Kinks, The - Suzannah's Still Alive Lyrics

Oh, Suzannah's bedraggled but she
Still wears the locket 'round her neck.
She's got a picture on the table
Of a man who is young and able.

Oh, Suzannah's gonna cry,
Oh, Suzannah's still alive.
Whiskey or gin, that's alright,
When there's nothing in her bed at night
She sleeps with the covers down,
Hopin' that somebody gets in.
Doesn't matter what she does,
She knows that she can't win.
Oh, Suzannah's gonna cry.

She's got a doll with one eye,
That always cries when she gets some sleep
She's waiting for a soldier to come home,
But she'll cry and never die.

Oh, Suzannah's gonna cry,
Oh, Suzannah's still alive.
Whiskey or gin, that's alright,
When there's nothing in her bed at night
She sleeps with the covers down,
Hopin' that somebody gets in.
Doesn't matter what she does,
She knows that she can't win.
Oh, Suzannah's still alive.

Oh, Suzannah's gonna cry,
Oh, Suzannah's still alive.
Oh, Suzannah's still alive.

Kinks, The Suzannah's Still Alive Comments
  1. h.... ....

The riffs including the intro riff sound exactly like an old dutch children' s song: "Boer daar ligt een kip in het water". I like the Kinks-song better though

    h.... ....

Some idea, not the same notes ...

She sleeps with the covers down hoping someone will get in ,this song is incredible sets the scene in the backdrop of the sexual revolution in great Britain at that time

    r.... b....

I always thought it referred to many a widow of ww2 who couldnt accept their husbands had died in the war and who were never coming home and because of that they took to drink in a forlorn effort to blur the pain and to try and escape the reality of a life of loneliness without their loved one who in their eye never aged since they left to fight.

Maybe I'm over thinking this one!

@John L john man cheers for sharing your theory on this song ,it's certainly an interesting theory I don't know but all i do know is it's a great tune and I kinda feel sorry for the old girl Susannah

Kinks Official, if you knew your stuff then you'd know this is a Dave Davies solo and not The Kinks as claimed..

    J.... G....

On technicality, it _is_ a Kinks tune, because Ray, Pete and Mick (and pianist Nicky Hopkins) played backing on it with Dave - this one was just credited to Dave alone!

    J.... G....

Jojo Gunne If its not a Kinks song, how come it was included in THE KINK KRONICLES?

  4. /.... ....

    ❤️❤️❤️

  5. S.... V....

I personally like the Kinks almost the best when they sing these raunchy songs. Killer band no doubt.

  6. D.... O....

Dave sorta kinda functioned for the Kinks like John Entwistle did for The Who: Each was a good songwriter in his own right, putting his own distinctive stamp on his material, and always a fun part of the overall mix when present. There is no point in drawing comparisons between either of them and the geniuses they played with (Pete or Ray). Suffice it to say that they were indispensable co-creators of an overall sound.

  7. h.... ....

    love it

  8. J.... C....

I absolutely love this Band!! Kinks Forever

  9. b.... d....

dave must've loved his whisky & gin

  10. R.... P....

The original single, from 1967, on the pink Pye labeL credits only Dave Davies and does not mention The Kinks.

  11. L.... M....

    I love Dave so much!

  12. J.... d....

    solo single van Dave Davies

  13. W.... o....

Man, as a 14 year old i used to thrash this tune out relentlessly on my walkman in the mid 80's. Profound!

    W.... o....

I was doing the same thing at that age, only it was the 6o's and I had one of those portable record players and a stack of 45s

  14. L.... L....

they vinyl I have is credited to Dave Davies not the Kinks hmm...

    L.... L....

Yeah. It's a little strange. Dave had four 'solo' singles released in the 1960s. The plan was for him to start a successful career as a soloist in addition to the Kinks. But only the first two records sold in Britain, so the label cancelled the plans they had for an album.
But the weird thing is, although all the songs were written and sung by Dave, they actually had the rest of the Kinks playing on the records. So even though they were released as Dave Davies solo, they still qualify as Kinks recordings. And some of the songs even appeared on Kinks albums at the time. And most of the others have either appeared on Kinks compilations or as bonus tracks on new releases of the original albums.
So yes-- It's Dave Davies solo, but it's also the Kinks

    L.... L....

I will simply add that I was aware of this. One can certainly understand the confusion generated by it however. God save the Kinks!

  15. J.... S....

such a wonderful song..... 30 thumbs down - 30 flippin' assholes

  16. j.... r....

Fantastisch nummer van in de begintijd dat ik naar Radio Veronica luisterde in 1967 of 1968?
    Roels Johan

    j.... r....

    It was released in1967.

  17. D.... ....

He may not be  as talented as his brother, nevertheless Susannah and the Death of a clown sticks in my mind more than any of the other, magnificant songs. How come?

    D.... ....

"He may not be as talented? You are either deranged or know nothing about the band.

    D.... ....

Steady on, be nice and friendly-like!

    D.... ....

Ray was writing with the maturity that McCartney/Lennon didn't hit until after Sgt Pepper, almost at the end; White Album etc... But Ray was already there in 65. I doubt there is a rock guitarist at any level that didn't learn and use Dave's stuff as the basics of what a rock and roll guitarist SHOULD be since they came out when he was 16. Even if they didn't know that was where the licks and stylistic sound came from. Dave Davies is as fundamental to R&R guitar as Chuck Berry (RIP Sir,) They are BOTH brothers are too talented for mere words, although plenty have been written about both, and will be in the future.

    D.... ....

Nowhere Man(65) and Eleanor Rigby (66) to name just 2 songs from this era ! lol

    D.... ....

@IAIN BARTLETT For one thing, his singing has a sense of urgency to it; his brother is more laid lack.

  18. W.... ....

Dave Davies never had the genius of his older brother Ray Davies, but he is nonetheless very talented as evidenced by this wonderful song. This is among my favorites by Dave Davies and among my favorites of the Kinks vast repertoire.

    W.... ....

Didn't he also write/sing "Love Me Till the Sun Shines"? The guy was certainly talented.

  19. W.... S....

    So fucking great!!!

  20. J.... N....

    Oh Susannah...
First there was Sunny Afternoon and then Susannah´s Still Alive, thanks for reminding me, this is such a good song, a real Kinks song
