Really lacks the energy of my favorite JF music, and if someone were to play it for me I probably wouldn't even recognize it as JF. I don't care for it at all. Which just makes me sad.

I missed out on seeing The Joy Formidable perform 2 years ago in NY due to a last minute business meeting. It has now become one of my life missions to make up for it and catch them in concert, because it’s pretty obvious that their sound would be incredibly explosive in a live setting. I like the more drum-forward sound on this track - Matt is a beast, one day we will get a solo out of him! The bass track also stands out pretty clearly. I think there is a less noise wash like The Big Roar, and less studio production gloss like Wolf's Law.

But when Ritzy cuts loose in the end ... some Hendrix stuff right there. Outstanding, I can't wait to fall in love with the rest of the album!

Great stuff quite different than TJF: Lord Huron, St Lucia, Kishi Bashi, Sigur Ros, Lights and Motion, Jennie Vee, Carbon Leaf, The Mowgli's, The Moth and The Flame, Walk the Moon, CHVRCHES, X Ambassadors, Andrew McMahon and The Wilderness (also Jack's Mannequin before he went solo).

If you like the rock/shoegaze sound, there are shoegaze groups on FB that are excellent to source new, lesser known bands.

+Valane the big roar was a much heavier album

+Matt Dupuis I think the guitars are mixed lower on here. They're more prominent on the big roar and definitely songs like the maw maw song

+Sam Crisler even so songs like whirring are much heavier riffs are faster etc much more post punk grunge than this. really just depends what you consider heavy I suppose. these guitars sound like they are maybe tuned lower but that doesn't necessarily make something heavier to me. the overall composition seems slower and more melodic. I'm not saying it's any better or worse. just in my opinion there old stuff sounded more like mid 90's post punk than their newer stuff
