Kansas - Andi Lyrics

Andi won't dance
Andi won't sing
Andi won't play
She sits in her room, hiding away, hiding away

She hasn't a friend
They think she's a boy, they leave her alone
But what they don't know
Andi has dreams, all of her own

Yea, she wants to be a lady
Can anyone see?
That's she's trapped inside a little boy's body
She's waiting
For the dream of her life
To be a lady
That's all she wants to be

[Chorus]
Andi you're not just anyone
Don't be ashamed
Open the door, don't hide away
Your dreams will awaken

Andi you're not just anyone
Don't take the blame
Though you're scared and all alone
You'll be there someday
Oh Andi, you're old enough to know
Don't ask me why
The leaves they fall down from the trees
But in the spring, they come again
Yes, they come again
Oh Andi, don't be afraid
Oh Andi

Andi can you hear me?
Will you come out on your own?

Oh the voice in the distance
Saying don't be afraid, Andi
I will make you somebody
I will make you a lady
The dream of your life
A lady, is what you will be

[Chorus]

Kansas Andi Comments
  1. J.... K....

I didn't care for this song when I first heard it but it's kind of grown on me.

  2. B.... C....

I think this is the best cut of the album the music goes excellent with the harmonies but by far the whole album is tremendous

  3. J.... B....

All I can say is if you don't know for a fact what this song is about, then keep your opinion to yourself or risk embarrassing yourself. Remember, its best to remain silent and thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.

  4. S.... Z....

This song has NOTHING to do with transgender! Look at the lyrics ( she ) not ( he ). Man it's only takes common sense to know what they're talking about, and it's about the lead singers' niece. Idiots comments below*

  5. N.... M....

Elefante is definitely queer AF. Glad they kicked him out. This is a child tranny song "She's trapped in a little boys body..", and Fight fire with fire with all his talk of "flaming desire" is gay.

    N.... M....

    Lol your a fucking idiot

  6. J.... R....

Around the time of this release, Andrea at a music store (forgot the name) had me listen to this. Great song. I think she could relate to it. She was cute. Always liked her. Should have asked her out.

A Beautiful and pretty song from Kansas." Andi" is an upbeat version of "Lonely Wind", a favorite of mine from their debut album, "KANSAS". Andi has some nice guitar sounds, upbeat electronic drums, and some High Kansas Harmonies so wonderful and so calm. Thanks and Cheers!!!

  11. a.... m....

every band has albums they hate or don't sell. It's part of the art. Many artists say if they fail at a album that makes them work harder.

    a.... m....

...or they just breakup right after.

  12. J.... ....

How ironic that so many people think this is about a transgirl - it seems unlikely given the brutal fundamentalism of the singer! (be nice if it was though, to have some grace and accept that Jesus loves all people, and not just a few chosen ones....

Love this song, Raquel R. ~!

  15. R.... P....

Ok here's why Ronnie Platt was an immensely better choice than John Elefante as a replacement for Steve Walsh: With Ronnie they still sound like KANSAS and aren't putting out embarrassing material like this (and don't get me started on that album cover, were they trying to drive fans away?) While John has earned my respect with his post-Kansas material, Drastic Measures, and to some extent Vinyl Confessions, was "just a travesty."

    R.... P....

Just... no. That album was one of the treasures of the 80s. Every song is good.

  16. R.... B....

    Kansas... laid back...

Correct! Thanks for sharing. Even folks trapped in closed minds may one day be able to open their hearts and minds to truly love and accept others.

  18. f.... ....

randy jones...................    i  so   accept  all u say

  19. f.... ....

i wonder...  is   this   a    happypack   for  some teansgenders

    f.... ....

    @M
Nope. More like filled with hatred, prejudice, and bigotry.

    f.... ....

    @M
Yeah, tell that to someone stupid enough to believe it.

  20. O.... ....

I'm listening to "Andi" right now, and it is a FANTASTIC song. David Pack from Ambrosia sings back up on it, and it is a VERY emotional topic, which is still a NOW topic, trans gender folk who are not afraid to make the change to what they truly are. This is actually one of my FAVORITE Kansas albums...

    O.... ....

It's not a transgender song !!!!! it's about a little girl who longs to be an adult woman with curves and feminine looks eic. and not her tomboy like figure and features.
The narrator of the song is telling her that she can't rush it and that in time , she will naturally turn into what she dreams of becoming.

  21. f.... ....

why   is   this   song   so   special

  22. R.... J....

Kansas only made one bad album and this is it . What a load of crap . I've tried to give it a chance , but the more I hear it the more I realize I'm right . There's not a single moment on the entire album where I can say I like that part . Somewhere to elsewhere is my second least favorite , but at least I can find some moments in it that moves me .

    R.... J....

+Randy Jones Randy....... my dear   friend..... i   dont   want  to  be   bad  or   sameting   like that
i  love  kansas  as   u   you ....   its  funny  when ehen  u   a  attept   a  sand   ffron  the   80.s....  manu  more  react  then     u  are   reacting   to    a   chit   foundatind   from  the   90-2000 or   so

    R.... J....

@frasseh I don't like the material , I can't be any more direct than that . Just my opinion

    R.... J....

+Randy Jones From what I've heard not even John Elefante likes this album even though the Elefante bros. wrote most of the songs on it.

    R.... J....

+John King Kansas is one of my favorite bands of all time but Drastic Measures is a bad album lol . I honestly tried to like it but I can't . Phil Eharts worst drumming of his career lol . It just doesn't move me like the rest of Kansas material . Somewhere to elsewhere is my next least favorite and it's leaps and bounds better to me tha Drastic Measures .

    R.... J....

Randy Jones You're an effing idiot. Go away.

  23. T.... G....

    Their best song.

    T.... G....

Fuck you. Sorry but you deserve it.

    T.... G....

    Totalmente de acuerdo.
    Una cancion maravillosa

    T.... G....

yeah fuck you! it's death of mother nature suite you sack of shit

  24. S.... M....

I really got to say, for a prog rock band originating from the state of Kansas going through an AOR/ christian rock period with a lead singer who is a devout believer, to write a song about a transgender woman in a positive light in 1984 is pretty fucking neat. :)

    S.... M....

This is not what the song means.

    S.... M....

It's not about a transgender boy !! It's about a little girl who longs to have an adult womans body and not her boyish body and looks. The narrator of the song is telling her that in time it will happen and that she cannot rush it.

    S.... M....

Ha Ha Ha. Nope! It would be cool, be no. no one in Kansas was that forward thinking.

    S.... M....

Wow are that stupid? It's not about a transgender freak

  25. D.... H....

Isn't it obvious to everyone that "they think she's a boy; they leave her alone" is a reference to the expectations put upon young ladies by girls their own age? Andi wants to get past puberty and be accepted in society. This is a wonderful song that should have been a smash hit.

    D.... H....

Ghost from the spirit of things should have been a smash hit , And I is possibly the worst song kansas ever did . IMO

  26. M.... P....

I was one of the very first people to ever hear this song on a CD !! Many many years ago.

  27. M.... P....

Find my daughter: Amy Jem Star Paradis !!

  28. d.... ....

So this song was intended to be about a cis girl upset at not getting to go through female puberty with all the other girls, but some listeners interpreted it to be about a trans girl upset at not getting to go through female puberty with all the other girls.

I'm not seeing the big difference here.

"Andi won't dance, Andi won't sing, Andi won't play...she sits in her room hiding away...hiding away......but what they don't know, Andi has dreams all of her own.."

  33. L.... H....

The beauty of music is that you can intrepret it any way you want. Just enjoy the music. If it sets you free in the process, then go with it. You don't have to tell other people how to enjoy something.

  34. C.... ....

Love this with John Elefante ! Thank you!

  35. t.... ....

It depends on the artist. Some artists, such as Betty Thatcher (Renaissance's lyricist) or Bernie Taupin, like the alternative interpretations fans have of their lyrics.

  36. M.... ....

Sure, songs can most definitely be open for alternative interpretations...until you discover from the writer/singer this is a flawed and inaccurate interpretation. Then, you must honestly acknowledge the true interpretation of the song. Is this fair or not?

  37. M.... ....

Ok...Now, I know you are kidding me. :-D That is a good one.

  38. M.... ....

    THANK YOU!

  39. M.... ....

No, no, no...It is not about trans girls. It is about the hardships of an adolescent girl as TBWCraigThomas wrote below.

  40. M.... ....

No buddette. :-D That lyric has nothing to do with transgenderism. Do you even know the name of the singer of this song and his background? You may want to research John Elefante.

If this was about transgenderism, I would certainly write, "It is about transgenderism." But, it is most certainly not.

  41. t.... ....

I don't do chemicals, except for NutraSweet and caffeine. In any case, songs can be open for alternative interpretations, don't you think?

  43. f.... ....

i was about 15 when this song suddenly occured at kansas, drastic measure. it was a great opening for me... and i am only gay... i loved it and i still do.

    f.... ....

M, indeed, it’s about the diamonds in the rough. The late bloomers who will one day woo the hearts of many.

  44. d.... ....

    "She hasn't a friend,they think she's a boy, they leave her alone"
"Yea, she wants to be a lady, can anyone just see?
    That's she's trapped inside a little boy's body"

Yeah, definitely about trans girls. Love it!

    d.... ....

    No it isn't !!!!!!

  45. a.... n....

@MrJDCUSA "She hasn't a friend, they think she's a boy, they leave her alone" no buddy that lyric has to do with transgenderism :)

    a.... n....

Not according to John Elefante it doesn't. And John wrote the song, so HE of all people ought to know. It's about an adolescent girl who wants to grow up and be a woman. I asked John about it at an aftershow at one of his concerts and that was his explanation. Seeing that HE wrote it, I tend to believe him.

    a.... n....

@cbunga saying the song is about a girl wanting to grow up and be a woman is hardly contradictory. and regardless of what John intended the lyrics to mean he did write "trapped in a little boy's body"

  46. M.... ....

@trfesok It is about a little girl who dreams of growing up and becoming a lady. Nice try. You must have had another one of your chemically induced hallucinations.

  47. K.... ....

Ahh, memories! I recall borrowing this record from the library when I was 10 and listening to it in my bedroom over and over... At the time, "Andi" was may favorite song on the album.

    Thanks for posting!

  48. t.... ....

A song about gender displacment? In 1983? From KANSAS??! Pretty daring for that time

    t.... ....

    No it isn't !!!
