Kenny Rogers - Calico Silver Lyrics

No rain and the weather got warm
Broke down and I sold my farm
Headed for the silver strike
I took my wife, Calico silver gave us life

You could hear the miners sing
When they made their hammers ring
You could hear them singing out
Oh, when they found Calico silver underground

Pave the streets with silver
Let the wagons roll
Don't those mountains look just like Calico

Fifteen years down in the mines
I watched the silver shine
Listened to the big wheels churn
They were turned by Calico silver that we earned

Days were short
And the laughter was long
Nails in the pine were strong
We thought nothing could go wrong

Not counting on
Calico silver to be gone

Pave the streets with silver
Let the wagons roll
Don't those mountains look just like Calico

No ore in the richest mine
Railroad closed down the line
Nail up your windows and your doors
Close the stores, Calico Silver is no more

Got my wagon ready to go
Been a hundred years and more
Since we hitched up our team
And it seems Calico silver was a dream

I heard this album in the demo tape by Michael Martin Murphy (before he had to add the Martin to his name) before Kenny recorded it. Literally this album changed my life. Thanks to this and Alan Damron. Funny that it is surfacing in my life again.

Three Faces West did a lot of this in Red River....they were great, too

How did you come across this track? I have looked everywhere for it. I have the vinyl but it no longer works so I can't make a copy. I just want the whole album in digital format. I would pay basically anything to any vendor who had this but it's not available in any way that I can find.

The album "Ballad of Calico" brings back many memories for me.
As a freshman at the old Wright College Campus on Austin Avenue, I was very fortunate to be one of only 4 college newspaper reporters to interview Kenny Rogers and The First Edition at Mister Kelly's on Rush Street.
The band members sat around a large round table and the reporters sat after them. I was very happy to be placed next to Mary Arnold, only female in the band.
After an hour of asking questions to the band, we were invited to watch the band members play basketball in a charity event at Glenbrook South High School the next day.
No one would suspect how talented these 6 musicians were.
We each received a complimentary issue of this album for our critique.
Loved this entire band and went home happy to let family members in on the interview.

It was absolutely the best theme albums next to Sgt Pepper in my mind,  We are blessed. I wish Kenny would acknowlege more.

Thanks for posting this! My sister has the original album...we've been fans of this album since its release; being a young girl, mind you. I know all the songs and KRogers and the gang performed many of them on the songs on their Rollin' on the River TV series. Wish those were available! Kin and Terry are such great talents!

Love this album. I got mine from my brother when he was a dj in Louisiana. I then learned to appreciate this music MUCH more once I got it. What great songs!

Thank you.....one of my favorite albums of all times. Clint Eastwood should direct the movie starring Faith Hill , Tim McGraw, Dolly Parton and Jeff Bridges. Why is there no CD? Enjoyed Micheal Murphy singing almost the entire album in Dallas during the 1970's. Love it!

@Jimmyceltic91 True. Many people are not even aware how many "concept" albums are out there. Sinatra's 1950's release "In the Wee Hours," & his 60's lp "Watertown," co-produced by the 4 Seasons' Bob Gaudio with songs written by Jake Holmes come to mind. I think "Watertown" suffered from the same audience ignorance as "Calico." Maybe because the First Edition were known as a singles band no one paid attention to their lps. It's a lost treasure for sure.

@lastrada52 To be honest with you i actually used to think the same about Kenny: 'Yeah County/Folk Legend but whatevs'. But it wasn't until one rainy day when i was wikia raiding and found about the city of Calico and it's historu and that Rogers had dedicated an entire record to it that my interest grew. Ballad of Calico itself in my opinion is one of the best themed albums ever made, not only musicaly but also in making you imagine a brand new world abandoned about 40 years after it was found

@Jimmyceltic91 That's GREAT Jimmyceltic91 -- thanks a million & thanks for uploading this music to YouTube. Lots of great stuff I haven't been able to find in years is starting to become available because of generous people like you. I never had the entire Calico album (because as I said, I was never a big Kenny Rogers fan) -- but I was wrong. The rest of the LP has some wonderful songs on it & I have some catching up to do.

@lastrada52 Will try to put them together, thanks a lot for the information, i just noticed that the songs are set to play without pause beetwen them on the album.

Too bad this track isn't in it's entirety as previewed on a Warner Bros sampler LP Middle of the Road. On that LP "Calico Silver - Write Me Down (Don't Forget My Name)" were together as one long track. I am not a Kenny Rogers fan but this is a classic 1st rate track -- when together. To get the effect, bring YouTube up twice play this then segue at 2:31 into "Write Me Down" -- this will replicate the original Warner Bros sample that's so good. Kenny's vocals on the ending are incredible.
