Kansas - Hopelessly Human Lyrics

It's a strange aberration, this brainstorm of youth
Though it's lost in translation from fancy to truth
It's hopelessly human, both inside and out
A joyous occasion, no reason to doubt
It's easy somehow, what once was elusive is calling me now

I am waiting, I am patiently,
Doing nothing, in a reverie
Climbing higher, seeing everything
Interacting, slowly, spiralling
I am giving, while I'm watching the
Life I'm living, precious energy
Escalating, what was once just a game
It's never the same, no one's to blame

It's a strange situation, there's no cause for alarm
All these hot licks and rhetoric
Surely do you no harm
They're hopelessly human, both inside and out
A joyous occasion, there's no reason to doubt
When each word is read, would you know the difference
If nothing was said

All is rhythm, all is unity
I am laughing, as it's meant to be
Just amusing, I am using the
Word was given, making harmony
Moving slowly, dancing aimlessly
Endless circle, turning fearlessly
Resurrected, falling down again
Introspective, I'm just stating my views
Now you can choose, what do you feel
Is it for real this time

First seen them in 78, was 15. Last minute ticket became available so I left a note on the table for my parents, "Went to Kansas be back later". Mom freaked out until my brother explained it to her.

Loved this song for a hell of a long time!

  25. J.... D....

From the first time I put the headphones on and became lost in the Masque Album, I felt like I was hearing music by an orchestra that stood out above so many and also way ahead of the times...that was 1975, now our world needs to heed the message in All the World so badly. God Bless all of the Members of the Band that is Kansas and Thank You for 43 years of the best I have ever known

  26. B.... R....

    consciousness............. :-)

  27. B.... ....

I’ve been listening to this song since 1976 and yet every time I hear it I think “Oh my God”!

  28. B.... R....

    ........................................ :-)

  29. p.... ....

I wish I had time to read all the comments on this string. But I don't like most people my time is limited but suffice to say a lot of extremely intelligent people have visited the song. This is absolutely one of the best bands ever they don't get the recognition they deserve maybe one day they will.

    p.... ....

    The curse of knowledge...

  30. t.... B....

This album is that close to as good as Leftoverture. I don't say this lightly

  31. S.... S....

Una de las grandes canciones de Kansas.

  32. X.... ....

The second time i heard any kansas song it was on supernatural its what made me start listening to kansas more

    X.... ....

Xx_CrazyJEmery_xX Remarks I found on "Carrry On" about Supernatural is what made me start watching the show.!!!

  33. K.... M....

    It’s a strange aberration

  34. r.... ....

    F.... ....

FreedomToons I'm big fan of yours, but disagree. Kansas has so much good stuff which is better when 90% other stuff in existence. It can't be compared.

    F.... ....

    Thanks Seamus

    F.... ....

Came after missing the stream. :P

    F.... ....

    The pinnacle>hopelessly human

  40. S.... K....

Musical Genius ...Kansas transcends time it will live on forever ...I consider myself lucky i got to see them 6 times ..Incredible !!!

    S.... K....

I saw the classic lineup twice but am still so grateful for it. 1979 and 1980.

  41. B.... R....

    consciousness............................... :-)

  42. N.... P....

The first Kansas song I heard was carry on my wayward son. I thought it was ok but didn't really look that much into Kansas after that. but then I just decided to listen to a random song in a random album and found this song. and after that, I automatically feel in love with this band.

  43. b.... ....

It's funny how church organ is favored by many prog bands... Maybe they are more religious than we even guess... but the seek the answer from somewhere else but churches. Still guys of Kansas found the answer... Magical.

    b.... ....

    blueraybird just a Hammond B 3...

    b.... ....

OK The B3 can imitate many other keys, why not church organ, too...

  44. K.... P....

I had this album before some of you were even born

    K.... P....

Have been listening to Kansas since their 1st album was new !!!!  Have seen them in concert 7 times in 3 different states.   Amazing group !

    K.... P....

    I doubt it

    K.... P....

Yes, I am just 21 years old.

  45. M.... G....

this band was awesome that's all I have too say

  46. r.... ....

Can't think of a better song writer than Kerry Livgren. The depth of the lyrics and orchestration of the music (especially with the violin integration) are masterful.

    r.... ....

runskibeer the beetoven of our times

    r.... ....

I know you posted this years ago but give credit where credit is due: that would be Robbie's genius arrangements as well as quality lead vox and backup harmonies.

  47. F.... ....

The song's Human qualities are described very poetically. He is applying each attribute, one at a time, as an extension of himself, and thoroughly Human.

  48. T.... S....

    a masterpiece

    T.... S....

    Ted Schoenling

  49. A.... G....

I remember stealing my fathers albums and listening to at night and thought it was just rock until I heard Dream Theater and I said there progressive rock awesome.

  50. T.... L....

I've been listening to Kansas since 1975. I played these albums for my sons. They still love this music.

    T.... L....

Terry Long same with my dad. He grew up listening to Kansas and raised me listening to them. I'm 26 and I LOVE them.

    T.... L....

Both my parents were Radio Station DJ's when i was a kid in the 90's and i spent alot of time there, so i have my parents to thank for alot of Music that i like. Im 26 now and still listen to older stuff regularly.

    T.... L....

Looks like we have a 26 year old fan club lol

    T.... L....

@Lexort 420 You have cool parents! And good taste in music.

  51. T.... ....

    We are mammals.

  57. D.... R....

thank god we are all hopelessly human or who would be there to forgive us .

  58. f.... ....

Very 'English' prog rock sound (think Genesis or Gentle Giant) . Isn't Kansas a place somewhere in England?

    f.... ....

    +awaken77 you're such a gigantic loser.

    f.... ....

+cartrifride you have total loss of sense of humor

    f.... ....

English prog rock was a big influence on Kansas. So maybe England is somewhere in Kansas.

    f.... ....

@awaken77 It's not a joke if you imitate reality without a scent of irony or hyperbole. There are legitimately people who think Kansas is in England or something similar.

    f.... ....

Maybe there is a city called England in Kansas that we are unaware of? I doubt it but hey it’s 2017 anything is possible

  59. M.... B....

Boob Tube: All these hot licks and rhetoric surely do you no harm.
Even though that's aimed at old people not understanding the young I'm pretty sure we can agree that proper music knows no clientele, it just works.

  60. l.... s....

dimension humain hors du commun que cette composition sublissimal ,l'apogée

  61. D.... L....

  63. C.... N....

After listening to 'Carry on My Wayward Son', I just fell in love with this band. The lyrics of their songs are beautiful and relatable.

    C.... N....

    Eyyyyy
Supernatural brought you here, didn't it?

Don't lie to yourself, it was totally Supernatural.

    C.... N....

    A.... ....

@kansasisaband May the revelation of proof of truth be forever within the savior's hands.

Most Dicks are dogs...hopelessly human.....lol.....left yourself wide open for that ......

  66. R.... ....

    This song is simply magical.

  67. m.... m....

    UNICI.

  68. J.... H....

Listened to them years  ago..Great band

  69. J.... F....

being straight forward and aggressive is called rock

    J.... F....

@Joe Flip which this isnt exactly, this is complicated and aggressive also known as prog rock

    J.... F....

@Keenan Bartlome I saw Kansas on this album tour. the rocked. they didn't prog rock. they fuckin' rocked! Kansas was my first concert, the Leftoverture tour. I love these guys

    J.... F....

Thats really cool, I saw the todays lineup of kansas a month ago, it was still really good. my best concert of my life

    J.... F....

    right on!

    J.... F....

Did they do "Down The Road" ? That cut is so badass.

  70. B.... T....

    Come on Frederick,  :)
When you " dig a little deeper " they are just a bunch of great musicians in a prog rock band. Nothing more, nothing less. Expressing your inner, internet critic, 30 years later really means nothing. You're either a fan or you're not. They are no more " excessively aggressive and plain " than Genesis is just a boring and bland English band. I'm also curious, what do you call intelligence?  You may like your lyrics a little more esoteric, but I don't mind it when someone speaks directly and straight forward to me. That way I know exactly what they mean, without the manipulation, mix metaphor's and riddles. It's bad enough that so much communication between people gets lost in translation as it is. Even with all this amazing social technology... I guess we're just all Hopelessly Human.

    B.... T....

@Boob Tube but they arent even that straight forward, the lyrics are good and the instrumentals (what make them a prog rock band) are far from straight forward, some of the most complicated and intricate rock ever, and it sounds sooooo good.

  71. B.... ....

Frederick Barbarossa your taste is soooooo Euro pee on

  72. s.... ....

only word is genius, all of them in synchronization, remarkable musicians

  73. g.... ....

one of the best songs ever done

    g.... ....

    I think so, even convinced

  74. G.... K....

greatest band ever .... incredible .

  75. D.... ....

Resistance is NOT futile. Commander Data....

  76. A.... G....

I totally appreciate the fact that you can write a song about a subject and never mention the subject by name. Kerry Livgren is awesome!

  77. j.... ....

check out David Gilmour - On An Island [2006], man. full album, no skips
i grew up with kansas, many times live, needless to say one of my alltime favorites, and will be forever
i actually gotta say you will be impressed. id like to hear your after-response

  78. K.... X....

Bought this masterpiece through Columbia Record Club.

  79. e.... ....

Also too, with Kansas along with Styx and REO Speedwagon being from the Mid west, they all certainly don't have that sound of being from that part of the country. They sound more like they're from a big city either from the east or west coast.

  80. e.... ....

For this being a 1978 lp, I find it hard to believe this album was recorded in all places, Nashville. I know it's called The Music City but back then in the 70s and for a good many decades before and after that, I only thought Country was the only music recorded there.

    e.... ....

    electronmusicjunkie
    Also recorded in Louisiana.

  81. e.... ....

Compared to all of the other great R&R that was out in 1978 and the disco from the Village People, The Bee Gees, and Donna Summer which all dominated the airwaves, this Kansas lp was certainly different sounding and really good. Still haven't dug that lp out yet to listen to. Still gonna do it someday.

    e.... ....

    electronmusicjunkie
Do it Now! Enjoy and be inspired today!!!

  82. s.... ....

A testament to the sad reality that musicians today are not making music anymore. Today's music is nothing more than meaningless audio hypnosis. Kansas was one of the last bands that made real music in our generation.

    s.... ....

scottandildi this song applys to today for sure... but in 1977 not so much... Rush was still cranking great unique music and so was Scorpions, until Uli Jon Roth left... there’s other bands that I could mention but I’d guarantee that you wouldn’t know them

  83. D.... ....

I was lucky enough to see these guys in concert when the album first came out. It was absolutely awesome!!

  84. t.... ....

    0:00-7:18 melodic eargasm

  85. e.... ....

Thats how I first heard this album. On the 8 track. Now I have an unplayed vinyl copy I found at TOWER RECORDS back in 1989. Gonna dig this lp out and listen again. It's been decades I haven't heard the entire lp.

  86. T.... W....

    After led zeppelin!

  87. J.... S....

We are not hopelessly human. We are the Borg. Resistance is futile.

  88. l.... ....

Masterful Instrumentals and the Epitome of 70's progressive rock era. Kansas is truly an American Treasure!

  89. t.... ....

The six-man era of Kansas is the textbook definition of progressive rock.

  90. M.... ....

I loved Kansas in '76 and I love them today. So magestic! So inspiring! Their music reaches into your Soul! When a buddy of mine played this album while we were swimming in his pool one summer I said who the heck is THIS! Wow! That was it... Then here comes Leftoverture! hahahaha Holy Crap! OH MY!! I know some did not get it back then but I sure the heck did! Thank you Kansas! Thank you forever!

  91. l.... ....

You grew up in THE age of music!

  92. O.... F....

    Very good this song!

  93. s.... p....

Along with Genesis and The Strawbs, Kansas is one of my favorites from the '70s. That was the best era of rock music IMHO. For a band that came much later but is similar in many ways, listen to Dream Theater...

  94. B.... ....

Kerry Livgren, who wrote the song, was an avid reader of philosophy when he was in high school and college including Nietzche. When he was in high school he used to hang around with a group of kids that read and discussed philosophy. He writes about his fascination with philosophy in his book "Seeds of Change" which he is currently working on a third edition.

    Bigray in Ok

  95. N.... P....

The mere words of mortal human beings could never possibly do justice to the absolute musical genius and mastery that is KANSAS!! Best band in the galaxy; maybe in the whole universe!

  96. O.... F....

    Muito bom esse som!!

  97. M.... L....

My Brother turned me on to them I was hooked , this is three years my brother was struck down by a drunk driver I miss you Bob & thank you for all these memories I know you are at peace!!!!!!!

    M.... L....

hi my brother turned me on to them as well sorry for your loss thats horrible . peece

    M.... L....

Maya LinQuinto, I am really sorry. Your brother had great taste in music.

  98. i.... ....

3:13 is the most wonderful solo I've ever heard.
