Kinks, The - Funny Face Lyrics

You're walking 'round in my memory
That only gets stronger and stronger
Smudged mascara and pill-shaped eyes
Everything you want was bought with lies.

But what can I do about it
The say you won't last any longer
All the gates of love you won't walk through
The only gates you see are colored blue.

I see you peering through frosted windows
Eyes don't smile, all they do is cry
Funny Face, she's all right
Funny Face, she's all right
Funny Face, she's all right

Oh how can I live without her
The doctors won't let me see her
But I can catch a glimpse through the doorway
Of the girl that I love and care for

I see you peering through frosted windows
Eyes don't smile, all they do is cry
Funny Face, she's all right
Funny Face, she's all right
Funny Face, she's all right

    What's this song about?!?!!

    t.... ....

I believe Dave Davies wrote it about a girlfriend has was forced to stop seeing after she became pregnant.

    t.... ....

    thedeadsealion

    Mental illness

  5. A.... K....

Sounds a bit like Happy Jack of the Who

    A.... K....

Anthoniooo K. I was just thinking of that!

  6. b.... ....

Could this band be more underrated?

  7. D.... ....

    Beautiful mess!

  8. g.... ....

Hmmm....I like how The Kinks composed the bridges of this song. The quiet, oddly etheral nature of the bridges contrast with the rest of the song, and they sound like a precursor to indie pop in a way. It's easy to see where bands like Yo La Tengo & Belle and Sebastian got their sound from, after listening to this song.

    g.... ....

great observation very concise and effective description

  9. R.... S....

    One of my Kinks' fav!!
    Funny face is all right!!!

  10. M.... R....

    Fucking great Dave Davies song!

  11. M.... ....

    I love Dave's songs.
In his lyrics I feel more intimate biography.
For someone to be able to bring pain and loss across in a song like Dave is rare.

  12. D.... E....

It's a shame that Dave Davies lacked the confidence to pen more tracks. He had a different song writing style to his older brother. Not as grabbing at first, but more enduring in my opinion.

    D.... E....

I really like this song, and I agree with you, except what you write about 'more enduring'. Let's be honest here, songs such as Dedicated follower of fashion, Sunny afternoon or Autumn almanac put the Kinks into a class of their own, and nothing will ever quite match it, although bands such as the Beatles and the Faces made worthwhile stabs at it. The simplest way to explain Britain to a foreigner in 2018 is to play them a Ray Davies song.
