Kansas - Everybody's My Friend Lyrics

Someone calls out my name
They ask me how I've been
So what's it like in the big time?
Will you be my friend

Have you met Mick Jagger?
Ringo, George or Paul?
Do you have my number?
Will you give me a call?

4 o'clock in the morning
I hear the telephone ring
It's the voice of a stranger saying
I like the way you sing

[Chorus]
They all want to know
Do you make a lot of money?
They all want to know
Will you change your name?
They all want to know
What's it like to be a rock star?
Everybody wants to know if they can hang around

Everybody's my friend, hello, hello
Everybody's my friend, hello, hello

Everybody wants to have a little piece of the action
Everybody wants to get into the show
Everybody falls in love with the main attraction
Everybody wants to know if they can hang around

Everybody's my friend, hello, hello
Everybody's my friend, hello, hello

Some people they that I'm changing
They say I'm not the same
But they don't understand me
There's so much more to flame

[Chorus]

Took me a while to grow fond of the Elephante era, but it has its own charms

    D.... 5....

    Elephante!!! haha!

Hate the game not the player. Kansas signed their souls to the devil and these songs weren't meant to be anything more then retaliation. John Elefante is a great singer and he had a huge respect for their former Steve Walsh. He had a very different style, but he still does it exceptionally well. He was just the messenger though, and he doesn't deserve all the hate. Mostly, this was their worst album because of outward pressures. VC is better album than AV or ML in my opinion, but it did trap them into the pop genre which they would eventually give into in Power and Drastic Measures.

    Classic great

Why would a famous person choose to give a fan their number? I know that the fan gave the number but now he has it on his the famous person's number in his phone. I would be ticked off if some random stalker called me at 4am.

I think its kind if a parody on the life that comes with the job. Thier life is no longer thier own. I don't know if you can remember back when the song came out but it wasn't normal for the world to know everything about your existence like it is now .....due to the internet. The world, distant strangers, classmates..... the people down the block... nobody knew what the heck you were doing all day long..... they had to actually run into you or call you on a real phone to find out. Fame was reserved for famous people who usually had some type of talents to get it. And fame came with a price because the world became invasive to those people. Now it's normal to have our daily World invaded by random strangers, no one's life is their own because they put it on the internet for the entire world to look at.

It isn't the sound Kansas was known for--but it held my attention way more than "Leftoverture" or "Point of No Return" did.

  8. b.... ....

i love this wonderful album i prefer this to vinyl confessions

  9. b.... s....

    everybody's my chum

  10. t.... B....

I want to jump through the screen and beat his ass for trying to sully the Kansas name

you know, John is one of those extremely rare 'high range' (with ease) vocalists, a truely gifted cat, perfect for a rock band, intelligent, handsome, comedian, and yet the 1st two albums the producer (or maybe even John possibly?) just modulates the SHIT out of his vocal trac, and its NOT needed!!

What bugs me so much about it is it washes his vocals out to where even with badass headphones (an absolute 1000% MUST for listening to music folks, and not the 'in ear' ones either, OVER the ear) it difficult to discern between his actual vocal and the fucking phasing, its so saturated with it. And he has NO troubles sustaining and reaching the challenging parts, which are in just about each track because like most high range singers, its a real joy to exercise that gift, take your talent out for a real workout, it feels awesome (maybe a little concieted?)!

    great music

kansas was a vital part of music in the 70s and 80s. scott

  15. C.... ....

Probably the only Kansas song to name-check other musicians of our time, which here includes members of two great 1960s British rock bands: Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones) and the three then living Beatles (Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr; Harrison died in 2001).

  16. 1.... ....

This sounds like it has a few Toto licks in it. Loved this album.
John is still quite busy with collab stuff.

  17. M.... S....

nice nice nice thanks for sharing. have not had listened to them in some 20 years or so.

I Love This Great Song By Kansas.

  21. K.... P....

    great song!!!

  22. S.... D....

2nd phase Kansas. Not Steve Walsh. Not that's there anything wrong with that. They kind of "lost their way" in the mid-80's - and again, nothing wrong with that! John Elefante provided adequate vocals during these Kerry Livgren driven years. Then, sanity won.

    S.... D....

Perfect assessment. Elefante was ADEQUATE. No comparison to Steve Walsh.

    S.... D....

Sorry, but I prefer Elefante's vocals!

  23. D.... D....

holy shit, how the mighty had fallen for a while there in the early -80's. "Journey" wannabe's? Sure, this sure ain't bad.and DEFINETLY not kansas. "-Hello, Hello"?
    gimme a break...

  24. J.... Y....

Way ahead of their time, and classic at the same time.

  25. i.... ....

Journey knowkoff? You don't know music i see.. two different types of music.. guitar players and vocals are completely different..

    i.... ....

Right, but not quite. This is more Journey territory than mid-70s Kansas, which in a way pinpoints the direction JE was heading with the band. Listen to Journey's "Frontiers" from the same year, and compare the guitar work and guitar riffs... It would have been interesting to follow up where this would be heading, but history said otherwise (with "Power" and "In the Spirit of Things"). All the best.

  26. b.... ....

Awesome song! Every once in a while, when I least expect it, this song comes in my mind. LOVE IT!! Thanks for posting!

  27. C.... S....

He had a Walsh type sound to his voice. He could sing the Kansas staples live and not completely alienate the fans...IMHO

    C.... S....

Bullshit! Dude doesn't sound anything like Steve Walsh. In fact, Elefante was not even in the same ballpark as Walsh.

    C.... S....

    Yeah, Elefante was better!

  28. i.... ....

Facebook should buy the rights to this song

  29. M.... ....

I know, he's done a lot. I didn't mean to belittle him, I just meant that I enjoyed listening to him just as much as Walsh.

  30. D.... D....

John Elefante..he's not the suitable replacement of anybody!!..is a fantastic singer and perfect and educated multi-instrumentist and awesome songwriter and precious producer and what else!!!...

  31. j.... ....

they sound like a clone of Steve Perry era Journey this hope the whole album is not just a Escape knock off

  32. M.... ....

@dudsbalboa I agree, he was a suitable replacement until Walsh returned.

  33. J.... G....

I remember playing in a cover band in the 80s doing this tune & it always killed! YEAH!

  34. d.... ....

Great song. Haven't heard it in so long. John Elefante was one hell of a talented singer.

    d.... ....

"One hell of a talented singer?" Compared to whom??
