights, chris what you doing next son., this is coming from a 48 year old
You know its a good song when you can see it play out like a movie in your head. You can "feel" it. Not one for crowds of people but I will go see him if he ever plays near here.

Heartbreaking and true
Comfort food for the soul. I always listen to CK when the world is spinning outta control.
He is just unreal awesome. I long to be the writer that this man is. He is the reason that I've been pounding the pen to the paper for 18 years now. I got to meet him and tell him how much he inspired me as he was the reason that I started writing. He was so humbled by it and encouraged me. That meant alot.
He is huge in my way of thinking. We've seen him all over the country and he just gets better with time. He knows what and where I come from.
Friggin amazing song and performance!
A cold peace.....
OH wat prachtig
183 people pushed the wrong button
As of December 21, 2017 I count 151 people who have no appreciation for quality songwriting and need to get the shit steam-cleaned out of their ears. I'm sorry how can you not appreciate the talent on display here.
He never mentioned fireball whiskey once in this song... How can I get my ol lady to shake her sugar shaker to this stuff!!! The real question is how have I been listing to country music the last 35 years and only heard this dude recently... Go's to show how fake the music industry has become and how programmed they have most of the publics minds.... Example... Lick em like a lollipop was a number one song and this one has never been heard outside of diehard fans of good music searching
Fantastisk nummer...super tekst...feber guitar spil...Chris Knight er en af de store..!
My favorite singer/songwriter!!
Sure hope I have the opportunity to see him live
The master of death and sad songs..he's great
This is the difference between country and western music.country has become bubble gum cow pop crap and western stayed true to tradition. I like tradition, what say you?
But Chris is a good WESTERN Kentucky boy! I do wonder if he spent some time out in the plains or the high country where such a thing like this is not an uncommon thing---you rarely get such heavy winter weather even in the mountains of Kentucky...he is a great musician. The last time I saw him---three years ago or so---it was in a place that is normally a hard rockin' "divey" kind of bar/music venue called Odd Bodies in Dayton, Ohio. Chris was solo that night and for instruments---he only had two acoustic Gibsons he switched back and forth on---maybe the one he played here was one of the same ones. Many in the place--it was packed--- seemed to be there at first only to drink, see and yack it up with friends. It was kinda damn rude that this was the case---and hard to hear him---but a core of us---got right up to the stage to listen to him. He played NONSTOP for over TWO HOURS and by the time the show had ended---it was only those who came to hear the music left in the place, with many who had first been yacking did stop and they listened intently to him. He pretty much played all of his songs--the first time I saw him a few years earlier was in "the basement" at the Taft Theater in Cincinnati. He and a full band----totally rocked it out. He had some kick ass musicians playing with him--one guy told me that they were all top draw Nashville and Austin session players. Either way you see him play a live show----sure as hell worth doing so!!!
Seen him live twice now at Majestic Theatre in Dallas. He just keeps getting better and better the older he gets. Chris really got me into writing songs with being real and clever. In my opinion, he’s the best songwriter to ever put pen to paper. We’re lucky to have real talent like this and are fortunate that Music Fog records such amazing renditions.
He is the real deal keep up the great singing and songwriting CHRIS!!!!
I think this song truly a heart felt song And sounds like it's a true story.Cant get enough of it. THANKS SR.
I think this stripped, accoustic version is better than the album version.
I agree---I tend to prefer him doing his songs purely acoustic--maybe just one or two other players backing him up like the dude playing the mandolin n the video. But then again--see him with a full electric back up band---like I did one time at the Taft Theater down in the basement ball room-----he can totally rock out and kick ass!! I do prefer this acoustic version over the studio one on the album. I also like House and 90 acres done acoustic too.
Defiantly in my opinion. I love the straight acoustic way better than the album stuff though. Just a person and and instruments, you know real music and talent...
Simply, one of the best songs i've heard. Incredible songwriter.
For real. This is legit one of the saddest yet most beautiful songs I've ever heard, and I'm well versed in sad songs.
It's a shame Chris Knights music is unknown and not mainstream, he is a great singer, songwriter, but that's not what plays nowadays, Rest In Peace country music!! All that comes out of Nashville is a bunch of half ass pop star wannabes, they should be ashamed!!!
Love these Music Fog videos of Chris Knight. Thanks.
will never understand why people like this dont make it big
true story! he seems to be a excellent story teller! thanks for keeping country alive bro! excellent musician/song writer
Génialissime ! Tellement pur et beau !
I live about a mile from Elliott county Kentucky!!! Keith Whitley was from there and Chris is from slaughters ky!! Seems like great down to earth really country is from here
Chris Knight is a hell of a song writer ! nothing on me and enough rope , rural route . shoot I could go on and on .. also I'm into the Texas / Red dirt County scene . reckless Kelly , turnpike troubadours , Josh abott, jb and the moonshine band and ect.. top shelf music
Thanks Pandora. Great song.
Got into Chris by mistake on YouTube. Best error ever.
42bexley same here! Love his style.
